Script to easily install eGenix PyRun in a target directory
Hello, in case you haven't heard of eGenix PyRun yet, this is a new simple to install Python runtime that can be used independently of a system installed Python version and is very small compared to a regular Python installation. See http://www.egenix.com/products/python/PyRun/ for details. We're using this runtime in our mxODBC Connect Server product and also internally as virtualenv replacement. At EuroPython we've release it as open source product. To make it easy to install eGenix PyRun, we've now added a script to our download server which lets you install PyRun just as easy as virtualenv (but without its dependency on a possible system installation of Python): https://downloads.egenix.com/python/install-pyrun Per default, the script will download the PyRun binary for the target platform and install distribute as well as pip in the given target directory. Usage is simple: install-pyrun targetdir Try install-pyrun --help for a list of options. Running the script will leave you with a targetdir setup with bin/, lib/ and include/ dir as runtime environment. You can then immediately start using PyRun via bin/pyrun or install additional software using bin/pip. The installation script is brand new and we'd appreciate any feedback you can provide to enhance it. ANN: eGenix mx Base Distribution 3.2.5 (mxDateTime, mxTextTools, etc.)
ANNOUNCING eGenix.com mx Base Distribution Version 3.2.5 for Python 2.4 - 2.7 Open Source Python extensions providing important and useful services for Python programmers. This announcement is also available on our web-site for online reading: http://www.egenix.com/company/news/eGenix-mx-Base-Distribution-3.2.5-GA.html ABOUT The eGenix.com mx Base Distribution for Python is a collection of professional quality software tools which enhance Python's usability in many important areas such as fast text searching, date/time processing and high speed data types. The tools have a proven record of being portable across many Unix and Windows platforms. You can write applications which use the tools on Windows and then run them on Unix platforms without change due to the consistent platform independent interfaces. Contents of the distribution: * mxDateTime - Easy to use Date/Time Library for Python * mxTextTools - Fast Text Parsing and Processing Tools for Python * mxProxy - Object Access Control for Python * mxBeeBase - On-disk B+Tree Based Database Kit for Python * mxURL - Flexible URL Data-Type for Python * mxUID - Fast Universal Identifiers for Python * mxStack - Fast and Memory-Efficient Stack Type for Python * mxQueue - Fast and Memory-Efficient Queue Type for Python * mxTools - Fast Everyday Helpers for Python The package also include a number of helpful smaller modules in the mx.Misc subpackage, such as mx.Misc.ConfigFile for config file parsing or mx.Misc.CommandLine to quickly write command line applications in Python. All available packages have proven their stability and usefulness in many mission critical applications and various commercial settings all around the world. For more information, please see the distribution page: http://www.egenix.com/products/python/mxBase/ NEWS The 3.2.5 release of the eGenix mx Base Distribution is the latest release of our open-source Python extensions. The new patch-level version includes a few important fixes: * Fixed a compatibility problem with Python 2.7.3 on Mac OS X 10.6 and later: Removed mx_customize_compiler() in favor of the standard distutils customize_compiler(). It now installs fine again with pip on more recent Mac OS X versions. Thanks to Leonardo Santagada for bringing this problem to our attention. * mxDateTime: Fixed a possible segfault in mxDateTime that was caused by the lazy datetime module import mechanism not catching all cases where the C API was used in mxDateTime. Thanks to Joel Rosdahl for bringing this to our attention. * Fixed a bug in the mx.Misc.CSV.Reader.objects() method, which triggered a TypeError. If you are upgrading from eGenix mx Base 3.1.x, please also see the eGenix mx Base Distribution 3.2.0 release notes for details on what has changed and which new features are available: http://www.egenix.com/company/news/eGenix-mx-Base-Distribution-3.2.0-GA.html As always, we are providing pre-built binaries for all common platforms: Windows 32/64-bit, Linux 32/64-bit, FreeBSD 32/64-bit, Mac OS X 32/64-bit. Source code archives are available for installation on all other Python platforms, such as Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, etc. To simplify installation in Zope/Plone and other egg-based systems, we have also precompiled egg distributions for all platforms. These are available on our own PyPI-style index server for easy and automatic download. Whether you are using a pre-built package or the source distribution, installation is a simple "python setup.py install" command in all cases. The only difference is that the pre-built packages do not require a compiler or the Python development packages to be installed. For a full list of changes, please refer to the eGenix mx Base Distribution change log at http://www.egenix.com/products/python/mxBase/changelog.html and the change logs of the various included Python packages. DOWNLOADS The download archives and instructions for installing the packages can be found on the eGenix mx Base Distribution page: http://www.egenix.com/products/python/mxBase/ LICENSE The eGenix mx Base package is distributed under the eGenix.com Public License 1.1.0 which is an Open Source license similar to the Python license. You can use the packages in both commercial and non-commercial settings without fee or charge. The package comes with full source code SUPPORT Commercial support for this product is available from

