Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Material Skin

2021-03-28 Thread MarSOnEarth

This has been the subject of many debates over the years (I went back
only to 2019), but only now it became relevant to me. I wasn’t paying
much attention to the datails at the time, but since all the people
involved in those conversations seemed happy with the arrived at
solution, I assumed that it was a good one. But now, after a couple of
exchanges with ‘Sam F.’ in the “Denon AVP Control Plugin” thread, I
realized that:

a) My settings for the players I have were not optimally correct, and
b) The way Material Skin (MS) treats the correct for such players
settings needs to be (still) changed.

The bottom line is that MS, as a controlling interface, should not be
concerned which down-stream device responds to a command, or how, it
should just send that command, which, BTW, is what the Classic skin
does. Craig had it right in 'this'
post.

The setting in question is “Volume Control” (in
Player-settings->Advanced->Audio), and the type of player that is not
being served well with current approach in MS is software player, like
‘squeezelite’, running on, as it’s common, RPi hardware, or any device
that has its own built-in pre-amplifier.
Let’s consider. The RPi can be, at minimum, represented functionally as
a pre-amp, and when plugged into a standalone amplifier through its RCA
(analog) out, the resulting audio path would look like this:

[Squeezelite]->[(RPi)pre-amp]->[amplifier]->[speakers]

In such a case, the proper setting for the player Volume Control would
be, “Volume controls adjust outputs”, i.e., the signal level sent to the
[amplifier] would be controlled by the [(RPi)pre-amp] part of the audio
path. There's one more thing to understand; the volume is (in this case)
controlled in analog domain, i.e., the DAC (digital to analog converter)
in the RPi converts the signal from digital domain to analog, and then
passes the analog output to the pre-amp for control.

Another variant of the above to consider is when the RPi is plugged into
a receiver type of device, i.e., an integrated device that combines
both, a pre-amp, and an amplifier. In this case the audio path would
look like this:

Squeezelite->[(RPi)pre-amp]->[(receiver)pre-amp->(receiver)amp]->speakers

In such a case, the proper setting for the player Volume Control would
be, “Output Level is fixed at 100%”, i.e., the signal level sent to the
[(receiver)amplifier] would be controlled by the [(receiver)pre-amp],
and not by the [(RPi)pre-amp]. The “Output Level is fixed at 100%”
setting really means *bypass* the [(RPi)pre-amp] part of the audio path,
and what that ultimately means, is that the signal from the DAC is
passed directly to the [(receiver)pre-amp], which then regulates the
signal level that is then passed to the [(receiver)amplifier].

The audio path in the above examples is all in the analog domain after
the initial conversion from digital in the RPi’s DAC, but even there,
having two low-level devices (pre-amps) affecting the signal is not
desirable because of the accumulation of noise. Things get really bad
fast should the RPis in the above examples be connected through a
digital interface to a receiver AND the setting for the Volume Control
be set to “Volume controls adjust outputs”. Since controlling volume
happens in the analog domain, the signal would be first converted into
analog in the RPi’s DAC, then volume is adjusted in the [(RPi)pre-amp],
THEN re-digitized for transport to the [receiver], which then converts
that digital signal into analog again before the final amplification
stage. Now in addition to two pre-amps in the signal path, there would
be accumulation of digital conversion artifacts, and that's very
undesireundesirable.

So, suggestions:

1 – To clarify the functional meaning of the player Volume Control
setting, rename the options for its dropdown;
a) from “Volume controls adjust outputs” to “is by Player”
b) from “Output Level is fixed at 100%” to “is by Receiver”,

or something to that effect, and

2 – MS should not second guess how, and which of the down-stream devices
choose to respond to volume commands. It’s simply not for it to know, or
be concerned about.

Change your configuration to run on port 9002 instead. 9000 sometimes is

Tap the name of the current player or the icon at top left. "Manage

players.

Great!!

One question / feature request:
When using Material Skin (or some other Apps like OrangeSqueeze):
If I I select a std. Podcast (i.e. not through your App) - for example:
https://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/podcast-hoerspiel.3655.de.podcast
and then I select an episode, click on the 3-dot menue and select the
'more' entry - I get a synopsis and the duration of that podcast.
I.e. "Beschreibung: Er ist der Sheriff von Raufarhöfn. Er hat alles im
Griff.

-> Would it be possible, that your Plugin provides the same information
under 'more' - similarly to aboves material skins treatment of that
Podcast 'more' entry?
(Right now, for the podcast in aboves example, I get in your App:
"Titel: Kalmann | Skurriler Island-Krimi

When I add an album, play now or queue, from either "Album Artist" or
"All Artist" the tracks are added in a complete random order. If I add
an album from "Album" all tracks are added in the right order. This
doesn't happen if I use the LMS webb interface or the Android app
"Squeezer".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take care!

'Examples' section (that has examples with 'foo', 'bar', 'buzz') Does
that also show the issue? Material uses the vuetify.js framework, and
this page is its docs/example page for selects.

