[libreoffice-projects] LibreOffice Conference 2014 Call for location

2013-10-17 Thread Sophie
Hello,
Once a year, the LibreOffice Community hosts its annual, global
community event, the LibreOffice Conference. After a successful Paris
event in October 2011, in Berlin in October 2012, and just shortly after
the great 2013 Milano Conference, the venue for the upcoming year 2014
will be voted on by the community. Traditionally, the LibreOffice
Conference takes place between September and November, with a preferred
date of October.
The deadline for sending in your proposal is Sunday, December 29th 2013,
23:59 UTC.
After receiving the applications, we will evaluate necessary
preconditions, evaluate the validity and give applicants the chance to
clarify vague details. In January, the LibreOffice community will vote
on their preferred location, so the organizers have enough time for
their preparations. Please do not vote on random locations but rather
wait for the official announcement of the proposals and the voting
mechanism.
For details on the requirements, and the process, please refer to the
wiki page on
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/CallforLocation

Again, the deadline is Sunday, December 29th 2013, 23:59 UTC.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN HOSTING THE LIBREOFFICE CONFERENCE!

Kind regards
Sophie

It would be nice to get a clean final version.

I guess the clean final version is on LimeSurvey which is a great tool

And by the way, I'm interested too to have an account on LimeSurvey and

I am sure that a good number of LibreItalia G+ members will answer the

[libreoffice-projects] General release organization meeting

2013-11-19 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

In order to try to have the best organization for the release of 4.2.0
that will happen in February, I would like to organize a meeting between
all the projects concerned to make sure we don't forget anything or miss
some deadlines and coordinate well together.
It would be good to have this meeting during RC1 period (16 to 22 of
December) so we have still some time left before the final release. I've
set a Doodle here :

http://doodle.com/sqkyaaeb5aaigarq

We will use the marketing channel on IRC and it would be really great if
we could have people representative from :
- design team
- marketing team
- QA team
- localization team
- native language team and members who administrate website in their
language
- developer team
- documentation team, I'm not sure this team is really concerned but
feel free to join :)

If I miss somebody don't hesitate to tell me :) And please follow up the
discussion on the *marketing list*.

I will provide an agenda of the meeting on the wiki next week, where
you'll be able to add the points you want us to discuss. I would like to
keep it short for all teams and we will do another meeting if one team
feels it's necessary.

Thanks all in advance for your participation!
Kind regards
Sophie

give to many details (it's a report :) but draw the main lines of what
your project has achieved.

Thank you very much in advance for your participation, it's an important
task for our project.
Aside the official report, we can use it also to present our project to
the various publics we meet.

If you have question, please follow up on the projects list.

[libreoffice-projects] Manual tests for 4.2.0 RC1

2013-12-11 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

The 4.2.0 RC1 version is due soon now and we would like to invite you to
test it as this is the first release candidate.
I've set a test environment on our Moztrap site, see here:
http://manual-test.libreoffice.org/results/runs/?

Those tests are very simple and have a step by step description with the
expected results for each step. It takes a little time, but, hey, we
want a strong version :) Plus you don't need to run the whole tests in
one session, you can come back later.

For more information on how to participate to those tests, please see
the wiki pages here :
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/MozTrap/User_Guide
and don't hesitate to ask on the QA list or directly to me if you need
any help.

Christian will inform you when the release candidate is available, but
in the meantime don't hesitate to take a tour on Moztrap. I will send a
mail to the users@ and projects@ list too.

Thanks in advance for your participation, it is highly appreciated and
will help a lot to provide a thoroughly tested version to our users.

Kind regards

[libreoffice-projects] Manual tests on RC1

2013-12-20 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

A new test run is available on Moztrap to test the RC1 version of 4.2.0.
Concerning Moztrap, there is 47 tests to run, there is no obligation to
run them all, you can choose your favorite module and run only those, or
only those tagged P1. You can abandon the tests and come back later to
finish them.
Concerning the RC1 version, RC means release candidate, so this version
will install as a normal version replacing your existing one. So be
careful to save your profile before installing it.

You can download the version from here
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/pre-releases/
More information on how-to use Moztrap here
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/MozTrap/User_Guide

If you have any question, don't hesitate to ask on the QA list, or
directly to me or the QA irc channel.

Thanks a lot in advance to all who participate, this will really help.

Kind regards

Thanks for reviving this :) I would like to have a planet like this one:

You can filter it by language (what I don't like are the flags, you know
why :), but also you are able to display all languages. Even if you

I personally feel strongly _against_ such a solution, as having a
zillion of languages mixed in the current planet setup will cause
nothing but confusion. However, this is just my personal take on that,
so - if there are no objections from the community, I won't vetoe.

If you can filter the language you want to read and keep that filter
set, I don't see what is disturbing here. You'll see only German, or
only Spanish if you want. For me I prefer to see German and Spanish, so
we will be both happy :)

Of course, I assume that we would still need one maintainer per

Yes, that would help to judge the blog's content, indeed.

no. The current Planet does not support filtering at all. It
 would be
 one
large stream, with all languages combined, just as if I wrote my

sentence in German, one in French, one in English. Again,
filtering is _not_ available in the current Planet setup.

These regression tests are simple, with step by step explanations and

allows a follow up on previous regressions and an easy check for the
localization.

Thanks a lot to all previous and future participants !

 Hi all,

So thanks to the big great work of Christian, NL sites are now almost
ready to be localized. I'll write a how-to today on the wiki, but here
 are some info:

 - the changing strings are ready to be translated and the sites
populated with a copy of the main one
 - the template strings are not yet in Pootle, Christian will work on the
extraction/import this week and will update Pootle. We will keep you
 update on this
 - you can begin to work on your language site however
 - you login with the same login you used by the past to
https://www.libreoffice.org/admin and from here switch to your subsite.
 - editors have also publishers rights

I'll work today on the how-to and will add screenshots to make it
easier. If you feel you don't need it, just go on :) the site will not
be visible for the moment, so don't be too afraid, Christian will switch
 it on when finalized.

[libreoffice-projects] Annual report, call for help on translation

2014-05-01 Thread Sophie
Hi all,
I would like to request your help for translating the annual report of
the Foundation. Florian has had to write it in German for the German
authorities and won't find the time to translate it in English.

But we would like to have it available for the overall community as a
nice document to show the world all what we've done last year and the
great community we are.

So if you can read German and can write English, feel proud, you're the
most wanted person of the LibreOffice project ;-)
We will split the report by chapter and upload each on the wiki and
manage the workflow here.

If you wish to participate, just reply to this mail or write to me
directly, it would be great if we could begin the work soon and the more
we are, the better.

Thanks a lot in advance for your participation, we were not able to
achieve that last year and we really would like to be able to do it this
year thanks to your help.

Cheers

[libreoffice-projects] Big Thank You page

2014-06-24 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

We would like to draw a 'big thank you' page with the names of the
people who are contributing in the native language projects but don't
show up in any of our listing.
Could you help us to put this list in place and help to maintain it?

I've open the page here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Contributors
I've added a FR example (the most simple for me ;-) so don't hesitate to
add your NLP names or send me the info to be added, I'll take care of it.

When it will be filled, we would like to attach it to the next PR to
send a strong message to the media and put the projector on our NLP
contributors :)
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Let me know if you have any question or remark.

Cheers

 Hi Sophie

Do you think the names (or page) should have a time stamp (e.g. 2014)?
People come and go quite often...

Yes, that's a good idea. And may be we could set a 'cleaning period'
once a year, where each project remove and add the names ?

 How about a photo?

I want to keep this page and contributions to it very simple, so if the
NLP wants to link to a page where there is photos of their team no
problem for me, but I would prefer not on this page :)

Thanks for your feedback (and don't forget to contribute to the page ;-)

I thought on Big Thank You 2014, Big Thank You 2015

That way we keep an history of the community participation. But YMMV.

