Re: [PLUG] cloning old drive

2016-03-02 Thread Denis Heidtmann
I have asked at Free Geek some weeks ago--they just snickered. They do not
keep anything that old.

I have just received a bunch of old drives between 2 and 4 G. If they do
not work, I will take you up on your offer to search your bone pile. That
comment about Compaq does not sound good--if true it could really stand in
the way of our efforts.

2016-03-02 Thread Neal
I don't know if it handles win3.x or not but Macrium Reflect has never let
me down. There's a free version for home use available online, or at least
there was when I cloned the HD on my laptop to an SSD a month ago.

I was going to use CloneZilla but it was way too, uh, flexible for my
attention span that day.

You will no doubt have to play around with the CHT parameters to get a
drive different from the original 1GB to boot. Seems I recall some Compaqs
requiring a system utilities floppy to modify some/most/all BIOS settings.

I might have an old 1GB drive hiding somewhere in the deep recesses of the
computer dung^H^H^H^Hroom if you can't get there with a bigger drvie.
Alternately and probably quicker, does FreeGeek keep anything that small
around, or send them right to the shredder?

It did get to linkedin. I also saw that comment. I haven’t had a chance to play
with it yet, but at the very least, its promising. Doesn’t depend on a single
process to run all the jails either ;-)

[PLUG-ANNOUNCE] THURSDAY: March PLUG Meeting: Networking with Puppet and Cumulus

2016-03-02 Thread Michael Dexter

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement

Who: Kris Amundson
What: Networking with Puppet and Cumulus
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)
When: Thursday, March 3rd, 2016 at 7pm
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live (PSU WiFi Permitting)

Network Switches. This phrase conjures up thoughts of expensive boxes
with operating systems out of reach to the user. While CLIs have
improved, there are times where you really want a bash prompt to install
a cron script or two, or run a packet capture through some python.

That day is here. We now have a few Linux based NOS distributions with a
standard linux-server experience with many ports of line-rate ethernet
interfaces. We will be exploring Cumulus Linux, a Debian-based NOS that
has a growing list of hardware support.

This session will be an introduction to Cumulus and some puppet code on
how to configure them. I'll have some hardware in tow and also discuss
the virtual image.

About Kris

Kris Amundson is part of the Ops team at Puppet Labs here in Portland.
He has been building networks since the mid 90s and his career travels
include working for Cisco VARs, operating PSU's campus network,
co-founding OpenSourcery, building networks atop wind turbines and
running the network for 21 months at the South Pole Antarctica.

Calagator Page: http://calagator.org/events/1250469566

Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

Windows 3.1, Compaq, 1GB hard drive. I am going to guess that this
is a 90's-era system (i.e. about 20 years old). So, that drive
probably uses an IDE connector and the CPU is probably a 486 or
earlier Pentium. It's a small miracle that the system is still
running.

But that's just a guess. Can you provide us with a bit more detail
about the hardware? For example, does it have a CD ROM drive? What
model Compaq is it?

While you may not know what software was used to clone the drive, how
was the clone performed? For example, did you boot from a CD or
remove the drive or something else?

My inclination would be to remove the drive, connect it to a USB/IDE
adapter, image it using dd on a linux laptop, and run the image within
VirtualBox to verify that the imaging worked[1].

Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

I've had very good experiences with Redo ( http://redobackup.org ).

Having said that I've had all sorts of problems (not related to redo) getting
partitioning tables to match exactly and 4k sector alignment, etc...

I'm guessing your going to have to get down and dirty with fdisk / gparted.
Can you post the output of fdisk for each drive?
