ALL CMS have security issues; Drupal less than others...

Content is generally not expected to be carried on for 10 years and 3
revisions of Drupal, now was it?

The content could be migrated manually with a few mysql queries and manual
table populations, but it's not going to be displayed the same without the
Event Repeat Module (which is currently still under code development for
Drupal 6 and 7 [and not stable under 5 - which the plug-site runs on]).

I have a LOT of drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, vTiger, and few trillion others,
with Ubercart, etc. It's a trade-off really, just like the inane arguments
over which distro is better

Drupal and any CMS is only as good as the developer, and those without
experience with a tool, tend to search for another and bash it, usually
going away in the volunteering process. Laugh!

That means that your connection was refused.

So, you probably have strict checking on in your /etc/ssh/sshd_config and
you named your new system the same as the old one.
You can remove your known_hosts file from ~michael/.ssh/known_hosts file.
You can turn off strict checking also in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file (not
recommended, even if you ARE on a trusted network).

If it is working, it is a derivative of this or another bug. I would

If I go to tools/preferences/audio/output module and change it

However the audio does resume after I pause playback. I can try

I have to go to San Diego to see a doctor, so I really appreciate someone

Firewire support under VirtualBox

I (almost always) agree. I have an M-Audio FireWire Solo recording interface.
Basically an external sound card with balanced inputs & outputs and a higher

Has anyone out there in linuxland tried this?

Yes, and those are just the known issues.

Run sql injection tools and tests and see where one gets?

There really are a great many problems and potential issues (due to failure
to install correctly) and php/mysql web system.

Re: Ubuntu Desktop locks

2009-07-23 Thread John
Yes, do you have the article link that you could share.

Mine started locking up as well. KDE 4.2.4 was worse as every morning I'd come
back and it would be in low graphics mode. I switched to Gnome and it would
freeze every other day. I'm running some php laconica scripts in the background
that are known for memory leaks but I have a cron job restart the processes
every 3 hours. I attributed my freezes to the php scripts. I'm using the nvidia
drivers for the 5200 and I don't have Compbiz enabled. When it happens you
can't ssh in so I can't restart my comp when I'm on the road.

Thanks for any info.

John

Re: Help - Just Hosed My Grub 2 Install and Can't Boot

2009-12-28 Thread Mark Phillips
Thank-you for your suggestions. I also found this link that was helpful as
well - http://linuxers.org/howto/how-fix-grub2-error-15-ubuntu. I was able
to boot into my Debian partition with your help, and after running
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc one more time, grub found my windows partition and
my dual boot grub 2 install is working again!

Next time I will wait to finish my first cup of coffee before I try anything
more taxing than reading email;-)

Thanks again!

Re: LinkedIn Connect Request

2011-02-04 Thread Brian Cluff
LOL didn't come from AOL, I was seeing it used on IRC before AOL existed
and years before AOL was ever hooked to the Internet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lol

I usually saw the variation on LMAO used most in the channels I frequented.

Did you know that any self respecting Unix/Linux/BSD purist would not
associate with anyone who used "LOL" even in jest?

LOL derived from AOL. "You've GOT Mail" fame.

We used IRC, not any of the OTHER services, like AOHELL

Now that's funny!

Re: sshd - Setting your ports at 2222 or another port above 1024

2011-03-20 Thread Lisa Kachold
Sorry,

Actually the first link (on securitytube) shows how to get a shell.

The correct second link shows how to gain root from a shell account from a
(modern OS) kernel exploit (on 64bit OS [which many cloud and internet
servers now run]):

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/205867/linux_kernel_exploit_gives_hackers_a_back_door.html

http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2010/Dec/85

Or if you run older kernels:

http://it.slashdot.org/story/08/02/10/2011257/Linux-Kernel-26-Local-Root-Exploit

And if you want the videos:

http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+kernel+exploits+video&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Well, from the time Sony criminalized the original jailbreaking kid who
simply wanted to load up linux on his PlayStation, without also minding
their technical and security pee's && cues, it's been laughable.

Aren't they required as part of PCI Compliance to maintain security?
Any one of MANY of the Anon members have access to thousands of nodes to DoS
from.

But I feel for you --- not that anyone is expected to really do anything
with your data.

I also really doubt that Sony has logs of what was taken, just proof that
they accessed the servers upon which that data is warehoused.