Re: [Jobs] Need some help with Python Job Board
Hi Justin, the default markup is currently set to restructuredtext: https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/blob/master/jobs/models.py but this can be changed to any of these supported ones: https://github.com/jamesturk/django-markupfield as long as we make sure that all existing records continue to be set to ReST (to not mess up the formatting). Since I had a look at WYSIWYG editors, some new ones may have surfaced. The templates are defined here: https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/tree/master/templates/jobs and the main project page has instructions on how to get a local copy of the website working: https://pythondotorg.readthedocs.io/ Thanks, -- Marc-Andre Lemburg Python Software Foundation http://www.python.org/psf/ http://www.malemburg.com/ On 12.11.2017 18:52, Skip Montanaro wrote: > Thanks, Justin. We're repeating the most important part here: EuroPython 2021 will be held online from July 26 - August 1, 2021, using the following structure: - two workshop/training days (July 26 - 27) - three conference days (July 28 - 30) - two sprint days (July 31 - August 1) The next steps are preparing the main conference website, adding content, organizing the call for papers (CFP), setting up the ticket system, the financial aid program, getting everything tested and deployed. Want to join the fun ? -- We'll have busy weeks ahead of us. If you want to help, please consider contacting us with details on where you would like to contribute. Please write to volunte...@europython.eu. EuroPython 2021: Volunteering
The EuroPython 2021 organization is starting and we're looking for more help with running the conference. * EuroPython 2021 * https://ep2021.europython.eu/ For EP2021, we are using a slightly different approach compared to previous years: - All new volunteers will first join the Plaza – our central get-together place for all team members – and only later enter the various work groups (WGs) we have for running the conference. - Additionally, we will have on-boarding calls with everyone to get to know each other and give an overview to the structures, information and groups we have available, as well as the timeline. If you are interested in helping, please write to volunte...@europython.eu. Our team will then answer any questions you may have and get you signed up for the next on-boarding call. Let's celebrate: 20 years of EuroPython
This year's conference will mark the 20th edition of the EuroPython conference. * EuroPython 2021 * https://ep2021.europython.eu/ Since we started touring Europe in 2002 in Charleroi, Belgium, we have come a long way. The conference has grown from the initial 240 to around 1200-1400 attendees every year. The organization had started with a small group of people in a somewhat ad-hoc way and has now grown into a well structured team backed by the non-profit EuroPython Society (EPS), while still keeping the fun spirit of the early days. EuroPython 2002 was the first major all volunteer run event for Python. A lot of other conferences have since emerged in Europe and we're actively trying to help them wherever we can, with our grants program, growing conference knowledge base and our Organizers' Lunch, for which we regularly invite representatives of all European Python conferences to get together to network, exchange experience in organizing events community building and understand how we can most effectively help each other. To celebrate the anniversary, we took a deep look into our archives and have put together live website copies of the last few years, going back all the way to EP2009, which was held in Birmingham, UK. For previous years, archive.org stored some pages of the websites, so let's do a quick tour of 20 years of EuroPython ... https://blog.europython.eu/20th-anniversary-of-europython/ Help spread the word Please help us spread this message by sharing it on your social networks as widely as possible. Farewell to Rob Collins
