[PHP] PHP Hosting - Coupon
As some of you are aware, my hosting company, PilotPig, has been struggling a lot with phishers and fraud. Stolen PayPal accounts used to pay for hosting accounts on my servers. As a result - and in celebration of the only holiday that I actually give a damn about - I'm doing a 50% off coupon for monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual subscriptions on 10GB/75GB Developer accounts and 50GB/150GB reseller accounts. I'm finally fed up. Since this time last year, it's cost me literally thousands. After today, I'm pulling the plug on public sales and will only set up new accounts manually until I'm ready to deal with the BS of these jackasses again. I'm by no means cutting out the hosting service - there's no worry about that. I'm only ceasing automated public sales. Basically, the two reasons I'm doing this are (1) because it's Saint Paddy's Day - Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit! And (2) because I'd like to get at least a single-digit positive number for reporting for Q1 2008 for my accounting. So far, my losses for 2008 look like I stuck a mirror up to someone's paycheck. I just had two homeless gentlemen laugh and point at me and tell me my family is poor. Anyway, it's 50% off, comes with SSH/unlimited databases/blah/blah/blah. Ask for references here on the list and I don't think it'll be a problem to get some honest feedback from our peers here. Forgive me if this is a bit off topic but I currenly have several sites hosted with dreamhost, it's cheap and well prone to be slow. Does anyone have experience with mediatemple? I would just be running php/mysql sites. Thanks!

Buying the hosting itself is sometimes a little bit slow, but it's worth. I recently migrated their old MT server to the new setup that uses CentOS 4.4, PHP 4.3.9, and MySQL 4.1.20. It's nice because it's a completely isolated Virtual Server with root access to configure things as you please. Since they use the free CentOS it's easy to compile stuff in a VMWare clone and migrate the binaries over. General admin goes through Plesk which is pretty much idiot proof. Dreamhost mostly left me alone to do my job, except for the stupid/funny newsletter. There is probably down-time, but I hacked a fail-safe roll-over to another server elsewhere, so I don't even notice it being down. ServerPronto/Infolink have also been listed for spam on several occasions. Being a former customer, I don't recommend them at all. It works great for me, and you can host all the domains you want. Maybe look for reseller acccounts and become your own reseller for all the sub-accounts. Or find somebody who gives enough HD space for your biggest accounts that you don't care about sharing. Host-Gator has a fantastic, cheap reseller program, although you aren't sharing space within 1 account. My real recommendation would be ServerPronto though. $29.95/mo for a dedicated with 40gig space. It works great for me, and you can host all the domains you want. I use Pair Networks (www.pair.com) and they allow this easily. You control which directories your domains point to (or you can stack one domain on-top of another to save money if they aren't being used). Custom DNS is supported if you need it, disabled if not. You can run your own scripts via cron and they've got PHP 4 natively and PHP 5 available as a CGI. I've got numerous very high traffic sites hosted with them, and have never had an issue in the 10+ years I've been a customer (that's a long time fullstop, let alone to be with a single hosting company). I've had good experiences with www.phpwebhosting.com for smaller sites (virtual hosting). I haven't had any super-high traffic sites hosted on them though. File permissions. Each user has their own username, but all are a member of the group hosting They can CHMOD their files to whatever they like, so security is really up to them. They've been mentioned on the list before, but I had a great experience with Cedant.com. Apache, PHP4, MySQL, and shell access via SSH (and the ability to compile your own software in a /home/youraccount/bin directory). I hosted a site with them for a few months earlier this year before taking the plunge and hosting on a dedicated Linux box at home, and found their support staff to be knowledgeable and responsive. Simply build your own swf.so PHP extension by doing: ./configure --with-swf=shared make Then you will get modules/swf.so which you can then dl() at the top of your script. Just to make things clear, PHP/FI was the basis, not so many people used it in comparison to PHP3/4. business and rented a dedicated server on insidecrew.net for something like
$200 a month ...
Too much you'll say? But we have a root access now on an extremely cute
FreeBSD machine... We are now reselling some of our space to *these who we
know* and the price drops dramatically, we can add more projects AND WE ARE
THE ROOTS not the rats...
So my advice : if you run more then one project, preferably not alone, and
know others who is willing to do the same : add them in and get yourself a
real server!
Of course it only works for these who know the systems ... not for small
businesses... these need some help...
My point is simple: Yes it is better to be hosted by a smaller company, but,
only if they are responsible enough not to put too many others up there ...
and it all have to cost less then a big company, otherwise I myself will
become a company.

