The plot thickens. I tweaked my data set so that the one page group at the beginning went away, and I allocated those records to a group in the middle of the data set. That group now runs to 3 pages but the _pagetotal system var still shows 2 so I get the mathematically incorrect Page 3 of 2 for that group. So I'm guessing I can't really do this if I want to rely on _pageno and _pagetotal...
