cover art in iPeng?

I like the ease of touch artwork, but with friends at the helm it can be
problematic. Is there anyway to have an undo function?

I thought about that (long time outstanding bug). The problem is: there
is no way to guarantee that this succeeds on the iPeng side.
Long playlists can take minutes to load, Squeezebox Server is EXTREMELY
slow in processing the current playlist. So what do I do when the
playlist isn't complete? Wait a few minutes?

So undo would have to reside on the server.
One way could be to autosave the current playlist to a file before
issuing a command but that, too, could take a few seconds, although I
believe Logitech experimented with this for the Touch UI. Maybe I
experiment with it, too :)

Sorry about the difficult suggestion, but as I see it the playlist
change is editing, and most end users editors have a sort of oops I
didn't mean to do that mode.

I think this would crack many of the party mode etc. comments. Great
you'll take a look.

I fully agree it should be there.
It's just that it should be implemented on the server side, should be
fairly simple to do there.

I think it should be possible to do on the server side as a plugin. You
don't need to save the playlist to file, it's enough to store it in the
database if that's faster.

It should be pretty fast as long as you don't have gigantic playlists
but gigantic playlists doesn't work good with SBS anyway, so...

If performance is a problem the plugin might even store the old
playlist in primary memory and don't save it to disk at all.

I wonder how much history it would need to have ?
Is it enough to undo one step ?

It's also possible to have different scenarios for different
operations:
- Should it be possible to undo a add operation ?
- Should it be possible to undo a delete single track operation or
just a operation that replaces the whole playlist ?

The problem was the Controller locked up so much that it didn't detect
when you released the button. The ir codes got sent continuously until
the Controller's resources became overwhelmed and it crashed. Not good.
I will re-investigate now 7.4 has been released, it may be better than

As long as you just keep it in RAM it should not be a big issue to do
10 or even 100 steps, shouldn't it? I mean, we talk about a number of
URLs here, not large data structures.

I'd say it should simply save the previous state for any operation
acting on the current playlist. That's really not a lot of data for
adding/removing single tracks, the full PL only has to be saved for
clear.

If implementing as a plugin I think you need to save the state after
someone has modified the playlist because I don't think there is any way
to hook in before a change. However, the end result will be the same:

1. Current playlist is empty

2. Album1 is played to playlist
- Save state with playlist based on Album1

3. Album2 is played (playlist clear and album2 added to it)
- Save state with playlist based on Album2

I think there might be some cases, at least in Custom Browse, where
playing a album actually issues a play command for each track on the
album. In that case there will be 12 states to save (one for each
track). This scenario was what I was trying to avoid by not saving a new
state when a track is added. An added track would just update the
previous state. A undo operation in this situation probably want to undo
to the playlist before the album was played in one single step. Of
course, there are probably other ways to accomplish this too.

The reason Custom Browse issues a play command per track is that it can
be a filtered menu that just shows some tracks of the albums, for
example tracks rated with 4 stars.

Anyway, it requires some work but it should be possible to implement
for someone that has the time and interest to do it.

The Controller (within LUA) is singlethreaded and has a simple
eventqueue. If you do a long-running task (like repeatedly sending
events) in a LUA-method, subsequent events only get queued but will
never trigger.

In the thread about the Radio architecture (the developers or beta
forum) in the beginning there was some discussion about multithreading
in LUA.
Maybe you have a look there to get some inspiration (though I'm not
sure if this might lead to a solution).

From an iPeng perspective I would find it easier to save the state
BEFORE I issue a command (because that's when I know I will do that), so
if a plugin provides the feature iPeng could precede each command with a
save state command.
For incremental changes it could also provide some information about
what kind of command this is (add, play, clear,...)

Don't know about CustomBrowse, though, and this would also probably
fail on plugins like Dynamic Playlists or Random Play.

Erland / Pippin

I think this undo suggestion would really make a large amount of the
community very happy. It stops all the variety options issues, but
fundamentally allows all users to try and use the product as intended,
but with no playlist lost disasters. I hope something can be done.
Logitech would love this, it would save a whole load of grief that has
ben around for a long time - party mode etc.

If you want any help on testing / evaluation as I have recently ceased
working for a living, I can commit some time to test scenarios etc. as
required.

This is playing through both SoftSqueeze and a SqueezeBox 3; the server
has no AV software installed (but is clean and is used for nothing
else).

