Bug#797994: synfig: ABI transition needed for libstdc++ v5

2015-09-04 Thread Simon McVittie
Source: synfig
Version: 1.0-1
Severity: serious
Justification: breaks ABI without a package rename
Tags: sid stretch
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: libstdc++-cxx11

Background[1]: libstdc++6 introduces a new ABI to conform to the
C++11 standard, but keeps the old ABI to not break existing binaries.
Packages which are built with g++-5 from experimental (not the one
from testing/unstable) are using the new ABI. Libraries built from
this source package export some of the new __cxx11 or B5cxx11 symbols,
dropping other symbols. If these symbols are part of the API of
the library, then this rebuild with g++-5 will trigger a transition
for the library.

In the case of synfig, std::string appears in functions in public
headers, so it seems very likely that a transition is needed.
The transition normally consists of renaming the
affected library packages, adding a v5 suffix (libsynfig0v5).
The actual SONAME should not be changed when doing this.

If an upgrade to a new upstream SONAME is already planned, and that
SONAME has never been available in Debian compiled with g++-4, then an
alternative way to carry out the transition would be to bump the
SONAME. However, please avoid doing this unless the new upstream version
is very low-risk: the libstdc++ transition has stalled development in
unstable for long enough already.

These follow-up transitions for libstdc++ are not going through exactly
the normal transition procedure, because many entangled transitions are
going on at the same time, and the usual ordered transition procedure
does not scale that far. When all the C++ libraries on which this library
depends have started their transitions in unstable if required, this
library should do the same, closing this bug; the release team will deal
with binNMUs as needed.

Looking at the build-dependencies of synfig:

* boost has already been renamed
* etl seems to be header-only so does not need a transition
* libmagick++ has already been renamed
* libmlt++ is not believed to need a transition (but please check)

so I think this sub-transition may be ready.

The package might be NMU'd if there is no maintainer response. The
release team have declared a 2 day NMU delay[2] for packages involved
in the libstdc++ transition, in order to get unstable back to a usable
state in a finite time.

Regards,
S

Package: mpv
Version: 0.9.2-1+ffmpeg
Severity: normal

The mpv manpage documents a "rubberband" audio filter, which claims to
provide a higher quality pitch correction filter than scaletempo.
However, mpv doesn't seem to support that filter. Please consider
building with the rubberband library (packaged in Debian) to enable the
filter.

I have to correct myself: even the frontend code in faac is licensed
under the LGPL (I mixed this up with the gtkpod+mp4v2 situation). But
parts of libfaac are imposed with further restrictions that make it
incompatible with about any other possible open-source license.

Thanks, Carl Eugen.

When using easytag on files stored in AFS, it blows chunks massively, hanging
forever, perhaps because
it is trying to stat every file in /afs. This needs to be fixed. The gnome
file browser widget has
no trouble; likewise, the openoffice.org file browser widget has no trouble.
easytag is a disaster.

Hi,

So I tried AFS out (using openafs) and although easytag did run very
slowly, everything else using /afs did as well (ls too 10 secs on
various directories). Easytag does stat every file in the directory,
but that seems normal to me for a file browser. For me, gnome's file
open dialog is just as slow. On that basis I'm closing this as either
an AFS issue, or an inherent problem with using networked file systems
with servers far away.

Thanks,
James

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

open a directory in a file browser.

btw, using

probably the reporting script that got confused. Please check the

Bug#798043: lives: creates (and uses) world-writeable directory

2015-09-04 Thread IOhannes m zmoelnig
Package: lives
Version: 2.4.0~ds0-1+b1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

simply starting `lives` will create a new directory `~/livestmp` (in my home),
which is world read and writeable.
i think this is an absolte no-go.

$ cd ~
$ rm -rf .lives* livestmp
$ lives
[...]
$ ls -lhan livestmp/
total 8.0K
drwxrwxrwx   2 1000 1000 4.0K Sep  4 20:35 .
drwxr-xr-x 100 1000 1000 4.0K Sep  4 20:35 ..
$

i would expect any newly created directories to obey (at least) my umask
settings.

furthermore:
i really hate it, if applications clutter my home-directory with automatically
created directories.
now lives has already a wizard that asks me which directory i want to use as a
scratch-dir, but it does so after ~/livestmp has been created...

Bug#797965: BS1770GAIN

2015-09-04 Thread Christoph Anton Mitterer
Peter (=upstream) has asked me off list to check whether:
$ ffmpeg -i in.mp3 -acodec copy -y out.mp3
also makes the resulting files having gaps.
The back story is that bs1770gain apparently somehow uses ffmpeg.

And the answer is yes, after copying the files as above with ffmpeg,
they have gaps when played back.

So apart from the fact that I wonder why ffmpeg is used here at all
(shouldn't just some ID3 tags or that like be written?), it may be an
issue in ffmpeg.

btw: Using ffmpeg, even in copy mode seems to have other issues as
well:

As one can see above here, there's an error that ffmpeg thinks
something would be invalid.
It seems to still write it here, but I'd guess that the copy mode is
still like a full parsing and freshly rewriting.
Sounds like an invitation for all kinds of things going wrong :-(

@Peter: Why exactly do you need to use ffmpeg for writing? Shouldn't it
be enough to write some tags?

Cheers,
Chris.