Would this list not be better suited for the Credits section of
LibreOffice? At least this would make it easier for nl groups to look up
names and you could still use it for as basis for PR work.

For the moment, the difficulty is to collect the names, once we have a
list, it could be linked from anywhere. As you know, we have very few
feedback from this small NLPs, they have already so much to do.

The same could be done for the larger groups who contribute to the
LibreOffice project: Docs; QA; Design; Website; Accessibility; Marketing.

I guess they are also in NLPs :)

If these lists were maintained in the Credits section, we could still
 pull data for marketing purposes.

It's more difficult to update Silverstripe than updating the wiki, so
let have it on the wiki..

Also, IMO, this discussion should really be sent to the Marketing list
 as we are discussing PR.

For the moment we are speaking about recognition of the work done by and
inside the NLPs, we really want to thank those contributors for the
great work they do on a day to day basis. We don't want to do that only
on a PR, this is a follow up, we want to have a page where each can
point to and show our contributors.

Cheers
Sophie

[libreoffice-projects] Re: LibreOffice contributors on a map

2014-07-01 Thread Sophie
Hi Florian, Robert,

 Hi,

We at the de-discuss list thought it would be a good idea to have
everyone contributing to LibO on one map, filterable by skills etc.

= Do you like the idea?

Thanks for posting here and as you know I like it very much :)

I do not want any discussion about Open Source vs Closed source or NSA
vs German Server or, which is likely more important, Google Maps vs OSM
Nevertheless I will refer to the solutions created by Robert G. and
 myself as OSM and GMaps

 OSM: http://robert.familiegrosskopf.de/map/map.html
GMaps: http://florei-libo.115.at/DE/map/ [The ads are, because it is a
 free web server]

As my solution is the GMaps solution I will point out the positive
things of this solution and the negative things of OSM:
 == GMaps ==
 +Easy to use API
 +Looks clean
+Good look and feel on tablets
+Can use name and city as location (Hamburg, Deutschland) [Also local
 names as you see here]
 == OSM ==
 -No gestures on tablets
-Need to search for the coordinates somewhere
[Cannot tell about the API, as I did the other]

= Please comment here for other advantages or disadvantages, please
make sure to have a llook at it on a tablet as this is the big downsiode
 of OSM IMHO

= Please comment which skills we should list

all the skills represented in the projects Dev, QA, l10n, Infra,
Website, Doc, Marketing, Support and whatever I forget

= Should we list the different languages

no, as we are showing countries, we should avoid pointing languages.

 There are three use-cases:
 1) Display the UI for the user
 2) Add data to MySQL table
 3) Make sure data is up-to-date

If we do GMaps, I will do the best for the UI part, but I need help to
set up a JS-array from a MySQL-table... If we do OSM, I likely won't do

[libreoffice-projects] Annual report 2014

2014-07-07 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

As last year, we are collecting the achievements of the project during
the year to send to the Berlin authorities, but also to serve as a
report for the community.

The pad is available here:
http://pad.documentfoundation.org/p/annualreport

Please, fill what you (or your team) have done the last 6 months. Don't
hesitate to add links to photos or blog posts. Write only in English and
don't be shy about your typos :)

Thanks a lot in advance for your participation, it's important and a
pleasure for all us to know what is happening in each part of our project!

Let me know if you have any question (please, don't do a reply to all).

Cheers
Sophie

[libreoffice-projects] Migrating to the new website design

2014-07-07 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

We would like to encourage all the NL teams to migrate to the new
website design (which is not so new now ;).

Note that you don't need to have all the pages available like on the
English version, if you just want to have the download page, unpublish
what has been copied but this page and you're done.

If you need guidance, there is a documentation available here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/NewWebsiteNLT
and don't hesitate to ask if you have questions :)

slides/videos from the LibreOffice conference for LOWN 5.

