This is the HL-3170cdw.  Printer works perfectly as a plain PostScript
device; or openprinting.org has a PPD for the similar 3070 which works fine:

http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Brother/Brother-HL-3070CW

There is a tiny wrapper program on the Brother site; it appears to only
add support for built-in fonts and set a few other PostScript options...
the installed bits (you can do this in a Docker container) are almost
entirely text and an easily viewed binary that seems just to add the
various strings.

I believe the current model, HL-L3270CDW, should work exactly the same,
although have not tested.

Am 25. Jan, 2020 schwätzte William Lindley so:

moin moin Bill,

Very happy with my Brother color duplex laser (well, really, LED beam)
printer.  Works perfectly with cups ppd.

What model do you have?

When I was looking online everything was pointing at downloading a
proprietary tool from brother's site.

I did find a package for brother printers and it lists two B/W printers.

ciao,

Places like 123inkjets.com have low-cost remanufactured or compatible
cartridges that work perfectly as well.

The only noticeable overall performance difference is that whereas HP
prints duplex pages faster (first-side-first-page,
first-side-second-page, second-side-first-page,
second-side-second-page), the Brother only handles one sheet at a time.
The slower speed, in my experience, is not a problem because the Brother
mechanism is less likely to jam, and is far easier to clear should
anything go wrong.

color laser printer?

2020-01-25 Thread der.hans

moin moin,

Printers come up on here once in a while.

Unfortunately, I need to dead tree something once in a while. I have a few
events coming up where it would be useful to have printed materials.

I'm annoyed at HP due to their proprietary inkjet cartridge games.

I absolutely want something that doesn't require proprietary software.

I want to avoid the proprietary cartridge crap.

I would prefer something that has USB and does not have wireless.

Duplex would be cool.

ThinkPenguin has something. But, HP :(.

Any recommendations that hit the above?

ciao,
