Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] squeezecast questions

2010-12-15 Thread maggior

I posted the question to the support forum for squeezecast and the
devloper responded with this:

Squeezecast process these natively. Should be gapless, it just plays
what the server is sending.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] squeezecast questions

2010-12-10 Thread maggior

Thanks, that makes sense. Sounds like it's not an easy problem to solve
unless iOS is changed - or squeezecast is rolled into something like
iPeng.

I'm deducing that FLAC is being played natively - I have no way of know
for certain. My server is not set to transcode for the player, so that
rules that out. That leaves trascoding on the iPod by squeezecast.
It's possible, but if it is capable of trascoding to mp3, why not
decode it and play the lossless data?

Also, the playback is perfectly gapless. Any FLAC-mp3 transcoding
setups that I've used (including squeezecenter) introduce gaps.

If the squeezecast developer is reading this, perhaps they can confirm
this.

Nobody knows?

I'll probably just download it myself this weekend and check it out for
myself. Even if it doesn't work for me, I'll look upon it as a donation
to help fund future developement :-).

Thanks. I'll check it out this weekend and post my findings here. If
squeezecast becomes more widely used, I'm sure this question will come
up again.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] squeezecast questions

2010-12-09 Thread maggior

I downloaded and installed the app tonight. It was easy to setup and
connected to my server very easily. I verified that it does play FLAC
natively and gaplessly!! I'm very happy with the app. There is
obviously still some work to be done, but in general it works well!!

Once it is streaming, it's stable. I found I had to start it playing
from within the squeezecast app and then take over control via iPeng,
otherwise the connection with the server would be lost. Not a big deal
once you understand that. Once the stream is going, I can switch albums
very easily. Pausing and resuming playback seems to loose the server
connection too.

What really impressed me was that while squeezecast was playing, it
didn't skip a beat as I checked my email, facebook, and surfed the
internet with safari.

I look froward to future updates to this app.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] squeezecast questions

2010-12-09 Thread bluegaspode

Apps that Play music in the background get suspended by iOS as soon as
they stop playing audio.
That is the problem Squeezecast is having right now.

How did you check that FLAC play natively and are not transcoded on the
fly to something else?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] squeezecast questions

2010-12-07 Thread maggior

I have iPeng on my iPod Touch and I am considering getting squeezecast.
I have a couple of questions before I purchase:
- Does it support FLAC natively?
- Does it support gapless playback of FLAC and LAME mp3?

Thanks,
