[python-SIG] Introduction new member
Hi Folks, I'm seddik, I have joined Fedora Infrastructure Community in July 2020 as a contributor. So I'm helping with automation and monitoring tasks. I have a little experience on python programming, and would be happy to get involved as much as ever. Please feel free to help me with any documentation, or process related to fedora python contribution. I would love to help/ maintain a python application. A very brief introduction.
Hello there, i'm Jaime Andres Torres Bermejo, and i'm currently a student in Colombia (My current time zone is UTC -5, as a result), and i'm currently trying to find places where i could help in fedora, this being my first sent contact. My previous experiences with python include being able to teach it as part of Stanford's CS Bridge program and also being involved in the development of robotics projects on it, mostly concerning computer vision. Besides this, i've also worked on a few integrations between C++ and Python for Robotics, but either way, i'm interested in contributing to Fedora's integration with Python. Package Management and Review seems interesting, however i'm up for recommendations of what kind of work is there to do, if there's anything that comes up, please let me know. Following the > https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Python/JoinSIG guide, it suggests to post > a self-introduction to the mailing list, so that's what I'm doing now :) Welcome :-) I guess there is a lot of important stuff where you can help out (both in Fedora and/or upstream). Just in case you don't find anything and you want to go more into packaging you could check out blocking bugs for issue 1797129 ("certbot in EPEL 7 should use Python 3"): https://bugzilla.redhat.com/buglist.cgi?bug_id=1797129_id_type=anddependson=tvp_id=11041137# (click "Expand all" for the full horror show ;-) There are a lot of bugs to fix but most fixes are really easy as it means adding Python 3 subpackages for EPEL 7 and usually the EPEL 7 version already works with Python 3. However there is a good chance (50% maybe?) you find outdated/ancient packaging which I try to clean up while working on a package: - no tests executed during builds even though upstream has a suitable test suite (this can involve a bit of digging upstream as sometimes you just need 1-2 additional patches to make it work in Fedora) - e.g. bad licensing information - using modern macros If you want to look a bit at upstream Python work which could also help Fedora (+other distros) you might want to check out python-betamax. Currently Fedora can not run the test suite during package builds because it requires internet access. Changing network endpoints are also a reason why the upstream test suite breaks sometimes so it would be beneficial to mock all network interaction. There are two upstream tickets for this: https://github.com/betamaxpy/betamax/issues/145 https://github.com/betamaxpy/betamax/issues/184#issuecomment-612632563 Once that is fixed ideally there is an upstream release which we can package in Fedora. You might want to ping the maintainer so he knows that there is something extra than just bumping the version. Another pet peeve of mine is GPG verification during package builds as described here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackagingDrafts:GPGSignatures#Source_file_verification The issue is finding software which has signed releases and tweaking the spec files accordingly. Just a word of caution: The most frustrating thing when contributing to Fedora (for me) is waiting for maintainers after submitting pull requests etc. This can even affect seemingly high-profile packages like "mesa". For example this pull request of mine did not get any reaction even though it is open for about 1/2 year and I think its benefits are clear cut: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/mesa/pull-request/6 Pagure lists 15 maintainers and I sent several private emails but did not get any response. Most of the times I can get my changes in as needed. Even though I'm not a sponsor feel free to ping me if you have questions or if you feel stuck. I'll try to guide you to the right people/places to get you unblocked. Hi guys, I was looking to join Fedora development, and as I'm most familiar with Python, I thought the Python SIG would be my way to go. Following the https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Python/JoinSIG guide, it suggests to post a self-introduction to the mailing list, so that's what I'm doing now :) I'm a student who started coding about 8 years ago with some basic Python book from the local library, got really into it and stopped again later. I then re-learnt a lot about 4 years ago and started building actual projects. My favourite projects include webservers (using quart or sanic), Discord Bots with discord.py (a great lib!) and parsers (though, I need to work on my knowledge there). I had my adventures into Rust and am pretty solid at JS. A few weeks ago I submitted my first PR into CPython (yay!). I am looking to help in any way possible to bring Fedora and especially Python in Fedora forward. I'm a noob when it comes to mailing lists and stuff - I hope people have patience with me. I'm @Gelbpunkt in IRC and will try to hang out in the fedora-python channel as often as I can. I would apprechiate getting some starting tips in where to contribute and in which way help would be needed. I've looked at the list of starting points - porting Python 2 to 3 seems where I feel most comfortable - though, starting tips would be apprechiated! If required, I'll be willing to dive into cold water ;) Many greetings from Germany,Jens aka adriany___ python-devel mailing list -- python-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to python-devel-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/python-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org