Best is to install https://f-droid.org/ and then use that package
manager to install Material (search for LMS). F-droid is a collection of
open-source apps for Android, using this you will be notified of any
updates.

Hi Craig,

This is really a kind off odd. With Android 8 and Chrome 89.0.4.4389.105
it does not work at all on two different phones - even if I clear
Program Data/ Cache it changes nothing. With Android 11 on a Pixel 4a
and Chrome 89.0.4.4389.105 it works w/o any problems. Using Adblock
Browser 2.7.0./ Chromium 88.0.4324.181 on the other both Android 8
phones it works, too. Btw. just updated to Material 2.3.6

A silly question - from where and how do I use the Material Android
APK?

Regards
Michael

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] LmsUpdate and LmsRepack - Synology 8.0.* packages

2021-03-28 Thread botogol

I have a DS214se

To roll back PERL it made me first uninstall LMS, so I have
- uninstalled LMS
- uninstalled PERL
- installed old version of PERL (and turned off auto-updates)
- installed pinkdot's last version of LMS.

That worked fine - LMS now running.

BUT now my squeezebox touch is complaining that I don't have the latest
version of LMS

Can I roll back my touch ?

I have removed any older version of the LMS but to no avail. The docker
version still refuses to start without crashing with the same message:

I saw earlier post with a similar error but I could not find their

Turns out that planetradio mislabels their streams and I am using the
same streams that you linked to.
For example
JazzFM - labelled as adtshq48 but what is really streaming is 128k - and
it is using the same URL as listed on astra2sat site.
If you want to experiment then simply remove the filter in the settings
page and then browse the stations and experiment.

I understand that there are some 192k streams somewhere ... try
radiofeeds to see if they are there.

I really don’t know then. The error happens at the very beginning. The
Perl plugin, upon play request from an AirPlay controller, creates a
listening port, launches an instance of the binary helper and tells that
instance ‘call me back on this port’. It’s a localhost port and the
error is that the helper cannot open a socket to that port (and this is
the first thing it does).

Thanks for the quick response. LMS is running on Ubuntu 20.04. ufw on
this machine was set to inactive for testing.

The reason the list does not disappear after selecting an item is
because it is not a menu - it stays open so you can select multiple
items. To close it click anywhere else in Material, e.g. click the text
asking you to select players.

I don't have may players, but have created 8 fake LMS players (via
squeezelite), and I can close this list by clicking elsewhere - with the
Material APK and Chrome on Android.

*Material debug:* 1. Launch via http: //SERVER:9000/material/?debug=json
(Use http: //SERVER:9000/material/?debug=json,cometd to also see update
messages, e.g. play queue) 2. Open browser's developer tools 3. Open
console tab in developer tools 4. REQ/RESP messages sent to/from LMS
will be logged here.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce Planet Radio / Bauer Media plugin - PlanetRock, Absolute, Kiss, Scala ++

2021-03-28 Thread Paul Webster

This plugin is for track (cover art, artist, title) and programme
(picture, title, synopsis) for Bauer Media (UK) stations (for example:
Planet Rock, Absolute, Kiss, Jazz FM, Scala, Kerrang!, Magic, Greatest
Hits, Country Hits and some local radio stations (e.g. Clyde, Cool,
Pirate).
This includes the various related stations in brands such as Absolute
80s, Kisstory,
LMS (via TuneIn) already provides track title and artist for some of the
stations - but without cover art and no programme details.

You can choose whether the staion or programme logo/art should be
displayed when there is no track image available.

I have seen that the track information transitions are a bit out of sync
with live playing - but to a varying degree across different stations
and at different times.
They do provide an offset to use but it does not seem to be correct.
Overall, it is close enough to be useable.

If you find that track information is not showing then first check their
web site at https://www.planetradio.co.uk and see if it is there.
(click on the top left to get a drop down list)

If the track information is not there then it is probably why the plugin
is not showing it.

The station list should appear under Radio in LMS (although you can
configured it to be under Apps/My Apps or not show it at all).
The list is ordered with most of the big name stations at the top and
the rest are sorted alphabetically below.
Some of the stations are in fact a brand name that has others below -
for example Absolute and Kiss.

PlanetRadio usually provide multiple streaming links for each station.
This would require deep navigation of the station list to select one to
play so you can provide a set of preferred stream types (the stream type
appears in brackets after the station name when do navigate down through
the list).
If one of your preferred types is available then all of the other are
supressed which then makes it playable directly from the first
presentation of the station.
The default value for this field is mp3hq112 (mp3 stream at 112kbps).

If you find that some of the streams do not play then try installing the
PlayHLS plugin.

If you use the RadioFeeds plugin then you may well be able to access
higher bit rate streams.

This (planetradio) plugin will provide the artist/track/programme
information even if the station is selected via TuneIn, Radio.Net or
Radiofeeds.

Thanks to the beta testers for their encouragement and input during the
development - bluetdi, chill, Heuer, local.bin, cpd73 and vinnelio

thread as closed but it might answer a question if you have one)

I will investigate the provision listen again links - but it does look
like this will need the user to have an account on the planetradio.co.uk
site.
