[PLUG] Clinic memories, Sunday August 16, 1pm at Free Geek

2012-09-14 Thread Keith Lofstrom
Debra passes on the news that the free geek team will be doing
maintenance Sunday:

From noon to 6pm, We'll be working on recabling and other general server
maintenance. Some of our services may down intermittantly during this time
while we adjust cabling in the server room.

They've done this before on Clinic day - I do not remember any
major problems, and they may appreciate our presence as guinea
pigs and beta testers.

But that is my memory - without a parity bit. If your memory
(RAM, Disk, or neuronal) is also getting flakey, bring your
machine and brain down to the Linux clinic and we will fsck and
brainck to clear the cobwebs. We will erase your nightmarish
digital memories of Windows, replacing them with linux on
your disk and linux skills in your head.

The clinic meets at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th, 3 blocks south of
Hawthorne, every third sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. We have
wired and wireless ethernet (I hope), keyboards, monitors and
mice, distros, and so-called expert advice based on what little
we can remember from our own linux newbie days. We may have
coffee, if I don't forget to bring coffee filters. Forget
about that diet - somebody will probably bring crackers and
cookies, perhaps chocolate. Remember, gigantic is the new
normal.

Your brain will never be the same. Ours aren't.

[PLUG] Clinic this Sunday!!

2011-04-14 Thread John Jason Jordan
Yes, it's this Sunday again, April 17, 2011! It's at Free Geek, 1741 SE
10th Avenue in beautiful east side Portland! It starts at 1 pm and ends
at 5 pm.

Bring your computer with Linux problems and we'll replace them with
brand new problems! Bring your evil operating system and we'll replace
it with a lovely Linux system! Or come and help others solve their
Linux problems. Or come to ask questions. Or just come and look over
shoulders to see what it's all about.

We have monitors, keyboards, meece, and a few other devices. All you
need to bring is the box. And we have the latest versions of major
distros that we can burn to CD for you.* We'll even have coffee and
probably munchables. And mostly we'll have fun!

*The latest Ubuntu that I have is 10.10 because 11.04 won't be released
until April 28. If someone wants the current release candidate I'll
download it; otherwise I'll wait to add 11.04 to my library on the
28th. Of course, I also have 10.04 for those who want to stick with LTS
versions.

it's the third sunday of each month, and yes, that includes this coming

no notice is needed, just show up between 1 and 5 and wait for the next

however, info about the laptop might be helpful to someone so we can look up
the particular challenges involved with installing linux on it, and perhaps
prepare to meet them.

Thanks, Wes. I should have been clearer: I meant I want to provide the
agency for which I volunteer with notice that I won't be coming in this
Sunday, if that's when the Clinic is happening (in case they can find
someone to pinch-hit for me).

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L505 with a 2.2GHz Intel Pentium Dual
Core T4400 processor, 3GB RAM, a Realtek Wireless LAN NIC (which I think
can be a problem). I haven't spent as much time searching as I wanted
to, but there seem to have been a lot of ACPI issues, which may have
been solved (or partially solved) with a recent kernel. I have found
various problem reports and some suggested fixes for similar machines
(in the L505 family) on Ubuntu and Arch Linux forums, but it's hard to
get an accurate sense of the timing (i.e., does a problem and attendant
fix that was reported six months ago still apply now?).

The exact model is L505-ES5018, as reviewed by CNET here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/toshiba-satellite-l505-es5018/4505-3121_7-33970179.html#reviewPage1

I needed a sub-$500 notebook really quickly (as in, buy at retail) --
AFAIK, it's just not possible to get a Linux notebook for that price in
Portland, unless maybe you get really lucky at Free Geek.