The Windows XP server config hasn't changed AFAIK — the streams just
stopped working one day (though I can't rule out a Windows update or
23...).

All other streaming radio stations seem to be OK — it's just the
iPlayer streams that won't work.

pippin;502450 Wrote:
From an iPeng perspective I would find it easier to save the state
BEFORE I issue a command (because that's when I know I will do that), so
if a plugin provides the feature iPeng could precede each command with a
 save state command.
For incremental changes it could also provide some information about
what kind of command this is (add, play, clear,...)

Don't know about CustomBrowse, though, and this would also probably
fail on plugins like Dynamic Playlists or Random Play.

It feels like this should be handled completely on the server side and
just offer a undo JSON command which iPeng can use. That way the
functionality can be provided also for Controller and IR remote users.

However, if you want to have as little logic as possible on the server
side and only support iPeng, a solution with a separate save state
command will probably make the plugin part easier. Although, I'm pretty
sure Logitech won't implement a save state solution in Squeezeplay.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer stopped working - hangs on Waiting to sync

2010-01-04 Thread bpa

Don't use Softsqueeze for testing as it has its own problems and could
be muddying the issue.

Make sure no player is synced.

Where are you based - inside or outside the UK ?

Can you use tune-in on Web UI to play this URL on your SB3
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4.asx

If the above fails then the issue is not BBCiPlayer plugin but the BBC
URL.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Podcast Player and Squeezeslave

2010-01-04 Thread nonnoroger

Squeezebox Server 7.4.1 on OS X Snow Leopard
Squeezebox Radio - Podcast Player works fine
Squeezebox Controller - Also works fine

I am using Squeezeslave on the Mac Mini hosting the server as this is
the only software player that I have found that lets me:
1. Play 96/24 files
2. Select the output device on the Mac Mini (I use a M2Tech HiFace)
3. Synchronize with the hardware players

I control Squeezslave through the Controller or through SqueezePlay and
most things work just fine - MyMusic albums etc.

I can access the Podcast Player on Squeezslave as normal and select my
configured podcasts which play fine on the Radio and Controller. Now
Playing claims the podcasts are playing.

Only problem is that they are in fact not playing - no sound.

I would be very grateful for any pointers!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer stopped working - hangs on Waiting to sync

2010-01-04 Thread Adlopa

Make sure no player is synced.

And there lies the key...

I have the SB3 synced with SS (for reasons to convoluted to explain)
and when I disable syncing, the SB3 works normally with iPlayer.
SoftSqueeze (SS), however, still will not connect to an iPlayer stream —
and this is after it worked normally for a long time.

That said, an upgrade from SS 3.7 to 3.8 appears to have fixed the
problem and iPlayer streams are playing normally on both SB3 and SS,
even when they're synced. So, problem solved — though I've no idea how.
Could a recent SqueezeBox Server or iPlayer update have introduced an
incompatibility..?

Thanks for the pointer that lead to the fix, bpa!

There should be some default shares on your TS119 - one of mine is

In the Windows run box on the start menu, enter the name of your NAS

You should see all the public shares. You can drag and drop music to
these as though it was another folder on your computer. You might wish
to create a directory to put them in - I have two - one called Music

Version 0.3 is available for download from the link in the first post

1) New Reload Configuration option in Settings menu to reload the xml
file configuration after making changes without having to restart the
controller (experimental)
2) Screensaver is disabled when in a SqueezeIR menu. Default behaviour
can be overridden by adding screensavertrue/screensaver into the

[SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update on SB Controller/SqueezePlay

Should James' iTunes Update plugin work on the SqueezeBox Controller?
I'd like to be able to set track ratings with my new toy!

Looking at the plugin code there are some references to Jive and some

My ideal UI would be a facility to view and change the current rating

I'm not sure if iTunes Update has its own user interface on the
Controller but if you install TrackStat you should get a Rating menu in
the track details and if you change a rating through this menu iTunes
Update should pick it up and change the rating in iTunes. This only
works for setting ratings, the TrackStat menu will only show ratings
available in the Squeezebox Server database.

If you're using SBS 7.4.x, you really ought to be using the beta
version of the plugin. Use

A good place to start is:

Another tip is to start with some simple plugin and modify it for your

with playlists:

You probably need more help after you have looked at this a bit. Let's
not hijack pippin's thread for this, instead I'd suggest that you post
in the Developers section of the forum if you have more questions and
someone will be able to help you.