We would like to share with you the sad news, that Rob Collins has passed away earlier this month, on November 2nd, after a short but intense illness. Many of you may know Rob from the sponsored massage sessions he regularly ran at EuroPython in recent years and which he continued to develop, taking them from a single man setup (single threaded process) to a group of people setup by giving workshops (multiprocessing) and later on by passing on his skills to more leaders (removing the GIL) to spread wellness and kindness throughout our conference series: https://ep2015.europython.eu/conference/talks/sponsored-massage-training-in-aid-of-the-python-software-foundation His massages regularly raised more than a thousand dollars which were donated to the Python Software Foundation (PSF) to do even more good. Rob also gave a lot of thoughtful talks at the EuroPython conferences, always very cheerful, full of humor and many good insights. Here’s a selection: * EuroPython 2015: DumbDev – eight rules for dumb development https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEOI8y0qHMk * EuroPython 2015: Lightning Talk announcing the Python Massage Foundation https://youtu.be/WmvTfUYJ2Bw?t=1539 * EuroPython 2013: TDM Test Driven Madness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj4nwh_VrPM * EuroPython 2012: An introduction to his neck and and shoulder massages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itn8W9zI0Wk * EuroPython 2011: Pricing products using Python graphs and sets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN9nIBxDXU8 Rob was a true Pythonista from the heart. He will always be remembered for his humor, great spirit and kindness. You were such a cheerful person. We will miss you, Rob. ANN: Python Events Calendar - Please submit your 2017 events
[Please help spread the word by forwarding to other relevant mailing lists, user groups, etc. world-wide; thanks :-)] ANNOUNCING Python Events Calendars - Please submit your 2017 events maintained by the Python Software Foundation (PSF) and a group of volunteers INTRODUCTION As some of you may know, the PSF has a team of volunteers who are maintaining a set of central Python event calendars. We currently have two calendars in place: * Python Events Calendar - meant for conferences and larger gatherings focusing on Python or a related technology (in whole or in part) * Python User Group Calendar - meant for user group events and other smaller local events The calendars are displayed on https://www.python.org/events/ and http://pycon.org/. There's also a map mashup to show events near you or get an overview of what currently going in the Python community: http://lmorillas.github.io/python_events/ You can subscribe to the calendars using iCal and RSS feeds and also embed the calendar widgets on your sites. We have also added a Twitter feed @PythonEvents to get immediate updates whenever a new event is added. Please see our wiki page for details: https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEventsCalendar The calendars are open to the world-wide Python community, so you can have local user group events, as well as regional and international conference events added to the calendars. NEWS Looking back, the calendars have proven to be a great tool for the Python community to connect, with more than 250 conferences and more than a hundred of user group events listed since 2012. We would therefore like to encourage everyone to submit their 2017 events, so that the Python community can get a better overview over what's happening in Python land. ADDING EVENTS Please see the instructions at https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEventsCalendar#Submitting_an_Event for details on how to submit an event. We've made it really easy for you: just need to send an email to our team address using the email template we provide for this. Thanks. MORE INFORMATION More information on the calendars, the URLs, feed links, IDs, embedding, etc. is available on the wiki: https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEventsCalendar Enjoy, -- Marc-Andre Lemburg Python Software Foundation http://www.python.org/psf/ http://www.malemburg.com/ -- https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list

Not in my book :-) It may be fine if the object type stays the same or in those few cases, where you want to accept multiple different types for a parameter and then coerce these to a type that you use in the rest of the code block. But even in those cases, debugging becomes easier if you keep the original binding in place (since you then know where the new values originated). EuroPython 2018: Our conference logo
After intense work with our designer, we are happy to present the logo for the EuroPython 2018 conference: https://blog.europython.eu/post/171656128512/europython-2018-our-conference-logo The colors and patterns are a play on Scottish kilts, referring to the location, and a theatre curtain, representing the many presentations we’ll have at the conference. EuroPython 2018: Hotel tips and general update