I'd also like to help with python2-to-python3 porting efforts in Fedora. I already got my "Parselmouth I" badge, and would like to unlock the other levels. Packaging is what I'm most passionate about, but I do a small amount of Python development as well. Usually this is focused around whatever other task I need to accomplish. The list of python2 packages to port over is long enough that this will still be a subject for the next few years [0]. Hi! My name is Daniel, and I'd love to help out the Fedora project in some manner. Been a Fedora user on and off since Fedora 1 (used RH 9 back in the day), and I've been coding with Python for about a decade now--things like bioinformatics software, analysis pipelines, and automation--and may be of some use. There appear to be some python2 packages that still need some packaging/porting to python3, but that may not be of use much longer? If there is an area of particular need, and someone has a few spare moments to point me in the right direction, that would be wonderful. I'm not very experienced with packaging in Fedora yet, but I'm a quick learner and self-motivated, so it should be relatively painless :). I care a lot about __quality__ python packaging in Fedora, in part because my job depends on it working flawlessly, but also because I just think python is an awesome language. I evangelize about it to anybody that will listen. I am responsible for Fedora working flawlessly for my global team and our larger community (in which many many people prefer to use Fedora). This can be "fun" when new Fedora releases come out. gcc-6 by default for example. It usually takes a week or two of somebody's time (now mine) to get it all working ok again. All of our build tools are based on python. We recently finished our migration to python3 which makes me very happy. Congratulations! I have a couple python projects I'd like to contribute to Fedora. The two that come to mind are rethinkdb and robotframework (which will be many sub-packages as well). Maybe I'll come up with more. What's the status of rethinkdb and robotframework? Can we help getting these in? I am an active member of the IronPython community and perhaps that means I can help with mono support in Fedora. That sounds interesting! I admit I don't know much about IronPython. Would you care elaborating a bit on your plans regarding IronPython in Fedora? In particular, I want to drive IronPython to be python3 ready. I need to learn how to become an __expert__ python packager for Fedora. I also want to help with the inevitable fires that come up. I read the mailing list daily (hourly?) and get all the notifications about python packages in Fedora. I guess I don't know where to start helping effectively. Helping effectively depends a lot on your area of interest. How do *you* want to make Fedora better? Packaging rethinkdb/robotframework seems like it would be a good start. Then there are always things others would like help with in their quest to make Fedora better. For example, in the Python 3 effort, there's a tracking bug for cases where the packager doesn't have time to do the Python3 port. Some of the bugs there need expert skills, for some it's just that the packager doesn't have time: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1333765 If you'd just like to help others but don't know where to start, this list is a good place to ask. As for the inevitable fires, unless it's an embargoed security issues there should be a public bug on Bugzilla, and usually a flurry of activity on this list or IRC. See the recent majorver-provides discussion for example. I'm hoping to work with the members of python-sig to learn the ropes and join the team. I am not just curious, I am determined. Driven even. Re: [Python-SIG] Self-Introduction: Tim Orling
Hi Petr, It is precisely the security information that I am seeking access to. My job depends on it. I have already done everything in [0]. In some cases more than once. And we are talking over the period of many months. So let me ask this in return: what is the process once someone has done everything in [0]? The only place that I can have any dialog is this mailing list or #fedora-python. Application to the FAS group is a one time, one way thing. Application to the python-sig mailing list is a one way thing. A human on the other end must make some action to move the process forward. Out of frustration, I emailed tomspur recently, as he is listed as the main contact for python-sig group in FAS. Other than a response from him, I have not heard anything else. I can understand that it is summer and people have holidays and it has not been that long yet. But I must reiterate that this process has been going on for months from my side. Fedora already has a problem of perception of being too Red Hat insider in some circles. My observation has been that Red Hat employees have been gently reminded on #fedora-python that they need to apply to python-sig. I am assuming they have been successful. Meanwhile, I wait for action on the part of a member of python-sig. That action could be as simple as, "we don't know you, could you please submit a python package for review so we can start to get to know you?". But that still requires action on the part of a member of python-sig. I can tell you that the response from the perl-sig community was much more inviting. Self-Introduction: Igor Gnatenko
Hi, I'm Igor and I'm working on Fedora as (mostly) packager for > 3 years. Currently I maintain ~ 60 python packages[0]. Currently I'm working at Red Hat in DNF team. Don't know what to say more. I'm already proven packager, but would like to join python SIG group and help. Python-SIG introduction
Hello, I am a member of Red Hat's Python Maintenance team and I have applied for the FAS group as well as the mailing list. I am interested in Python in Fedora, upstream and well, everything python related. Introduction (cydrobolt)
Hey python-devel, I'm Chaoyi, a Fedora user and contributor. I've been using Python for a couple years now, and it has been a great experience. I write my apps in Python whenever I can because of its readability and versatility. I found out about the python-sig through a Trac ticket. I love Python and would love to be involved in the Python community at Fedora. I mostly contribute to Fedora on the infrastructure team, but I also work with the ambassadors and web teams, among others. My FAS and IRC username is "cydrobolt" Thanks, Chaoyi ___ python-devel mailing list python-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org http://lists.fedoraproject.org/admin/lists/python-devel@lists.fedoraproject.org
