Typing M-x LaTeX-mode returns an error: Invalid face height 0.0. Typing M-x LaTeX-mode again the buffer switches to LaTeX mode. Starting emacs as LC_NUMERIC=C emacs file.tex the problem does not occur. These are my own experience and the above link describes the same problem, I guess, I don't know for sure that it is gtk-qt-engine's fault but I have this problem only recently and have installed the package again recently.
