Eric Thompson, I'm not sure what you mean. APL performed in order to lookup class parameters will never automatically construct dotted keys and since an integer isn't a valid parameter name, there's never a need to quote. The type of the parameter controls the type of the value, not the key.
Is quoting useful? Consider:
final_sha:
af32445: alpha
ddexx45: beta
6685192: gamma
The hash produced by YAML will contain two keys that are strings, and one key (the last) that is an integer.
{"final_sha"=>{"af32445"=>"alpha", "ddeff4f5"=>"beta", 6685192=>"gamma"}}
A lookup for final_sha.6685192 will return 'gamma' since Hiera parses the dotted key in a way very similar to yaml.
The user might decide to always quote the keys in the yaml file though, to ensure that they are strings:

The obvious scenario here is they are on a brownfield site trying to learn Puppet and we are sending up false flags every time they run any of the Puppet utilities. Warnings or Errors should not be allowed to make any unrelated utilities look as if they have issues. It is counter intuitive, it is obstructive and if this was support trying to help a remote customer it would be misleading to the customer and be unhelpful to support to have to process the error while troubleshooting. The later is literally what as happened to me with the customer, trying to help them run puppet query and having to spend time sidetracked explaining the issue which I'd already flagged to them to fix in the module context . Thomas Hallgren if you force a String type in puppet via things like a heredoc, class parameter with checking against String type, etc, will it lookup a quoted key (nested or otherwise) in hiera? This is an environment that can be untarred into a code dir and verified with {{puppet apply --debug --noop $CODEDIR/environments/repro/site.pp}} . The error only occurs when the resource override is in place. If the overridden parameters are inlined into the resource declaration, it works as expected. This was apparently introduced as part of PUP-7484, and is in general related to the PUP-25 work.According to a bisect, the breaking commit is 38413cd78c61fe34d2ee343ef773a07b4786f65a

This is also about how we serialize and deserialize resources. At present, the deserialized resource will have a string title, whether it's "main" or not and the behavior of having a String "main" is undefined. I'm not at all happy closing this for the reason that we don't know if it might break something, somewhere. We do know that there is a problem in that a deserialzed resource is different from the original. We also know for sure that referencing a resource using the string 'main' as the title causes a problem. To me, it seems very wrong to not fix known problems because we're afraid of the unknown ones. If we don't rely on our tests, then let's improve the tests. We cannot have a situation where we are paralyzed by fear that something might break somewhere down the line. The logic is simply not structured that way - when puppet needs to load a module it does so, and if that module is broken puppet errors. IMO it is doing the right thing, and it should error. If you were to get past that error (we could add an ignore of errors of metadata.json parsing) - you then have the follow on problem that information in metadata.json (which is used at runtime) is missing and the module may then not function as it should (as an example the 4x function API requires dependencies to be correctly described). I am unclear as to what the expected user experience is for this new feature.
My assumption is that this would emit different formats for puppet generate based on the --render-as flag inherited by the face. However that assumption is obviously incorrect based on current results.

Use the puppet/acceptance/tests/language/pcore_resource_types_should_have_precedence_over_ruby.rb to create a module with a custom resource type.

The unique function is really intrinsic to collections and iterators and it makes sense for it to be in Puppet instead of stdlib. For String and Array the function must be compatible with the stdlib version The function should handle all Iterables It should be possible to give the function a lambda that computes the value to do the equality/uniqueness check on.

By adding a function `to` that takes a value and a type in the reverse order from the `new` function sequences of transformations becomes easier to read.
Instead of:
Hash(Array("abc").map |$i,$v| { [$i, $v]})
It is possible to write:
