Currently, for Windows we build and ship gems using the MinGW environment (i.e. using the msvcrt C library). urcrt (universal C runtime) is a newer environment / C library used in the Windows ecosystem. ucrt is used by default by Visual Studio and in newer Ruby versions (> 3?) in the setup-ruby action used in GitHub Actions. We should build and ship ucrt-based puppet gems in addition to / in place of mingw gems. More info about the various environments / libraries: https://www.msys2.org/docs/environments/

In /lib/facter/ec2/rest.rb, Class Userdata < Base, def fetch, does not open the url with the proxy set to nil.  So environments with a proxy set in a VM will cause this fact to fail after a timeout.  Other ec2 facts will succeed as in fetch_endpoint, because the proxy is set to nill.Line 125 should be:open(@baseurl, :proxy => nil).readinstead ofopen(@baseurl).read Pretty sure this is still an issue based on the output in FACT-636.

The one unresolved issue in this ticket is to add a group of volatile facts which is something that is already possible today, so I'm going to close this. If you'd like to contribute a pull request to add a predefined volatile fact group, then please reopen and let us know when you've submitted the PR.

My use-case is a server with many LXC containers. This may affect other people using other container technologies like Docker too.The issue is that each of my containers has two network interfaces (eth0 and eth1) which are associated to virtual interfaces in the host (eg. "veth0.mycontainer" and "veth1.mycontainer").In my specific situation, there are 200 containers, meaning 400 virtual interfaces in the host. This causes facter to take a very long time to run, because it has to create facts for all those interfaces. However, those facts are not interesting to me, so it would be cool to be able to tell facter to ignore interfaces matching a certain pattern (eg. /^veth.+/). Another use case is removing ssh keys in GCE or AWS metadata, e.g. gce.instance.project.attributes.ssh-keysAnother use case is removing some, but not all mountpoints (so we can't block the entire fact).

Currently facter doesn't merge fact values from multiple resolutions, so you can't augment an existing "os" fact with additional data. Since Facter 3 is EOL and there is already a ticket for Facter 4 that describes this in more detail, I'm going to close this as a dup.

Facter 3 is EOL, but Facter 4 calls zfs upgrade -v so would be subject to the same problem. Since it's possible to block zfs related facts, I'm going to close this. But if you'd like to contribute a pull request, then please do and reopen this ticket.

 - Events * logs (stored as a blob)** variable*** tags array*** message** plugin lines** could have debug lines* metrics (stored as a blob)** elements are simple structure (hash of name, value, category)** count of metrics somewhat variable based on type?* resources** containment_path (corresponds to depth of resource in catalog graph)** events array (stored as resource_events)*** most variable old_value new_value message*** ever more than 1 event?Probably simplest to generate reports from the generated catalogs since that provides us with resources and structure already. Also makes the sample dataset more cohesive. How many variations to build per catalog? Since a report is a snapshot of change in time, could build several variants. Need to check and see how benchmark varies reports. Also need to think about unchanged resources. So generate deal with that, or should benchmark mutate reports with that flag on or off?

Jira (PUP-11844) puppet 8.0.0 gem has an incorrect required ruby version

 Puppet / PUP-11844

puppet 8.0.0 gem has an incorrect required ruby version

 PUP 8.0.0

Fix Versions:
 PUP 8.0.1

Priority:
  Normal

Reporter:
 Josh Cooper

The puppet 8.0.0 gem on rubygems. org lists the minimum required version as >= 2.7, but will fail to run if the actual ruby version is < 3.1. So module CI using Ruby 2.7 or 3.0 with unconstrained puppet versions will pull in the puppet 8 gem and fail. I'm going to file a pdk lint check for unconstrained puppet versions, but that being said, the puppet gem versioning should be consistent. This issue was caused because we have two sources of truths for gem metadata. We bumped .gemspec, but not ext/project_data.yaml. The latter is what is actually used when building & shipping gems. There are two sources of truth, because circa 8+ years ago, ruby and bundler didn't handle platform specific gems well. So we added the gem dependencies to project_data.yaml. We added this note to the .gemspec and project_data.yaml to try to avoid this, but didn't take our own advice. See also PA-1077