As you may know, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is starting one week after EuroPython 2018 in Edinburgh. Since this typically attracts many thousands of people and artists, the hotels are filling up quickly in Edinburgh. If you’re planning to attend EuroPython, please book your hotel early. Many booking sites offer free cancellations, so there’s no risk in making reservations now, even if you decide not to come in the end. Room allocation for EuroPython 2018 --- To help with this, we have partnered with the Edinburgh Convention Bureau to set aside a number of hotel rooms which are reserved for EuroPython attendees. These rooms will be held reserved until a few weeks before the conference and are also available with a free cancellation option. The Edinburgh Convention Bureau has setup the following website for booking rooms from this allocation: * EuroPython 2018 Hotel Booking Website * https://cabsedinburgh.eventsair.com/QuickEventWebsitePortal/europython-2018/home-page (run by the Edinburgh Convention Bureau) Update on EuroPython 2018 - Meanwhile, we wanted to give you an update of where we are with the conference organization: We are still working on getting everything setup for launching the website, opening ticket sales and the Call for Proposals (CFP). This year the EuroPython Society (EPS) will be running the ticket sales, rather than a local organization and we are facing some challenges related to VAT taxes, which are taking longer to sort out than expected. This is the main reason for the delay you are seeing, but we’re getting there. EuroPython 2018: Ticket Sales Update
Some community members have been wondering why tickets are not available yet. We’d like to update you on the current status. EuroPython is run by the EuroPython Society located in Sweden. However, the conference being held in the UK, we have to charge UK VAT for the tickets we sell and submit the collected VAT to the UK tax authorities. In order to be able to do this, we have register with the UK tax authorities and this is where we have experienced unforseen delays. After several attempts at getting this sorted, our friends at PyCon UK have helped us find a capable accountant with whom we are currently implementing the registration. Hopefully, the tax authorities won’t take too long to issue us a UK VAT ID. As soon as we have it, we will start ticket sales. Ticket Prices Available --- That said, we do already have some more information for you: we have decided on the initial ticket prices for EuroPython 2018. In case you need budget approval from your employer, you may put in your request now. Please see our blog post or registration page for full details on the ticket pricing: * https://blog.europython.eu/post/173732504642/europython-2018-ticket-sales-update * https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/registration/buy-tickets/ Enjoy, -- EuroPython 2018 Team https://ep2018.europython.eu/ https://www.europython-society.org/ PS: Please forward or retweet to help us reach all interested parties: https://twitter.com/europython/status/994182851997421569 Thanks. -- https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
EuroPython 2018: Please reset your password
Regular password resets are always a good thing to do, but this time we have a specific reason to ask you to consider taking the extra time. In December 2017, our ISP detected port scans originating from our server and informed us about these. During the analysis, we found that someone (or better: some script) had found a way to break-in to our web server running the EuroPython website. We quickly fixed the situation, reset all authorizations and put measures in place to strictly limit the number of people having access to the server to a minimum and better secure the server against future break-in attempts. The server was only used as SSH port scanning relay and we found no evidence of loss or leakage of data. We don’t believe that any of your personal information got into the wrong hands, but even though the passwords are stored using secure and salted hashes (using PBKDF2), we still recommend to reset your password to be on the safe side. We know that this notice is late and we’d like to apologize for the hassle caused by this. If you have just created a new account on the https://ep2018.europython.eu/ website we just launched, no further action is necessary. We only recommend the password reset if you have had an account with us in previous years and this account is active on the new https://ep2018.europython.eu/ website. Logins on the older versions of our website are disabled for regular users, so no action is necessary on these. Please see our blog post for instructions on how to reset your password: https://blog.europython.eu/post/173793513217/europython-2018-please-reset-your-password Enjoy, -- EuroPython 2018 Team https://ep2018.europython.eu/ https://www.europython-society.org/ PS: Please forward or retweet to help us reach all interested parties: https://twitter.com/europython/status/994879080263831552 Thanks. -- https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
EuroPython 2018: Call for Proposals closes on Sunday