If you get involved at the conference and had a talk there, please
provide your slides on your blog (if you have any) or any social

As a reminder, if you have suggestions of topics non mentioned in

Some things on top of my mind:
- - MC elections
- - certification
- - Android tender
- - infra migration

LOWN basically consists in writing a summary which could be
reused: * for the annual report The Document Foundation has to
 provide to German authorities,

the pad will be mostly used for that, so don't hesitate to add your
own infos on it, collecting all in one place is easier for the report

 * by the marketing team; * and also by IT news like NextInpact,
Phoronix, etc if they want to cover LibreOffice development.

[libreoffice-projects] Re: Workflow between dev, UX and l10n teams

2015-01-26 Thread Sophie

different quote styles I don't even have on my keyboard) and anything
similliar - NOT OK if you don't script it for all languages
Cosmetic changes (Big brown fox - Big Brown Fox) - NOT OK at all,
change just for en_us, don't change my strings and don't even notify me
 you did it in en_us

 I see 2 problems here:

 1) There is no tool that would detect these trivial changes, and would
act accordingly.

 2) The texts for translations are updated in big 'code' drops, without
possibility for translators to affect the process in any way - for
them it is too late.

Regarding 1) - I thought that Pootle is detecting the trivial changes
some way, and offering the original translation. Is it not? What can
be done to improve that, so that for translators it is just a matter of
checking; not a matter of translating? [Or even what you suggest - that
it would just update the source strings without touching the
 translations?]

Pootle will show you a modified string, even if it doesn't affect your
translation you will have to validate the string again to have it on a
translated state. Also we don't all work on Pootle, several of us are
working off line and Pootle is only a repository for our files.

That's why we were thinking of a en_US version as a real language and
different from the sources and also about scripting changes when
possible (like the substitution of ~ by _)

Regarding 2) - I'm glad that you say that the strings will be now
getting to Pootle immediately after the code / string changes in master.
I think it is important that the translators will be able to deal with
the changes immediately, not several months later, so that they can
 cooperate, and not only react.

yes, that's much better, even if we have to be cautious about the workflow.

In general, I don't think that setting extremely strict rules works,
unless you have means how to enforce them - like via a commit hook or so
(and it is extremely unpopular way to do things).

It is always much better to communicate - if you see a developer who
commits a change that causes you grief, please _do_ tell _him/her_
immediately, and - if possible - in a friendly way. I'm sure he/she
will do much better the next time.

Translators are for most of them non technical people and will not see a
commit, but only the result on Pootle, sometimes months later. In the
same way the developer who is doing tons of changes for en_US is invited
to discuss them with the l10n team :)

Unfortunately I did not see any signs of notice that this or that change
was problematic for localization on the development mailing list - were
there such warnings there? Like commit XY caused AB - please don't do
such things, unless we agree how to do that effectively / without pain?
Or was it impossible so far because the strings in Pootle were not
 synced with master?

Yes, I think it was too late and when the l10n team is at work, it's the
rush i.e RC time for developers, so not the best period to discuss hot
topics ;) That's why I've waited to open this discussion.
Also, even if I've discussed as much as possible about l10n on issues
concerning UI changes, it's a lot of work to follow each commit that
could have an effect. Sharing the effort between developers/UX/l10n
teams should be possible. As we follow Gnome HIG, adding it as
pre-requisite for UI changes/adds may prevent to have to rewrite dialogs
for example.

Also - should we have a 'Localization' recurring topic in the ESC? Who
would be the right representative there, please?

Maybe not as a recurring topic, but something that should be in mind of
UX team and developers when they commit or check for commits that have a
huge impact on l10n.

Cheers

Pity that it was not brought to the ESC as a problem...

It was brought on the dev list, but when the l10n team discovered it, it

[libreoffice-projects] Workflow between dev, UX and l10n teams

2015-01-19 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

[Please follow-up the discussion on projects@ list to keep the history
of the thread there and ease the discussion, thanks :-)]

I would like to open a discussion about the way developers team, UX team
and l10n team should interact and work together.

There has been a heavy discussion [see this thread 1] during this round
of translation. The l10n team was a bit frustrated that there were again
so many changes in the en_US version that does not concern the l10n
versions (like adding colon at the end or capitals in the middle of the
strings).

