[Pkg-postgresql-public] Bug#840882: Acknowledgement (postgresql-common: Prescribed Upgrade fails)

2016-10-16 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello,
after a reboot I see:
helge@samd:~/texte/TODO$ psql rechnung
psql (9.6.0, Server 9.5.4)
Geben Sie »help« für Hilfe ein.

And on first sight the DB looks fine.

So maybe a full reboot is necessary?

What is strange is, that the server is 9.5.4:
helge@samd:~/texte/TODO$ dpkg -l "*postgres*" | grep ii | grep 5
ii postgresql-9.5 9.5.4-3 amd64 object-relational SQL
database, version 9.5 server
ii postgresql-client-9.5 9.5.4-3 amd64front-end programs
for PostgreSQL 9.5
ii postgresql-plperl-9.5 9.5.4-3 amd64PL/Perl procedural
language for PostgreSQL 9.5

Greetings

  Helge

[Pkg-postgresql-public] Bug#840882: postgresql-common: Prescribed Upgrade fails

2016-10-15 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: postgresql-common
Version: 177
Severity: important

A while ago this machine was installed with testing.

A few days ago I was informed to upgrade postgresql. This worked
flawlessly in previous versions of Debian.

Now I drop the default main in 9.6, i.e.
root@samd:~# pg_dropcluster --stop 9.6 main
Redirecting stop request to systemctl

Now I do the update as prescribe in the upgrade notice:
root@samd:~# pg_upgradecluster 9.5 main
Stopping old cluster...
Notice: extra pg_ctl/postgres options given, bypassing systemctl for stop
operation
pg_ctl: Server fährt nicht herunter
TIPP: Die Option »-m fast« beendet Sitzungen sofort, statt auf das Beenden
durch die Sitzungen selbst zu warten.
Error: Could not stop old cluster

In english:
Stopping old cluster...
Notice: extra pg_ctl/postgres options given, bypassing systemctl for stop
operation
pg_ctl: Server does not shut down
Hint: The option »-m fast« terminates session immediately, instead of waiting
for the session
to terminate itself
Error: Could not stop old cluster

I cannot find any information in /var/log/postgresql.

I'm now lost how to finish the upgrade…

No problem.

Did that, helped and bug is fixed. Thanks.

I initially installed this machine on testing 2005 and run testing
for a long time. Finally it ran Squeeze until a few weeks ago, where I
dist-upgraded to wheezy, removed lots of packages, and dist-upgraded
to testing. Atm I cannot reproduce the exact version history, as this
machine has been retired for a while (as my main machine).

No, all data bases have been imported on my main machine happily
running wheezy.

Thanks for your excellent postgresql database packaging, it is highly
appreciated.

Greetings

Does this help you? I'd really like to get the dist-upgrade to
complete without error.

Thanks!

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

I upgraded a machine from Oldstable to Stable, and I'm now in the
process of upgrading to Testing (Jessie). I upgrade a few packages a
time (and their dependencies, as specified by the package relations)

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

apt-get update
apt-get install … postgresql-common …

   * What was the outcome of this action?

See below for error message

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

No error message, just a sucessful upgrade run.

*** End of the template - remove these lines ***

Please not that after the failed update I retried it with apt-get -f
install. The following is the output:
