Hi,

Sorry for the very late reply. I am not sure why but your email did not
reach my inbox until today (29th of April), but I don't see a reply to
this email, so I hope "better late than never" applies to this case.

It was removed from the Debian mirrors as well; we no longer have
permission to distribute the "sun-java" in Debian anymore[1]. I suspect
that was the same reason why they disappeared from the canonical mirrors
but I don't know.

At this point, it is probably easiest to download Oracle's non-free and
use "java-package"[2] to create a deb out of it (assuming OpenJDK is not
an option). Even if this advice is too late for that particular
problem, perhaps java-package will be useful to you in the future.

[1] Strictly speaking we might have permission to distribute the old
versions, but there are plenty of security bugs in those that we cannot fix.

2013-04-29 Thread Jim Goddard
Hi,

It appears that the sun-java6-jdk package has been removed from the canonical
mirror, and was subsequently purged from my internal mirror.

I have an urgent and temporary need for this .deb to get me through a test
cycle before I can replace it with a supported Java.

I have spent the morning poking around for the .deb but with no luck, hopefully
some here will take pity on me?

Package: sun-java6-jdk
Version: 6-02-1
Severity: normal

Currently it seems that each minor version is installed in a different
directory. However, the packaging scheme only allows one version of
"Java 6". This useless "high resolution" of directory names bring
several problems for users which need to customize the JDK or JRE in
some way not covered by the links to /etc . There's absolutely no need
to do what the Java package does now, there's no other Debian package
which does this (e.g. having gcc-4.1 4.1.0 and 4.1.1 in different
directories). Suppose a package wanted to divert a file in Java... how
would that package be able to do it without depending on an exact Java
minor version (even when it doesn't need that). I can go on and on,
please fix this. My current problem is the need to move some extensions
from the old jre/lib/ext to the new jre/lib/ext for each minor Java
upstream update.

Thanks.

Hi Marius,

I believe this is the intended behaviour, since jni.h is common over all
platforms, and so, for example, on windows the correct include is
include/win32/jni_md.h

When building your code you can just have both
-I/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/include/ and
-I/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/include/linux/ to set your include paths.

Thanks,
Andy

Hi.

I have written a test now, and that did not fail on the relevant system.

Further investigation proved that I was only able to recreate the
problem on a Tomcat server that had not been restarted since the JDK had
been updated.
A restart fixed the problem.

I am very sorry for the false bug report, and will test more thoroughly
before sending a bug report next time.

Hello.

When running a medium-size simulation program, I get contradictory
performances if "java" is launched with the "-Xint" option or not.

Let me elaborate:
At some point of the simulation, the same quantity Q can be computed in 2
different ways, say "QH" and "QL". When using "QL", the program is about
twice as fast as when using "QL". This is confirmed when using "-Xint".
Leaving out "-Xint" (for maximum performance), the result is, quite
surprisingly, the other way around: Using "QL" is about 50% slower than
with "QH"!

Doesn't this indicate some subtle bug in the JIT compiler?

Note that I recompiled everything with java 1.5, and there, the results
between interpreted bytecode and JIT-compiled code are consistent.

Best regards,
Gilles

Applications implemented in Java (and also in Tcl/Tk and Python with

http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/tmp/Controller.java
http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/tmp/Raisewindow.java

[compile and run with: javac Controller.java ; java Controller]

This test creates 3 windows each with two buttons for raising the other
two using the standard tofront method. To reproduce the bug, run
the program under Metacity, move the windows so that they partially overlap
the others and then try to use the buttons. There will be only a
change of focus but the windows are not raised.
Under other window managers (kwin, sawfish, wmaker, fvwm2) the program
works as expected.

I submitted a bug report to Bugzilla

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=567528

but the last answer to it was that I should file a bug with the
language developers as they "need to provide a way to send
_NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW (and with a correct timestamp!)" when trying
to "bring this window to user's attention".

As Metacity is used by default in many Debian distributions this
problem is likely to severely affect many applications and therefore
two weeks ago I also submitted a general bug report to Debian

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=512401

that was not answered in any way, apart from an automatic reply.

Best regards,
Miguel Filgueiras

Package sun-java6-jdk on sid/amd64 lags behind sid/i386 quite a bit now. That's
a pity, since the current version of Sun Java has quite a list of security
fixes compared to the package in sid/amd64.

I'm tracking sun-java6-jdk from unstable on a system with lenny/amd64
installed, to have security support for the package (OpenJDK is currently no
option, unfortunately).

Will there be further development of sun-java6-jdk on amd64?

Best Regards,
Mirko

Package: tomcat5.5
Version: 5.5.20-2
Severity: important

Hi, installing tomcat 5.5 on a debian etch with sun-java6 installed fails like
this:
S'està configurant tomcat5.5 (5.5.20-2) ...
* Not starting Tomcat: no Java Development Kit found.
invoke-rc.d: initscript tomcat5.5, action "start" failed.
dpkg: s'ha produït un error en processar tomcat5.5 (--configure):

I've looked at init script and there is a list of JDK paths to try:

# The first existing directory is used for JAVA_HOME (if JAVA_HOME is not
# defined in $DEFAULT)
JDK_DIRS="/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4-sun
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.4-blackdown /usr/lib/j2se/1.4 /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.3-sun /usr/lib/j2sdk1.3-blackdown /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-ibm
/usr/lib/j2sdk1.4-ibm /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj /usr/lib/kaffe"

If I manually add the sun-java6-jdk path to the list:
"/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun"
then it can start again.

So this is a workaround...
Should sun-java6-home define $JAVA_HOME ?

Thanks in advance!
