I received no reaction to my comment there, so I'll repeat my reasoning against validation here: There are lots different restrictions on different operating system. Puppet cannot and should not know about all of them. The provider knows them and will tell you if setting a shell succeeded or failed. No need to try and copy that behaviour, or worse: enforce something unexpected. If the provider allows to configure a non-existing shell, then please don't try to prevent that and trust the provider to handle it. Instead of resolving external facts into the facts collection, resolve them into an 'external facts' collection. 2. When evaluating custom facts, first add a resolution for each fact in the 'external facts' collection, but use a weight of 1 (the same value that Facter 2.x used). This will restore the 2.x behavior. 3. If custom facts weren't evaluated (no ruby library or --no-custom-facts), then merge the external facts collection into the output facts collection. There is a bug in the apt-provider that will not let you upgrade a package from the standard repo to the version from the backports repo although _install_options => [ '-t', "$ {lsbdistcodename}
-backports" ]_ was given.
As described on http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ all backports are disabled by default. That is: the packages are pinned to 100 which means that you have to explicitly install a backport package (apt-get install -t jessie-backports somepackage) but from then on it will be upgraded automaticallly. I have a simple fix to improve the native compiler's error message for a resource _expression_ missing a colon:
Error: test.pp:1:12: node 'peterhu': expected ':' but found '}'.

This was solved with Spirit's ability to do a negation match on a rule without consuming a token, i.e. the resource body rule was updated to be "an _expression_ followed by something that isn't token '=>' (non-consuming) expected to be followed by token ':' expected to be followed by attributes".
Thus if the token following foo in the above example is =>, it gracefully fails to match the resource body rule (and thus the resource _expression_ rule) and continues to match other rules; however, if the token is not =>, it is expected to be :, thus failing with a better error message where previously it was falling back to matching the name rule and then the hash rule (where this is an expectation point that a => token comes after an _expression_).

At some point I hope we can get rid of the resource default, or change it so that it becomes:
_expression_ '{' LiteralDefault ':' '}'
There is also the bigger idea of changing the compiler to allow duplicate/merging resources in which case the entire concept of default should change from what it is now. (At runtime there is also the issue of dynamic scoping; so defaults are causing problems all over the place).

That is because of the missing : after the resource title, forcing the lookahead for a resource declaration to fail, failing back to assuming it is a name followed by a hash (hence the "expected a =>" bit).

Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-4856 Re: Overriding resource attributes doesn't work through the ENC This is scary: I think this means that the problem still exists (if PR is applied) if the node is matched by a specific node _expression_. (i.e. if the test in this pr has a node expr that matches 'the_node). The observed behavior means that a Resource Override is evaluation order dependent (a similar evaluation order problem can be constructed without involving the ENC). Are they specified to be evaluation order dependant? What is the expected behavior when using both ENC and node expressions to classify? The issue reported here is not a defect if both of these statements are true: Resource Override is evaluation order dependent by design A Node _expression_ matching the current node should be evaluated before ENC by design If resource overrides should not be order dependent, then we have a very problematic problem to solve, and it is a breaking change. Changing the order in which node expressions vs. ENC are evaluated is a breaking change. A fix must therefore wait until puppet 5.0.0. Alternatively - the combination of using an ENC, and node expressions at the same time should be defined as incompatible and the observed behavior is the correct. In this case, we should instead add a check that asserts that the classifiers are not duelling. This could then be made into a strictness check behind the --strict option in the 4.x series and an error in 5.0.0. The work around is to not use classification via the node default clause, and instead always include the base class. There is however one reported behaviour that is not explained by altering the order of evaluation of node vs. ENC. Note that it is reported that: Overriding an attribute of a 'real' type works fine from a class called via the ENC. This indicates that there is something wrong with the logic in resource override. Because the resource instance will be just as lazily defined - but in this case, the type exists a-priori. I suspect that this is the real problem here, and not the order of evaluation.