Re: GoDaddy sold

2011-07-03 Thread Lisa Kachold
Steven,

Everyone "projects"
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_projection>onto others
what they feel themselves at first onion layer. Some of us can
identify our feelings (jealousy, or another of the 7 deadlies) and extract
gossip from fact to understanding of process and duties in technical
professions and shops.

At GoDaddy.com ticket hockey is a large part of most of the jobs, requiring
a specific type of conformist.

Their top linux people and developers are deeply involved; they allow little
creative thought or engineering direction from the mass of employees.

It's their culture. Unfortunately GoDaddy.com has dropped in the hosting
rankings over the last few years, perhaps due to inability to innovate, poor
support for common users, and management shakeups.

PLUG Linux Security Network HackFest TOMORROW Noon --> 3PM

PLUG HackFest GOES virtual via hamachi tunnel network <15 users per network;
target will be attached to both networks>

Hamachi HowTo
Here's how to install hamachi if you are confident that you can protect your
systems outside of a LiveCD :

Get hamachi for your systems:

See https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp

 # wget $sourcefile4URsystems
 # tar -gxvf hamachi-0.9.9.9-20-lnx.tar.gz
 # cd hamachi-0.9.9.9-20-lnx
 # more README
 # hamachi-init
 # hamachi start
 # hamachi login
 # hamachi join obnosis
 or
 # hamachi join pluglabs

You will be prompted for a password; these will be announced with the HackFest
networks from the IRC banner.

Then you can run commands selecting the device of ham0 which will show up with
an IP:

tcpdump -i ham0

nmap via any Hamaci tunnel address works great

If you are using a BackTrack BT3 LiveCD, just choose Hamachi from the
"maintaining access" menu section under Backtrack.

IRC

We will be communicating during the HackFest on the PLUG IRC List:

If you just want to watch feel free to Join our IRC channel:
 freenode.net - #pluglabs

Other Information

Phone Support

Feel free to call me with questions.  I might setup a nice camera portal if I
can find a free node.

Re: Anyone Played with OpenQRM?

2009-03-23 Thread Mike Schwartz
OK, I edited that wikipedia page, to add a link saying
> (see the OpenQRM web site <http://www.openqrm.com/>).

where that hyper link points to the URL

By the way, one of the previous replies in this PLUG-discuss thread, seemed
to (accidentally?) change C to Q:

> http://opencrm.org OpenCRM [...]

instead of

> http://openqrm.org OpenQRM [...]

Was that just a TYPO? ...because, I don't think we are [intentionally]
changing topics in the middle of this thread... (right?)
By the way, that URL with a C vs. Q, seems to "forward" to some place like
http://www.xtuple.com// ...

Re: HackFest Series: Roo HoneyNet LiveCD [& Conflicter Infection Test from HoneyNet.org]

2009-05-04 Thread Lisa Kachold
Joe Stewart is currently "Director of Malware Research" at SecureWorks (a
private securityconsultancy) [read reverse engineering, highly trained lab
dog & sec-con hobo]. Joe has participated in development for:
http://www.joestewart.org/?page_id=5

and submitted extensive virus content contributions and research to various
projects. Most of the top level reverse engineers nationally interact either
via test venues, information sharing or conferences.

So, yea, he's a Honeywell project contributer (or reverse engineer).

Knowing the right source is important for all communications!

Why are you addressing the PLUG list for this?

There are router support forums?

Gee, can't we design a new logo ourselves and sell  them from like Cafe Press

We just request design submissions from EveryOne?

Maybe make our own version of the README type shirt?

That first shirt is really creative!

It's funny. When I went looking for a picture of our PLUG t-shirts, I
found none in my collection of PLUG event photos. I could only find the
one from the Beijing Linux User Group! See it here:
http://www.beijinglug.org/en/index.php?option=com_rsgallery2&Itemid=45&page=inline&id=354&catid=18&limitstart=1

Dennis tells the story of sending the shirt to China:
http://lists.plug.phoenix.az.us/lurker/message/20070724.155119.a550115d.en.html

He later told us about the picture here:
http://lists.plug.phoenix.az.us/lurker/message/20070822.135150.36754d1f.en.html

So, yes we had shirts made, years ago. We sold them for $15 each and
apparently ran out. Then a stash was recently found in a former
Steering Committee Chairman's closet and we sold some more. I still
have a few in my cubicle at work for selling at the Devel Meetings,
though they are just a few smalls and two mediums left.

