I have it on good authority that if Free Geek is unable to overwrite the
data on any storage device to the point where it cannot be recovered, they
will physically damage the device by driving a large hole through its
storage medium.

I heard they even offer an industry-backed Certificate of Data Destruction,
though the certificate is a paid service (the drive destruction is not
something they charge for).

I assume your machine has either a working CD drive or your BIOS can boot

Thanks, Richard. The non-booting host is a 32-bit system at least a dozen
years old. I don't need it as the new host is a 64-bit Ryzen7 box with 32G
RAM and a 250G SSD for the system and a 2T drive for applications and data.

When I get all desktops, routers, and WAPs re-arranged and working I'll also
find a new home for the Dell Latitude 2100, a nice 32-bit laptop.

Had to do some futzing with postfix (including commenting out
check_policy_services in main.cf) but I'll post on the postfix mail list
about that and a couple of long-standing issues.

So, my schedule for transitioning the desktop server/workstation has been
decided for me. And any bits and pieces I need from the old host can be
copied from the old backup drive.

Germane to the unbootable host, what does FreeGeek do with dead hard drives?

Whew!

It sends it OK.
If you receive this, then all is good.