Each time, it seems part of this could be automated or a reflection
on how to avoid messing the l10n work should have been introduced before
those changes are committed. For example, if I decide to change FR
localization to have sentence capitalization in the menu entries, none
of the 100 other localizations won't and shouldn't be affected. It
should be the same for en_US version or if really impossible, try to
find a solution that lower the impact on all localizations.

None of the l10n teams is against changing or correcting the UI of the
en_US version and none is against the natural evolution of the suite.
What is not bearable is when you have 100 000 changes in en_US and only
a 1/3 concerns all the other languages and it is repeated over the
branches.

We are trying to change our workflow to work on master instead of
branches. That will allow us to review the strings earlier (to leverage
heavy unneeded changes if possible) and have more time to localize. But
that will work only if each taking part of the changes take care of the
others.

To conclude, what l10n team would like to see is:
- a review process of the strings before they are committed and make
sure they respect the en_US standards (capitals, grammar, punctuation,
typography). Maybe adding the Gnome HIG book to our pages [like 2] if
not already.

- if there is a way to script changes, script them otherwise wait until
there is a script available to commit them

- any time there are heavy changes that pop up in someone's mind (like
changing ... for …) discuss it with the l10n team before committing
those changes.

I know it may lower the enthusiasm of some contributors, but it will
regain the one of our l10n teams for sure :)

[libreoffice-projects] NLPs/ L10n meeting during LibOCon

2015-02-23 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

You know that the next LibreOffice conference will be in Aarhus in
Denmark from 23rd to 25th September. For first information see here
http://conference.libreoffice.org/

There is also what we call an 'internal day' on the 22nd dedicated to
team meetings.
I would very much like that we have a meeting between NLP teams this
year. I already sent this call to the l10n teams too. There is no better
way to solve and push things than gathering together. So please book the
date in your agenda!
TDF can help your for travel/accommodation refunds.

What I'm thinking about is:
- various l10n topics like the new Pootle version, KeyID installation,
strings search, help files,etc.
- guide translation via OmegaT/GitHub
- QA with MozTrap (hopefully localized)
- Handling PR translation together with Italo,
- Conference cases
- Marketing and conferences around the world
- your topic :)

Let me know if you are willing to come at the conference, then we will
be able to organize our time together at best.
Cheers

Google OpenId is going to turn off by April 20...
A very large portion of hte gerrit users have google are their sole
openid provider linked to their account.
You need to link one or more other OpenId provider to your existing
account. See:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/GoogleOpenID

If you fail to do so by April 20th, then you will not be able to
log-in your current gerrit account.

What is your proposal exactly, Florian :) ?
Have a translation done by TDF for several languages and send it to .. ?
And send the English version to .. ?

I think it should not be so difficult to produce a table with a list of
NLPs and their contacts at TDF, in order to know in advance which NLPs
will be updated regularly and those who will not be updated about TDF
 activities.

Once we have the table, we know which NLP will be informed about TDF in
order to decide what to do with the others. As English is not the best
option in some cases, we can send a short message in English, French and
 Spanish.

The table is already available here with there contacts, I try to have
it maintained up to date by the teams:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Language_Teams

To better manage the flow, we can decide that this multi-lingual message
will be sent once a month, with a summary of all the messages (it could
be the BoD newsletter we have started in June, translated in two
additional languages from the July issue).

For the distribution, we can use phpList, the same tool we use for the
distribution of press releases since last March.

so maybe adding the discuss@ list of the NLP to phplist would be a good
idea. We provide the message on the discuss@list in English and one list
member translate it. I don't see mailing personally as effective as
posting on a list, if the person you mail to is not active at the
moment, everybody miss the message.