I have some shirts, but no pictures of them! ;^)

I will contact UAT to investigate using another room in our same time
slot. This will be a good adjunct to the overlap in schedules for the odd
Installfest that falls on the same day (2nd Saturday).

UAT is an acceptable venue.

We may also contact DeVry since we have a longtime relationship with David

Re: PLUG-Security List Removed Now?

2010-09-30 Thread Lisa Kachold
Hey Brian, how the heck are you?

Yes, I was the one who reported the DNS outage first, after looking into
this.

Thanks for your response.

I know DNS very well, rebuilt all the 8 linux dns servers at Skymall, and
through the dot.com startup years I had an Internic host name login for
doing SWIP and directly registering our thousands of domains at Teleport,
SpireTechnologies, GSTIS.Net, WorldNet,Ausnet a few more.

How is your little atom? Did you trade it off for something else, give it
to your wife or use it as a hack work test machine?

Re: GoDaddy sold

2011-07-05 Thread keith smith

The boom of 2000 was all big business and investors who saw the Internet for
the first time as a viable revenue producing instrument.  During 1999 everyone
was talking about how they were going to get into the Internet once they became
Y2K compliant.

The boom was everyone getting into the game.  The bust was because most did not
understand this new thing called the Internet.

Re the economy: Likely it increases sales. People are looking to make money,
start new businesses, expand the current business, etc. Plus people who
get laid off have time. For $3/Mo. you can start a / put your business on
online. Remember the last .com boom happened after the economic crash of the
late 80's.

Steven,

Everyone "projects" onto others what they feel themselves at first onion
layer.  Some of us can identify our feelings (jealousy, or another of the 7
deadlies) and extract gossip from fact to understanding of process and duties
in technical professions and shops.

At GoDaddy.com ticket hockey is a large part of most of the jobs, requiring a
specific type of conformist.

RE: Server Logs

2009-03-29 Thread Lisa Kachold

If this is a hosted solution, like one of the XEN's at GoDaddy, or another
solution where you actually don't have command line access, they should be able
to do your monitoring, but if this is a solution to an issue with their
performance or throughput costs, it's going to be throwing bad effort after
good.

Change providers, get a portion of a rack or get a complete professional
systems administration re-architectural look. There are real cheap and s-hexy
ways to setup your systems.

Thanks for all the pointers!

This is a simple setup. One store on one server and an informational site and
a small store on the other. The third is for backups and fail over.

While I have been messing with Linux for over 10 years I feel I'm not quite
there when it comes to "managing" a server. These are actually managed servers
however I have to do stuff like add or remove users... once in a while
configure a virtual host Lately I've been asked questions about why the
server is slower than other times and if there is anything going on out of the
ordinary.

I've looked through the HTTPD logs and I think it was /var/log/messages and
something else that I do not now recall. Beyond that I'm not sure what else I
would do.

I do appreciate everyones help!!

You might just benefit from installing awstats, which will give you a nice log
platform.

Awstats can be a security risk, but in order to really see what's happening,
awstats is great.

Your logs can be heavily configured in many ways, and it's going to depend on
which LAMP platform you built and what you need to watch.

A log retention policy is an important item for Systems Administration, and
especially for web systems.
If your cluster is load balanced, you want to see which server is taking what
load.
You can export your log location and mount that location for the awstats to
read.

While you can laboriously setup extended headers, either of two classic types
of extended or standard apache logs, awstats is still going to give you at a
glance error 404, page not found, 302 redirects, referrers, spiders and more in
eye glazy clear style.

Hi,

I am a programmer so my server admin skills are on the basic end. I

I'm looking for a simple reference that will tell me what logs to look
at, how often to look at them, and what to be looking for.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You can automate this somewhat by installing and configuring "logwatch"
(yum install logwatch). It will run periodically and email you any
interesting things that happened with the logs.

OT: Layer 1 OSI Security: Lockpicking

2009-07-12 Thread Lisa Kachold
Lockpicking is a good skill that can be learned very quickly:

1) Using a beer can hand made (or commercial type) shim:
http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/189/48/ [Presented at the last
HackFest]

2) Break a MasterLock:
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/382100/tutorial_on_lockpicking/

3) Obtain a Combination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHXgOxSGznE

4) Good basic pin lock pick guide: http://www.gregmiller.net/locks/

At the very least anyone should be able to quickly master #1.