We would like to remind you that our two week call for proposals (CFP) closes on Sunday, May 20. If you’d like to submit a talk, please see our CFP announcement for details: https://blog.europython.eu/post/173666124852/europython-2018-call-for-proposals-cfp-is-open Submissions are possibe via the CFP page on the EuroPython 2018 website: https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/call-for-proposals/ We’d like to invite everyone to submit proposals for talks, trainings, panels, etc. Looking at the submission counts, we are especially looking for more trainings submissions (note that you get a free conference ticket and training pass as trainer of a selected training). Submissions will then go into a talk voting phase where EuroPython attendees of previous years can vote on the submissions. The program work group will then use these votes as basis for the final talk selection and scheduling. We expect to have the schedule available by end of May. Please help us spread this reminder by sharing it on your social networks as widely as possible. Thank you ! EuroPython 2018: Talk voting is open
At EuroPython, we let our attendees have a significant say in the selection of the sessions which are presented at the conference. We call this “talk voting” - attendees can tell us which submitted talks they’d like to see at the conference. To be eligible to vote for talks, you need to be a submitter of talks and everyone who attended one of the previous year’s EuroPython conferences. Since we’re a bit short on time, talk voting will only be possible for a few days, until Sunday, May 27. How talk voting works - Please log in and proceed to the page https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/speakers/talk-voting/ to vote for talks. The talk voting page lists all submitted proposals, including talks, trainings and posters. At the top of the page you find a few filters you can use to narrow down the list by e.g. selecting tags you’re interested in or only show one type of proposal and also to select the sorting order. For each submission, you can find the talk title with a link to the talk page. In order to vote, have a look at the title/abstract and then indicate your personal interest in attending this session. We have simplified the voting process and you may chose between these four options: “must see”, “want to see”, “maybe” and “not interested”. Please ignore the option “not voted” - it’s an alias for “not interested”. If you have questions about the talk, you can go to the talk page and enter a comment. Note that your votes are automatically saved to the backend without the need to click on a save or submit button. Talk selection -- After the talk voting phase, the EuroPython Program Workgroup (WG) will use the votes to select the talks and build a schedule. The majority of the talks will be chosen based on the talk voting results. Part of the available slots will be directly assigned by the Program WG based on editorial criteria to e.g. increase diversity or give a chance to less mainstream topics. In general, the Program WG will try to give as many speakers a chance to talk as possible. If speakers have submitted multiple talks, the one with the highest rate will most likely get selected. EuroPython 2018: Early Bird Ticket Sales
We are happy to announce that we’ll start early bird tickets on Thursday, at around 12:00 CEST. We have 200 conference tickets available at the Early Bird rate and they usually sell out within a day or two. Invoices will be available in a few weeks - Since we’re running the conference in the UK this year and conference tickets are taxed at the location of the conference, we have to charge and pay 20% UK VAT on the tickets. In order to do this, we need a UK VAT registration and associated VAT ID. Unfortunately, this whole process has taken way too long and so we’re starting ticket sales without issuing invoices at this time, simply because we would not be able to issue valid VAT invoices. We will issues these as soon as we have the UK VAT ID, which should be within the next couple of weeks if all goes well. We’ll announce this on the blog and you will then be able to download the invoices in your website account. Please get a separate conference ticket for this. Available training sessions --- We have already selected an initial set of trainings, you can view on our session list: https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/events/sessions/#Training-sessions We will also have a few sponsored trainings, which are free (you don’t need a training pass to attend these). These will be announced in a separate blog post. Only a limited number of training passes available -- Since we don’t want to overbook the trainings sessions, we have limited the number of training passes to 200. Training pass sales will start on Friday, June 6, at around 12:00 CEST (that’s 10:00 UTC, 11:00 BST, 13:00 EEST, etc.). Given the experience with the early bird tickets, which sold out in less than 45 minutes, we recommend to get your ticket as soon as you can. Regular conference tickets are selling out much faster than last year as well, so the same recommendation applies to those as well: https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/registration/buy-tickets/ Help spread the word Please help us spread this message by sharing it on your social networks as widely as possible. You’ll get the context you need to get the most out of the rest of the EuroPython conference. Bring your laptop, because this will be a hands-on session! This session will be presented in English (although a few of the coaches do speak basic Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese). Please see the Beginners’ Day page for the full program: https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/events/beginners-day/ If you’d like to come, please do register in advance for this session, so that we know how to plan to make it the best yet. We need to know the numbers for planing the workshop. EuroPython 2018: Inviting European Python Conference Organizers
