Are your remote connections just web/stream.mp3? If so, use an Apache
reverseproxy setup for remote connections and require authentication in
the Apache layer. Or set up a VPN. Your SBS will be at risk for certain
types of attacks (esp. DNS rebinding), but so far I don't think anybody
has seen real-world exploits targetting SBS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Whitebear updated version

I can use Foobar UPnP Controller to choose a SBS player, and see what is
playing on that player. I can control the playback position of the current
track and control the volume of the player; I can pause playback, or stop
playback. But I can't play once stopped, go to previous or next track, or show
the playlist.

Okay. I think what would be best is for an enhancement to SBS to allow local
connections without authentication. i.e. a mode to allow local connections
without authentication, but enforce for remote connectons. I don't know if
that is possible, but it sounds like a good idea ;-)

I tried the latest version of Whitebear, and indeed I don't get the socket
error. However, it doesn't seem to be working still. I assume from your mail
that playing music now works with authentication, but may not retrieve artwork?

I'm using Foobar2000. I can browse my SBS library through Foobar, but get an
error reported by Foobar when I try to play anything.

Unable to open item for playback (Unsupported format or corrupted file):
"http://192.168.1.2:31415/music?track_id=85651;tgt_fmt=l16";

I stopped SBS to clear the log and restart, and noticed the issue I first
reported about multiple error dialogs in Whitebear. I had to kill the process
to stop the popups.

I didn't have to do anything really. Just followed the figures on the
master list as you suggested. The volume ones didn't work, but
everything else did! But, as I said, the 'volume' codes that were
supposed to be for an Arcam receiver worked fine. Power toggle didn't
work either, but On and Off did. I have a vague idea why that might be,
but don't really want to go into learning it in that much depth! As for
Panno TV, I'll just use the IR software (NoviiMedia) on my iPAQ, which
is ace to do that. Can't have everything!

Thanks again - I'll keep viewing developments!

Hi Phil,

I have been thinking deeply about this. If you choose to set up
Squeezebox Server to require authentication of clients that is your
choice. But given your requirement for authentication it is certainly
not the role of the middleware (in this case Whitebear) to try to
circumvent the authentication scheme by interpolating itself between
the client and the server.

Therefore I decided that will NOT add such proxy/authentication server
capability to Whitebear. If you want your UPnP Control Points to
download the artwork (and also MP3 streams) from Squeezebox Server,
then you must ensure that the UPnP Control Point client provides the
necessary credentials on its own behalf.

I have tested it with Windows Media Player, and at least this client
does have the capability to provide credentials and authenticate itself
against Squeezebox Server. However, I am pretty sure that you will find
that some of the UPnP Control Points out there do not have that
capability.

However, notwithstanding the abopve, I have posted a new version of
Whitebear on my web site that fixes the other authentication related
issues that you mentioned in your earlier e-mail. (Such as the 5
character limit, and the socket error).

No worries. RC-5 is one of the simpler protocols but working in
hexidecimal can be a bit of a headache. Wikipedia has a nice article
on RC5 if you're interested (search for 'RC-5').

Cancel my last posting - with much brain-ache I've now got everything
working! And with a menu. It's absolutely brilliant - thank you so much

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Timespeller/MusicInfoSCR time isn't updated on Transporter second display

2010-10-08 Thread d_peter

The spelled time screensaver has been a favourite of mine for a while
now. Always gets a smile from visitors.

On my new transporter I've set up TIMESPELLER on the second display as
the screensaver while playing. However it isn't being updated
regularly. It's updated when the track changes but that isn't
frequently enough.

Same problem when it is the screensaver when stopped, but then I think
it is never updated.

CURRTIME works OK in both cases though, and I'm happy with that, but I
wondered if anyone had time to take a quick look to see if it's
possible to get TIMESPELLER to update frequently on the second screen?

Thanks

Pete