[libreoffice-projects] Reporting to Native Lang Projects lists

2015-07-07 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

It seems our communication in direction of the Native Language Projects
should be enhanced. Some members reported that they were not aware of
new versions or events happening in the project like Bug Hunting
Sessions or General Release meeting.
So, could you report major things like BH sessions, or special events to
your discussion lists? it would allow more participations and a better
communication between the different projects.
What in your opinion could be done to ease the communication flow
between international project and Native Language Projects?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

 Hi Sophie,

perhaps it might be useful, to send automatically things like BH
sessions to the national discuss-ML also - of course this in english
(nobody has time to translate such a mail).

I would prefer that each NL project feels entitled to forward the mail
than one sending the mail to each NL list. It's already sent to lists,
blogs, social medias. For me the workflow should be:
we send to projects@list then fwd to the NL list done by one of its member.

[libreoffice-projects] Program Committee for LibOCon

2016-02-10 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

First of all, I would like to thank all the people who have volunteered
to be part of the Program Committee, it's really great to see your
enthusiasm :-)
We only need a small set of persons for this committee so I took the
first four persons who volunteered (Thorsten, Kendy, Marina, Italo),
with me as a fall back, 5 members are enough for the task.
Thanks again, there will be another program committee next year, so
don't feel sad and keep your wonderful enthusiasm if you are not part of
it this year!

these are the months during which we set the program.

Fwd: [libreoffice-projects] 2016 budget proposals

2016-02-25 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

I would like to remind you about the budget proposal Florian has made
some time ago, the deadline is approaching, so please don't miss it :)
Cheers
Sophie

 Message transféré
Sujet : [libreoffice-projects] 2016 budget proposals
Date : Wed, 10 Feb 2016 18:04:38 +0100
De : Florian Effenberger <flo...@documentfoundation.org>
Organisation : The Document Foundation
Pour : projects@global.libreoffice.org

Dear community,

the year 2015 is over, and we have achieved a lot of exciting things,
thanks to your amazing work, dedication, passion and support - thank you
so much for being part of our community and working with us on the joint
goal of fostering LibreOffice!

In order to support the community even better, we would like to create a
better budgetting process, have a concrete plan for 2016 already now,
with a few "pools" or "buckets" defined, ideally:

1. community events (aimed at getting face-time for community contributors)
2. infrastructure (e.g. compute power/hardware/storage, cloud, VMs),
3. marketing (aimed at representing the project to the outside world)
4. other (anything that does not fit into the above)

The idea is to have a good plan for 2016 already now, while keeping the
administrative overhead low, and have two authorizers (one of them being
a board member or deputy, the other one from the wider community)
responsible for each budget, which means getting receipts, approving and
tracking expenses, and clarifying questions with Florian or Sophie.

To get a better understanding of your needs, we ask you to send us your
budget requests within *three weeks* from this e-mail, i.e. by
2016-03-02 to flo...@documentfoundation.org

While I monitor some of the lists, please always send your
proposals/requests *directly* to me so they are not lost!

Please let us know your requests for funds *alongside* some items you
envision to be paid from these funds. The items are not binding, the
spending in the end is the responsibility of the authorizers, but some
examples help the board in getting a better understanding of the funds
required to best match your needs. If possible, please also mention the
amount of travel costs associated. We'll factor in some margin, but
concrete numbers and ideas are very much welcome to have a plan for 2016.

As a sample, a request could look like this:

##
We'd like to request a 2016 budget of
1000 € for community events
500 € for infrastructure
1500 € for marketing

Expenses we envision are
1. marketing: attendance at XYZ trade show to show LibreOffice to ABC
user group (700 € booth costs, 300 € for collaterals and 500 € of
travel, totalling to 1500 €),
2. community: a community weekend to discuss tasks and ideas (600 €
hotel, 100 € for snacks and 300 € travel, totalling to 1000 €),
3. infrastructure: dedicated server to QA localized versions (500 €)
##

Alongside that, we will also provide some mechanism in Redmine for
approvals and tracking of expenses, and will follow-up with details on
this later on.

Thanks again for all your work, and looking forward to your proposals!

Florian

[libreoffice-projects] Take the opportunity to award a community member!