Actually, there is nothing wrong with a one-manned hosting service. I agree
with Robert in this, there are a lot of big hosting companies that don't
really have a personal hold of their business to really care about their
clients. To them everything is automated and all they do is hire customer
service people who are only taught to, well, "serve customers" with answers
to questions they don't know in the first place. They just read from the
script and have basic step-by-step trouble shooting instructions in front of
them to solve a client's problems/requests. If you need an updated software
package, like PHP4, froman old PHP3 engine, you'de have to beg for it and
you might have to go through several layers of support just for that request
to go through. Let me remind you that the software is free of charge. If the
request is accepted, then more power to you. If it's not then you'll have to
deal with it until you decide to find another host.
I have one question for you Robert. XML has been in the market for a long
time (since 1998), and the recommendations are now set to a true standard.
Why do most hosting services not have support for XML based languages yet?

I see a lot of traffic regarding php hosting. From experience I know that the general hosting companies provide a minimal PHP environment which is often insufficient for PHP developers. With this in mind, I'm considering offering specialized hosting for PHP projects. The server will be tuned to the needs of PHP projects, and will have the latest PHP4 and mySQL versions, up to date XML libraries, IMAP and POP, and will run php as a apache module for performance. The server will have a low user count and I will offer migration alternatives as user's needs grow. The machines will be hosted at a major data center with multiple large internet feeds, and all the other essential requirements. I plan to be available to users to assist in configuration problems and will stay abreast of developments in PHP to make our projects run faster and better. I'd like to hear from people interested in participating or with configuration suggestions. I'm not looking to start a large hosting company but to be a specialized service provider on a small scale. I am going to have to disagree on this one. I run a successful (and profitable) hosting company(http://www.rolet.com). My employees total 1 (me, myself and I). The number of clients hosted is roughly 120. I provide a wide variety of services on Linux, FreeBSD, NT, and W2K. Yes it is hard to believe that 1 person can be available 24x7, or not take vacations, but this is what I do and LOVE every second of it. I value customer satisfaction and strive to provide that best Internet services possible. For me this is a career for life, not just a job. So I do believe that 1 person can be available 24x7 and not take vacations. Don't get me wrong, some days it is tough. I shouldn't even reply to this... Yes I would host with me. Have you ever heard of a backup plan. People that would step in if something happens to me? People that I trust to keep the company going if it fails. With all due respect, how do people host with a company that doesn't give a rats ass about them or their business. How many big companies redirect your call, or brush you away when problems occur. I been over backwards for my clients. Providing better service then many of the bigger companies out there. That is why people do and will continue to host with me. Like I said, I plan on hiring people in the near future. Things take time to evolve. I am not saying that my company is for everyone. Actually, there is nothing wrong with a one-manned hosting service. I agree with Robert in this, there are a lot of big hosting companies that don't really have a personal hold of their business to really care about their clients. To them everything is automated and all they do is hire customer service people who are only taught to, well, "serve customers" with answers to questions they don't know in the first place. They just read from the script and have basic step-by-step trouble shooting instructions in front of them to solve a client's problems/requests. If you need an updated software package, like PHP4, froman old PHP3 engine, you'de have to beg for it and you might have to go through several layers of support just for that request to go through. Let me remind you that the software is free of charge. If the request is accepted, then more power to you. If it's not then you'll have to deal with it until you decide to find another host. I have one question for you Robert. XML has been in the market for a long time (since 1998), and the recommendations are now set to a true standard. Why do most hosting services not have support for XML based languages yet? Thanks...