The EuroPython Society (EPS), who is organizing the EuroPython conference, last year extended it’s mission to also provide help for the Python community in Europe in general. As part of this, we would like to get to know, and help create closer ties between organizers of other European Python events. Organizers’ Lunch - We would like to invite representatives of all European Python conference to EuroPython 2018 to join us for an organizers’ lunch. We’re planing the lunch for Friday, July 27, in the organizer’s room (Soutra Suite). Our aim is to get to know each other, exchange experience in organizing events and to find out how we, as EPS, can most effectively help other conferences going forward. Free Tickets To support and facilitate this, we are giving out one free conference ticket per conference team, so that each team can send a representative to the organizers’ lunch. If your team wants to send someone to join, please write to bo...@europython.eu, mentioning the conference you’re organizing and some background on your team. EuroPython 2018: Community Discounts
The EuroPython Society (EPS) extended its mission last year to not only run the EuroPython conference, but also provide help for the Python community in Europe in general. Let’s all meet at EuroPython In addition to the Python Organizers Lunch (see previous post), which focuses on conference organizers, we are also establishing a program to support attendees of Python user groups and conferences in Europe. We’d like to invite all of you to EuroPython 2018 this year. Of course, we cannot give out free tickets to everyone, but we can at least recognize your participation in the Python community by giving out discounts for the conference. Discounts for EuroPython Tickets If you are running a Python event (conference or user group) in Europe, please reach out to bo...@europython.eu to request a coupon code for your group, which you can then pass on to your group members or attendees. If you are not running a user group or conference, but a regular attendee of one, please contact your organizers to have them submit a request. We can only distribute codes at the user group and conference organizer level. The coupon codes are valid for conference tickets bought starting today and will give you a 10% discount on the ticket price (both regular and late bird prices). The codes are setup for user group sizes of between 30-50 members, but we are also extending this to organizers and attendees of larger conferences. If you need a code valid for larger groups, please mention this in your email. Help spread the word Please help us spread this message by sharing it on your social networks as widely as possible. EuroPython 2018: Schedule available
Over the last few weeks, our program WG has been working hard on getting the schedule all lined up. Today, we’re releasing it to the Python world. Schedule for EuroPython 2018 * https://ep2018.europython.eu/en/events/schedule/ * With 140 speakers and more than 150 sessions, we have a full packed program waiting for you. Please note that the schedule may still change in details, but the overall layout is fixed now. Book your EuroPython 2018 Ticket Please make sure you book your ticket in the coming days. We will switch to late bird rates closer to the event. If you want to attend the training sessions, please buy a training pass. We only have very few left and will close sales for these later this week. Travel & accommodation tips --- Since we’re close the conference and The Fringe is starting a week later, Edinburgh is in high demand. If you’re having problems finding a hotel, please also consider searching for apartments on the well known booking sites. For traveling to Edinburgh, we suggest also considering a combination of plane and train or bus. London, Birmingham and Manchester all provide train and bus lines going to Edinburgh and by booking a combination, you can often save a lot, compared to a direct flight to Edinburgh. Invitation to the EuroPython Society General Assembly 2018
