You can disable the lookup and pre-caching in the plugin's settings. But
it doesn't use local artwork for artists yet. I first have to figure out
what strategy to use. Any input is welcome.

As with all of the scanner it's a trade-off: 99% of all users (I'll
generously drop the decimals ;-)) are scanning once every few weeks or
months, and they don't have 100s of thousands of tracks. They prefer to
have quick access at the cost of a scan every now and then. You otoh seem
to be spending more time scanning than using LMS :-).

Now if you can tell me how LMS should find that matching artist.jpg in a
timely manner, that would be great. But add an artist.jpg to the mix
won't do it. Where will it be stored? In the artist's own folder (only
works if the folder structure is set up this way)? In album A by the
artist? Any album? Which one?

As mentioned in reply to jjzolx you can disable the scanning task. But
browsing artists will be painfully slow. I'll probably add another option
to not show artwork there at all.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Music Artist Information plugin

2013-10-20 Thread audiomuze

I don't generally rescan as often as my recent posr might imply - it's
just that I've a ton of metadata I've been collecting over the years and
I finally reprocessed my entire collection's tags to leverage the
metadata in LMS. That of course showed inconsistencies which I've been
working to eliminate, necessitating some rescanning to give effect to
the corrections. Added to that I've had to reorganize my files to spread
across multiple drives ;-)

Suffice to say the end result has been worthwhile in that I can now
become pretty specific re the type of music I want to listen to when
using random play. Any chance more criteria could be added to random
play e.g. AND criteria rather than only supporting OR conditions, and
the ability to add Years to the criteria ;-)

If I set up a VPN with a London based connection I can play the URL fine
in foobar and it shows as ~128k aac.

I am in the UK but I'm only with a small ISP. Could it be related to

Can you open the files you quote in a browser - this would indicate if

Ok, I've just put this playlist:

into foobar again.

It came up with this error:

-Unable to open item for playback (File Not Found (404)):
http://bbcmedia.ic.llnwd.net/stream/bbcmedia_lc1_6music_p?s=1382257281e=1382271681h=4304789706ce245ce32abde13056ca6a;

I put the first URL:

http://bbcmedia.ic.llnwd.net/stream/bbcmedia_lc1_6music_p?s=1382257281e=1382271681h=4304789706ce245ce32abde13056ca6a

into Chrome - which gave this error:

-The source you requested could not be found.-

into firefox - which gave this error:

-The file you requested could not be found-

and into IE - which gave a 404 error page.

I then turned the VPN on again, Chrome and IE started downloading
straight away (no sound) and firefox sat and did nothing.

First off, we are dealing with Local Music.

We don't have an Artist until we have a Track with an artist tag.

Tracks are usually organised into Albums of a single artist but can be
in an album of multiple artists (in the case of a compilation or Various
Artists album). There can be many albums for an artist.

I suggest a simple rule for building the browse by artist images:
If Scan Artist Image option is yes, then when a new artist is
encountered, scanner stores the first artist.jpg found where artist.jpg
is in the album folder just like cover.jpg .
When there are no more new artists, if no artist.jpg exists for an
artist then lookup lastFM or whatever you do now.
In other words, building the table of artist images is two phase, the
first phase is getting artist.jpg from the local files, the second phase
looking up and storing images from the web

When browsing from a track's or album's context menu then try for
artist.jpg in the current (track's) folder and if not found get the
image stored by the scanner.

Please not that the first time you fire up that page, load time can be

Yes, it's caused by an API change on LastFM side:

They have removed ability to get a list of artist images but the good
news is that they at least still allows you to retrieve a single artist
image and a single album image.
The plan is that I'll publish a new version later this week which cycles
through a single artist image and a single album image. Hopefully they
will keep the possibility to at least retrieve a single image also in
