Ancient MPlayer version with much more recent FFmpeg. That won't work together.

Since I remember that you have done quite some work on it, I'd think so,
because it shows that the team cares for it.

A suggestion (if someone else is volunteer to put it in nice words):
Mention some of the exciting news happening after the freeze: growth of
active members in the team, a bunch of exciting new packages, and
finally deciding to generally use dpkg source format 3.0 (quilt).

Bug#483836: Can't reproduce this

2010-11-07 Thread Ulrich Eckhardt
Command line is

  vlc http://dump.com/wp-content/uploads/golf.flv

There's a bunch of spurious warnings and errors and the video output is broken
(but it's like that for all videos, which is a different bug), but VLC works
without crashing.

Bug#602708: Video output is X-compressed to 25% and colors are off

2010-11-07 Thread Ulrich Eckhardt
Package: vlc
Version: 1.1.3-1

Greetings!

Any video I try to play is reduced in size and only on the left quarter of the
video area, the rest of the video area is black. Further, the colors in the
video are off, you can still recognize the content though. Lastly, there are
horizontal stripes, somehow like interlacing gone wrong.

When I just run vlc, I get this:
| u...@fruitbox:~$ vlc
| VLC media player 1.1.3 The Luggage (revision exported)

When I drag'n'drop a video onto the window, I get this:
| swScaler: pal8 is not supported as output pixel format
| [0x103aaf58] swscale scale error: could not init SwScaler and/or allocate
memory
| [0x103bb5d8] xcb_xv generic error: no available XVideo adaptor
| object not accessible
| [swscaler @ 0x1042cf30] No accelerated colorspace conversion found from
yuv420p to rgb4.
| object not accessible

The first three lines of this are in red, I'm not sure what this means.
In any any case, VLC itself doesn't display any error, this is only on
the commandline.

About the system, it's an old MacMini G4, a big-endian CPU, using a
Radeon graphic chip. I've also attached the output of xvidinfo in case
this gives some insight.

Cheers!

Uli

a stack overflow exploit was published for vlc [0]. i tried the poc on
unstable, and it didn't work, which is why i've set the severity only to
important. that may be due to payload being windows-only? you may want
to check with upstream to make sure that the linux version is indeed
not affected.

I also can't reproduce on various Linux builds.

Upstream just published http://www.videolan.org/security/sa1006.html and
over IRC confimed it's the same issue.

And from the patch fixing the issue, it's indeed win32 specific.

It's hard to tell without a log and the name of the file tried as

My guess at this point is that the non ASCII filename confuse VLC.

Package: vlc
Version: 0.8.6.c-6+lenny5
Severity: normal

If you try to play a file over http on a powerpc machine (iMAC DV - G4)
vlc crashes with 'illegal instruction'.

As a workaround, it plays the file with :

wget -O - http://server/file (pipe) vlc -

So it seems the problem is really in http code.

Ancient MPlayer version with much more recent FFmpeg. That won't work
together.

mplayer package needs tightened dependencies, then.

As far as I read the reporter's package lists, I think his ffmpeg
libraries are not in sync. FFmpeg's internal dependencies are much
stricter in squeeze, so that this problem shouldn't appear after lenny.

It is perfectly acceptable, although not common. If there are more pd
objects that are small, then just bundle them together.

I just happened to read on the pd-list, that [arraysize] is actually
obsolete, since this functionality is already built into both puredata
and pd-extended: [expr size($s1)]

Personally, I don't see a point in supporting double functionality.
And

since this library doesn't do anything else, I'd actually prefer to
completely disregard it. I don't think that keeping it alive solely
for
the sake of not breaking existing patches with future Debian version
is
a good reason, especially since fixing those patches is so easy. In
this

case I value tidiness of the pd-lib space more than backward
compatibility. Better not adding it in the first place than removing
it

afterwards.

I'm interested to hear other opinions on this.

Roman

pd-arraysize is a special case, not an example of how to do things.
There are plenty of simple packages in Debian, like simple kernel
modules for a very specific device. In general packaging a single
simple object not a good idea, IMHO, but this one has a long legacy.

arraysize has many uses, and is still widely used by people in their
patches, I use it regularly. It is also widely used in many Pd docs.
And many people prefer the simple syntax of typing arraysize vs
expr size($s1). Additionally, expr is GPL and arraysize is public
domain, so some people will use arraysize for that reason (i.e. a
proprietary app based on Pd like rjdj).

i think this is to be discussed on this list.
i don't know whether it's good practice, and esp. i don't know whether
its worse practice than creating a debian package for 2 smallish
files.

It is not good practice, it is a special case based on the upstream
distribution that has existed for many years. Why exclude a useful
package purely because its only two small files? Shall we remove lots
of kernel modules for the same reason/

(esp. in this very case, where the help-patch is fully functional
even

without pd-pddp installed; having pd-pddp only allows to have a
clickable link in the help-patch for more information, instead of a
(harmless) error on the pd-console)

If by fully you mean except the part of the help patch that needs
'pddp'. ;-P The help patch uses an object in pd-pddp. That part
of the

help patch won't work without it.

yes this is esactly what i mean by fully.

the non-working object is mainly cosmetical (in a sense that it
directs you to further reading, but does not provide any primary
information). you should be able to get all the information you need
from the help-patch even with a non-functional [pddp/link] object (and
if not, then there is a serious problem with the help-patch, as it
means

you have to resort to online documentation)

i would sugggest to use a Suggests: pd-pddp at the most.

First off, its key to mention to those not familiar with Pd: the help
patches are fully functional scripts, not just static documentation.
So that means if pddp/link is not available, then that aspect of the
will not work (in this case pddp/link provides a clickable link to a
webpage).

My question here is: why make things deliberately hostile for
newbies? The docs should work and not throw errors when the open
them. I can understand using Recommends if they are installed by
default with no user intervention. I'd prefer Depends for the above
reasons. I strongly disagree about using Suggests here.