If you have done some programming, have some time and are willing to
learn you have a good start. I think people, like myself, who is used to
Java or other more modern object oriented languages are more frustrated
with perl than people who don't know any modern object oriented
language. It is a bit messy and before I know Squeezebox Server I
thought perl was just another way of writing shell scripts and not a
language anyone use for applications. Many sources on internet mainly
show examples of perl usage in small shell scripts so this is something
that's good to be aware of when you search for information. The syntax
is more or less the same when it's used in applications, it's just
packaged in *.pm files instead of *.pl files.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Use your DirecTV Remote with your Squeezebox

2010-01-04 Thread maggior

I recently purchased a Boom for our bedroom which places an SB3 (aka
Classic) and a Boom in the same room. This brings about the problem of
controlling one squeezebox and not affecting the other. As many of you
are aware, the way to handle this is to configure one of the
squeezeboxes to use the JVC DVD player control IR codes.

I don't own any universal remotes or JVC DVD players, but I do have
DirecTV. The remotes that I have for my boxes are programmable. So,
rather than add a remote, I decided to try to get my DirecTV remote to
work with my squeezebox.

I got something to work that I have found useful. I think others may
find this useful too, so I thought I'd post my files.

It occurs to me as I write this that this could be useful with Booms as
well since it's remote has limited functionality.

Before I describe how to set this up, let me explain how the remote is
laid out as I've set it up. You will see that it isn't exactly the most
intuitive layout. This is largely because many of the buttons on the
remote are not active when AV1 or AV2 is selected. Other buttons will
only control your TV no matter what mode is selected. For this reason,
the volume up/down, channel up/down, mute, and prev buttons don't work
when controlling another device, so they couldn't be used here.

Here is the mapping of the buttons:
DTV.SB Equivalent
=

A quick note on the button names. The REPEAT button is the one in
between the rewind and stop buttons. The NEXT button is the one in
between the stop and fast forward buttons.

Unfortunately, the buttons GUIDE, ACTIVE, LIST, BACK, and INFO are not
active on the DTV remote when set to an AV mode. This is why only EXIT
and MENU are used in my mapping.

The rational behind the number key layout is that the bottom 3 rows of
buttons on the SB candy bar remote are mapped to the top 3 rows of
number keys on the DTV remote, except for 2. This is where the 0 would
be on the candy bar remote. I mapped this to the oddball button of
sleep. If you look at the two remotes and examine the mapping, you will
see what I mean.

I chose to do the number key mapping because I only use the number
buttons when performing searches (which is actually rare). Even though
I've overridden the functionality here, they will continue to work in
this way when in search mode. I have not done any other testing of the
number buttons.

OK, now for the nitty gritty details. The DTV remote model that I have
is the RC32. I believe this to be pretty common. I also am running
Linux, so the files are Linux format. If you are a Windows user, these
will most likely work. When editing them, use an editor that can edit
Linux files. Wordpad can handle this. I am also running 7.3.3 of
squeezecenter. I don't know how this will work on the current 7.4.x
lines.

1) Program your DTV remote
- Slid the AV switch on top to AV1 or AV2
- Press mute and select at the same time and wait for the light to
flash 2 times.
- enter the code 20623

2) Copy the files from the attached archive (Custom.map and
dtv_jvc_dvd.ir) to the directory /usr/share/squeezecenter/IR

3) Using the web UI, go to the settings of the player you wish to
control with your DTV remote. Use the dropdown to get to the remote
settings. Check the box dtv_jvc_dvd. Uncheck Slim_Devices_Remote
and jvc_dvd if you want to control the squeezebox exclusively with the
DTV remote. For Remote Button Functions, select custom.

4) Restart squeezecenter with the command /etc/init.d/squeezecetner
restart.

The remote should now be functional. As a quick test, press the PWR
button on the DTV remote with the AV slide switch set to the appropriate
setting. This should power your squeezebox on and off.

For windows and Mac users, you need to program the DTV remote the same
way. Search for the IR directory and put the files there. Start and
stop squeezecenter however you normally do for your environment.

If you find this useful, great! Let me know if you have any
suggestions.

Enjoy!
