Please see previous post describing the commands (wasnit feom Ben?). You
responded that it is not installed on your system - just install it and use
any functional usb3 device to connect with the cable.

If you do not have any such device or cannot follow the procedure - I would
advice that you take the white color as USB 1.1 hint and purchase usb 3
cable which typically has blue insides. It is time effective and cheap way
to be sure.

Hope that helps,
Tomas

Tomas,

It's SATA, not eSATA. on the Mediasonic Probox.

You keep repeating that your cable is white - Are you expecting someone
else to chip in and comment beside earlier advice from to connect some USB
3 device with the cable and see what speed the kernel/driver uses?

The cable itself is black, the inserts of the USB-A and USB-B plugs are
white.

Well, if you know how to check the speed of an unmounted device I'd
appreciate your teaching me how to do this.

Regards,

Rich

esata are standard cables like usb 1, 2, 3, 4. You can just buy them for a
few $$ in your local AMZN store.

You keep repeating that your cable is white - Are you expecting someone
else to chip in and comment beside earlier advice from to connect some USB
3 device with the cable and see what speed the kernel/driver uses?

Hope that helps,

John,

Well, my four-year-old Mediasonic has a white USB cable; I don't know where
I put the eSATA cable.

I mention this experience just so you know that I had a good experience
with Mediasonic replacement parts.

I'll contact Mediasonic and ask for a replacement eSATA cable and hook it up
that way.

Thanks,

Rich

I have a Mediasonic box that I formerly connected with its USB 3.0 port
with a 3.0 cable (everything blue). One day it started disconnecting on
me randomly, and eventually wouldn't connect at all. Next to its USB
3.0 port it had an eSATA port, so I bought an eSATA cable and used it
to connect the box to an eSATA port on my laptop. But then I got a new
laptop that lacked ] an eSATA port, so I contacted Mediasonic and for
about $20 they sold me a new card with both connectors on it, which I
used to replace the original card in the box. The card was just about
6cm square and replacing it was trivial.

I mention this experience just so you know that I had a good experience
with Mediasonic replacement parts.

I still have the original card, now with a dead USB port and a working
eSATA port. I saved it just 'cause I'm a clutter-butt.

Ben,

The tool, pv, is in the SBo repo but not installed. Since I cannot mount the
Probox I probably cannot measure the link speed even if I installed it.

If the square port you mentioned is USB Type B then you need to make sure
the cable matches. You might have a 2.0 cable.

The cable came with the Probox.

UPDATE:

I turned off the Probox, waited a few seconds, then turned it back on. I was
able to mount /media/backup (drive bays 3 and 4 in the Probox), but cannot
mount the LV:
# mount /media/hd1
mount: special device /dev/probox_gv/data_store does not exist

But, the old box is working and even if the USB speed is < 3.0 there's
nothing in eiter the LV or backup that is speed-sensitive.

fdisk -l has /dev/md0 following /dev/sde and /dev/sdf, the HDDs in bays 3
and 4, as well as /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd which were a RAID1 array in virtural
group probox_gv/data_store. I suppose that I need to rebuild the RAID1 array
and the LV. Yes?

Thanks,

Rich
