In our use-case, we are just starting to use Puppet Enterprise, and we are using filebucket as a means to track and restore file changes while we get comfortable with using the product. It also lets us start using Puppet with some level of protection, while we retrain our "ops" focused staff to adopt a developer's workflow for making changes to our environment.
Two scenarios that come to mind where I see Filebucket being complimentary to source control:
When deploying Puppet code for the first time, to manage existing files in an environment. We may have an authoritative version of file/template X checked into our source repository... but what about the version from that snowflake server that we weren't aware of? Snowflake server makes its first Puppet run; Puppet "corrects" the custom file; and now we are calling the backup administrator and trying to claw the file back (unless we have Filebucket configured).
An app user or a sysadmin makes a necessary edit directly to a config file while troubleshooting, but they forget to go into the Puppet codebase and update the relevant Puppet code later. Someone comes back and starts the Puppet agent on the host; the file gets 'corrected'; and now sysadmin is trying to remember what changes they made when troubleshooting.
These scenarios are not unusual if a customer is transitioning to Puppet, and trying to account for edge-cases in the environment while still managing some server components directly. ("Let's see, sshd_config is managed by Puppet, but I still have to edit this other config file directly... or is that managed by Puppet too?")
I agree that filebucket should be redundant for a shop that keeps all files/manifests under version control... but some shops may find that configuring a git repository, setting up commit hooks, using IDE's for code editing, etc. is overkill for their needs at least when starting out.
For those shops, removing filebucket would be equivalent to declaring: "You had better set up a Git repo or have good backups the day you install Puppet."

The code is kinda busted, it's been around for a very, very long time, and I have a hunch that having git revisions of your manifests+managed files are more valuable than being able to manually retrieve a specific file from the bucket. Was just bitten by the same issue, when trying to configure local agent filebucket backups across an environment. My workaround was to force Puppet Server to use bucketdir manually in site.pp, instead of clientbucketdir.

The Puppet docs are very vague on the implications of having two different bucket directories though. The Configuration Reference and the puppet filebucket man page make no reference to the two different buckets, nor does the filebucket resource reference. If the fix is slated for version 5 of Puppet code, maybe some clarification in docs until then?

That ship is doomed anyway. I think it might be better to just deprecate the old behavior and move forward with a simpler and easier to understand model. Server stores remote filebuckets in /opt/pl/server paths. Agent stores local filebuckets in /opt/pl/puppet paths. Deprecate $clientbucketdir and only use $bucketdir. Now --remote and --local mean exactly what you'd expect. For the small amount of customers using Puppet 4 master say that the buckets are merged together on the server unless they provide a different bucketdir for in the [master] config. I seriously doubt you'll hear many objections to this, and it's a simple straightforward fix. Christopher Price I think the problem is that puppet filebucket uses the [user] section of Puppet config, not the [master], so making it work is not documented or mentioned anywhere. PUP-5206 is concerned with local/client-side filebuckets so there's nothing about Puppet Server here. Title: Message Title Christopher Price commented on PUP-5206 Re: Puppet filebucket --local uses $bucketdir instead of $clientbucketdir Puppet Server doesn't support a master-bucket-dir setting, it's a very very limited list of things that we allow you to override in our config. vardir is one, though. In general if you have a different setting for vardir in [master] of puppet.conf than what you have for master-var-dir in your puppetserver.conf, lots of bad/weird things are likely to happen. It's an unfortunate situation that we hope to improve dramatically in Puppet 5 by removing most or all of the master settings from puppet.conf, but that doesn't help you much now. (Sorry. ) Another thing we need to do for Puppet 5 is have a reckoning for the CLI commands; my expectation / hope is that we will end up with fewer CLI tools that try to span both client-side and server-side tasks. In that world, there might be an entirely different command for interacting with the server filebucket, and that would simplify some of the configuration stuff. I believe we are packaging the HOCON gem with puppet-agent now, and if that's the case, it would be trivial to read Puppet Server's vardir setting programmatically, but to implement that today you'd have to have some way to detect whether the master was Puppet Server or webrick/passenger, and I think that would be tricky or impossible. I think we have some docs somewhere that talk about the importance of keeping the vardir setting consistent between puppet.conf and puppetserver.conf. My best suggestion for now would be to just continue to highlight that as a best practice until we can improve things in Puppet 5, and then, assuming folks are adhering to that policy, you can just use the master vardir setting from Puppet's normal settings accessors. I know that none of what I've stated above provides any outstanding short-term solutions to the issues at hand, but, hopefully maybe it at least clarifies the situation? Puppet agent backs up files to $clientbucketdir but --local flag uses $bucketdir instead.