2016-05-12 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

Maybe you have seen that there is currently a campaign to award each
other with barnstars on the wiki here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Barnstars/2016-05

We currently have very few awards on this page but I'm sure there is
somebody you want to thank for some help or some work he/she has done in
your area or in your team.
So don't be shy, a 'thank you', whatever the form, is always something
we are happy to receive :)
Thanks a lot in advance for your participation!

Sorry for the delay, I just wanted to share the FR experience here, the
dictionary and grammar tools are developed by Olivier using community
feedback (for several open source projects) here:
http://www.dicollecte.org/
On the dicollecte site, it's possible to add a word, edit an entry and
delete what is not necessary or submit an error. The technical part is
developed by Olivier and core contributors review the submissions.
Submissions currently reviewed are visible here for example:
http://www.dicollecte.org/propositions.php?prj=fr=E
and the discussion about a word:
http://www.dicollecte.org/proposition.php?prj=fr=28588
Let me know if you would like some technical feedbacks on the platform,
workflow, scripts, and so on (not sure what would be interesting, I've
absolutely no skills here), I'll ping Olivier then (he is quite buzzy ;)
Cheers

[libreoffice-projects] Program Committee of the LibreOffice Conference 2019

2019-02-13 Thread Sophie
Hi all,

Like each year, we need a program committee to frame the tracks and vote
on the papers for the LibreOffice conference.

The committee will have to decide on the main topics of the conference,
then read and decide on the talk proposals and set the program for the
three days of conference together with the local team. This will be done
during July and August.

If you want to be part of the committee just answer here or send me a
mail, be aware however that a high availability will be requested
*during July and August*. We will need no more than 5 persons.

Thanks in advance,

Hello *,

here it is an idea of mine I've started to discuss with Sophie:

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss@documentfoundation.org/msg06252.html

It's still in a very raw and theoretical form and it likely has to be
refined a lot.

The main purpose of such a proposal is to increase efficiency in
managing help requests and contributions, both casual and core ones.

While I was thinking about it a little more, I've already found 3 more
critical points:

1) appreciation of the proposal by and its utility for developers. They
already have bugzilla;

2) manageability of such a system by the maintainers and contributors of
the projects. They have, like everybody else, few free time and the
addition of another system and its maintenance may reduce that
available time. A huge automation of the system is absolutely needed;

3) native languages projects/tasks may create barriers in a management
system of this kind without the key effort of few local coordinators,
usually the same maintainers and core contributors of the NL projects
who are already overloaded with work.

My main concern, even before the technical implementation of this
proposal, it's not to create more and unwanted overload for the
*current* contributors.

So that could be a task for somebody who has recurrent time slots
available to [partly] manage the tasks planning. If the tool really
provide efficiency in time management, we should be able to avoid
harassing volunteers already overwhelmed.

Kind regards
Sophie

OK, no problem.

So let's refine what we were discussing so far. BTW, is there already
any official or unofficial draft document that can be used for proposal
like this, so that there is a homogeneous approval/rejection process for
project proposals?

No, I don't think so.

Then:

I think we are now agreeing that such central system has to be a wiki
with a simplified template for direct access of the open tasks of the
different projects. See below other thoughts of mine about different
topics below.

Yes

*About coordinators*

I think, but I may be wrong, that if we force developers directly to
post their requests for help in a wiki, and waste coding time, they
may find that central system just useless and a duplication of bugzilla.

There is already such a posting on the wiki for the easy hacks things:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Easy_Hacks

So, I'm in favor of a more important role of the coordinators. They
should actually gather the requests *and* post them in the wiki.

Yes, I think both could be handled with no difficulty

That would ease the whole work process.

In fact, the current maintainers/contributors may send a simply email or
compile a web form with their requests directed to a coordinator who,
afterwards, will post them in the wiki. No further knowledge of the wiki
(sections, tags, other formalities) would be needed for the current
maintainers/contributors.

Yes, the most difficult for a contributor would be to understand the
structure of the system, more than the syntax of the wiki

For wannabe contributors, the coordinators would be like the marketing
contacts: people who are /trait d'union/ between outside and inside
realities. Again, the coordinators may be contacted via email or web
form or other means.

Yes

However, I think it's important, after the first contact and for more
complex tasks (see classification below), to involve the new potential
contributor in the larger discussion (mailing lists or via private mail
with other developers/contributors).

/me don't like private mail :) Mailing list, to get the archive and the
information available to all is better, I think

It may build (a kind of) loyalty and not just a one time contribution.

+1

*About the granularity of classification of the requests for help*

At the beginning of this discussion there were doubts about the
manageability of a system that includes even 1-hour tasks.

After further consideration, I agree too that it would be difficult to
manage such system.

Maybe, we need less granularity. We may classify the requests in a
broader way according their difficulty and needed time to complete:
Easy, Medium, Complex.

a) Easy: basic skills needed, shortest time involved to complete them;
b) Medium: average skills needed, average time involved to complete them;
c) Complex: high level skills needed, longest time involved to complete
them.

So, the work flow in this central system should be:

1) a current maintainer/contributor contacts a coordinator via email/web
form/any-chosen-mean and sends a request for help, by providing at least:
1a) a detailed description of the task;
1b) needed skills (i.e. specific coding language);
1c) estimated complexity of the task;
1d) possible deadline for contribution;

Yes

2) the coordinator classify the request according the wiki
classification (Web Level 1: skills needed; Web Level 2: Complexity; Web
Level 3: list of tasks)

Yes

3) a wannabe contributor picks a task up in the wiki and gives
confirmation of such activity, via email/web form/modification of the
wiki/other means;

-- wiki has to be updated by the coordinator anyway

4) the coordinator, for more complex tasks or activities with a
deadline, contacts the maintainers/contributors and communicate that the
important/complex task has a new potential contributor. Automation of
this phase would be greatly appreciated;

Yes

5) the task is completed by the new contributor on his own or in
collaboration with core contributors, and everybody are happy :)

Yes, it seems :)

6) the coordinator regularly checks open, taken by new potential
contributor, tasks and verify that there has not been any mistake in
assignation or that the potential contributor has not lost interest.

I think it's harder to write it down in this email than doing it as real
process. ;)

yes, but it's very clear, you have writer skills no? ;)

BTW, I'm still puzzled from the @libreoffice.org @documentfoundation.org
and @lists.freedesktop.org division for mailing lists. It's nearly a
nightmare for a potential contributor to understand where to write and
why. :(

We could may be reduce the gap between @freedesktop and the
@libreoffice

OK.

Just let me know *exactly* where (wiki section?) I can post a
preliminary draft of the proposal and I'll try to post it there. Pay
attention: I'm not particularly expert in wiki modifications, so
mistakes are highly likely. ;)

A wiki is done to handle mistakes by design: you can always undo your
final action :)
If it's only the development of the tool, it should be placed under the
LibreOffice Wiki section I think:

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Website/LibreOfficeWiki
Later, the tool itself, if it must be visible when arriving on the wiki,
the Start page is the best to place it.

There is already such a posting on the wiki for the easy hacks things:

I see.

This page should be modified once there will be an agreement about a
wiki template, but we'll think about that if/when the community will
agree on the proposal.

yes

/me don't like private mail :) Mailing list, to get the archive and the

Well, it can be done after the creation of a ad hoc mailing list. It can
be done manually by the coordinators or automatically by the wiki
warning system for page modifications, though I don't know how flexible
that system is for our purposes.

yes, but it's very clear, you have writer skills no? ;)

I usually write SF/fantasy/horror fictions, not technical docs. :-P

oh, you can put horror or fantasy in your proposal, no problem ;)

[...]

Yes, I agree about the too much complexity, I don't like it too but I
can't do anything about it. You should send your proposal to the website
list, may be that will open the discussion about the enhancement of the
pages.

I'll surely send that proposal too, as soon as we've completed this one.

Ok, thanks a lot.
