Re: [PLUG] Using filezilla [RESOLVED]

2019-10-01 Thread Rich Shepard

This issue has been resolved!!

I asked the source to post the file on http://fileconvoy.com/ and send me
the URL to download it.

He did this and I now have the file that refused to be acquired by various
and sundry ftp clients.

Wes,

My sincere apologies! I wondered why you'd ask that.

b) That is a very good question. based on the instructions you shared,
sftp is the correct tool. My best guess as to the problem is that it's not
prompting you for the password, which I presume is what the vendor
supplied to you.

Your best guess is correct: I though I had mentioned that in a message.
Rather than prompting me for the password the ftp server closes the
connection because the password was not provided.

b) That is a very good question. based on the instructions you shared, sftp
is the correct tool. My best guess as to the problem is that it's not
prompting you for the password, which I presume is what the vendor supplied
to you. I can't guess any further without having possession of the username
and password in question, and/or access to the system you're trying to do
this from. There is some critical detail missing.

Wes,

Yes, Slackware is a linux distribution.

My standard file manager is the command line. Regardless, if a GUI file
manager will accept ftp://yourusern...@someserver.tld why do ftp, ncftp,
ncrtpget, sftp, and wget fail to connect or download the desired file?

Ben,

Okay. Tomorrow.

I know a lot of people will recommend Filezilla but you shouldn't need to
use it. I'd try the default and see if you can get that working. Go with
Filezilla only if it has some features you really want/need.

I've used ncftp, ftp, sftp, and wget for years with no problems. I don't
need or want filezilla but thought it was required when I too quickly read the
instructions (now available for download; see my response to Wes' message
for the URL to get the .pdf file.)

Filezilla's server configuration wants to configure my firewall and
router.

I don't want it to touch those. I've no problems using ftp, sftp, ncftp,
wget, and other tools and have no idea why filezilla cannot see there's a

As Wes mentioned, it sounds like you installed Filezilla server instead
of client. I use Filezilla client. It's pretty straightforward for
connecting to a host.

Looks like the client is available at SlackBuilds:

Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer

sftp properly doesn't ask for a password sent in plain text from the command
line.

When I try it without specifying the port (or without specifying the
username) nothing happens. There'a \n and no shell prompt until I stop the
process.

wes,

I tried sftp and it failed to connect. Now they've provided a username and
password I'll try again, specifying those on the command line.

Most likely my mistake was downloading, building, and installing the server
rather than the client from SBo.

Filezilla is software that implements well-known and supported file
transfer types, the same ones you mention below. It is not required to
install the Filezilla client, though if those are the instructions provided
by the file host, that may make lives easier.

What specific steps did you take?

Filezilla's server configuration wants to configure my firewall and router.

This phrasing suggests that you may have actually installed the Filezilla
server component, rather than the client.
