I suppose there is the 2.0 USB limit that is about half of Gigabit, but are

You probably want to check your switch has Gigabit ports first.

It's definitely worth it for servers.
Remember the problem I had a week ago with Windows 2008 backup?

I hadn't put the new backup procedure in place so temporarily backed
up the files over the network.
It was *faster* than reading from the local hard drive. I had
forgotten the 2 servers shared a gigabyte connection.

So it's going to stay that way.

Theoretically, the max performance should be about 480 megabits. In actuality,
is the USB adapter better than 100 megabits?

Re: [NF] Anybody using USB Gigabit ethernet adapters?

2008-10-02 Thread mike
Well that sounds very ironic due to the fact that max usb 2.0 is limited to 480
mb/s like you mentioned. That means that your max throughput is cut in half for
technology that is only adopted right now by those that need high throughput.
Such as gamers or for backup purposes. I would suggest that if you want gigabit
to find space in a pci slot which will allow you to get the full throughput
speed. Just make sure that all the hardware devices that the data has to go
through, I.E. Router, bridge, switches, hardware firewall has gigabit ports
otherwise you will be limited by the slowest device.

The office I'm thinking of converting to gigabit has all new computers, so they
already have gigabit cards in them. There are a few computers with 100 megabit
cards, and a few notebooks with 100 megabit cards. I'm thinking of using the
USB adapters only for the laptops and get some inexpensive gigabit cards for
the other computers.

Right now I'm not sure the expense is worth it for any of this. The only slow
throughput we have is when reindexing databases or running some SQL selects
from the NAS which we are using as the data server now. The reindexing is only
for emergencies and the SQL selects are only for month-end processing.