We would like to invite all EuroPython attendees and EuroPython Society (EPS) members to attend this year’s EPS General Assembly (GA), which we will run as in-person meeting at the upcoming EuroPython 2018, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK from July 23 - 29. We had already sent a invite to the members mailing on 2018-06-17, but would like to announce this more broadly as well and with complete agenda. Place of the General Assembly meeting - We will meet on Friday, July 27, at 14:15 BST in room Kilsyth of the EICC, The Exchange, Edinburgh EH3 8EE. There will be a short talk to invite volunteers to participate in organizing EuroPython 2019 in preparation for next year’s event at 14:00 BST in the same room, right before the General Assembly. You may want to attend that talk as well. In this talk, we will present the EuroPython Workgroup Concept, we have been using successfully for the past years now. General Assembly Agenda --- The agenda contents for the assembly is defined by the EPS bylaws. We are planning to use the following structure: - Opening of the meeting - Selection of meeting chair, secretary and 2 checkers of the minutes - Motion establishing the timeliness of the call to the meeting - Presentation of the annual report and annual accounts by the board - Presentation of the report of the auditor - Discharge from liability for the board - Presentation of a budget by the outgoing board. - Acceptance of budget and decision on membership fees for the upcoming year - Election of members of the board - Election of chair of the board - Election of one auditor and one replacement. The auditor does not have to be certified in any way and is normally selected among the members of the society. - The optional election of a nomination committee for the next annual meeting of the General Assembly - Propositions from the board, if any - Motions from the members, if any - Closing of the meeting In an effort to reduce the time it takes to go through this long list, which is mandated by the bylaws, we will try to send as much information to the members mailing list before the GA, so that we can limit presentations to a minimum. Election of the members of the board The EPS bylaws limit the number of board members to one chair and 2 - 8 directors, at most 9 directors in total. Experience has shown that the board members are the most active organizers of the EuroPython conference, so we try to get as many board members as possible to spread the work load. All members of the EPS are free to nominate or self nominate board members. Please write to bo...@europython-society.org no later than Friday, July 20 2017, if you want to run for board. We will then include you in the list we’ll have in the final nomination announcement before the GA, which is scheduled for July 21. The following people from the current board have already shown interest in running for board in the next term as well (in alphabetical order): - Anders Hammarquist - Darya Chyzhyk - Marc-André Lemburg We will post more detailed information about the candidates and any new nominations we receive in a separate blog post. Propositions from the board --- We would like to propose to grant CPython Core Developers a lifetime free entry to EuroPython conferences in recognition for their efforts to build the foundation on what our community is built. The details are to be defined by the EPS board. The bylaws allow for additional propositions to be announced up until 5 days before the GA, so the above list is not necessarily the final list. Motions from the members None at the moment. EPS members are entitled to suggest motions to be voted on at the GA. The bylaws require any such motions to be announced at least 5 days before the GA. If you would like to propose a motion, please send it to bo...@europython-society.org no later than Friday, July 20 2017, so we can announce the final list to everyone. EuroPython 2018: Introducing Smarkets
We are very pleased to have Smarkets as Keystone Sponsor for EuroPython 2018. You can visit them at the most central booth in our exhibit area, the Lennox Suite in the EICC, and take the opportunity to chat with their staff or enjoy their escape room. Please find below a hosted blog post from Smarkets. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Smarkets: where Python and financial trading meet = Smarkets operates one of the world’s most powerful and innovative event trading exchanges. We have engineered our technology in-house - without using white label products - and Python powers our platform. In fact, our codebase is fully Python3 and is deployed across multiple teams of engineers within our self-managed organisation. We combine financial technology with the startup culture of fast development and frequent releases; the perfect environment to make use of Python’s data science and rapid prototyping capabilities. Python language helps us to remain nimble as it allows us to move from idea to product extremely quickly. Python not only has a solid standard library but also an extensive community which means that packages exist for just about everything you could ever need. Join us at EuroPython where our workshop will show you how Smarkets is using Python to revolutionise sports trading. You will learn more about Python’s implementation on an exchange, how trading bots work and some strategies that can be employed to successfully trade sports. Put this theory in action with access to our API and a skeleton bot, which you will use as a base to create your very own trading bot. The workshop is free people with a conference ticket or training pass. Bring your laptops! Come and check out our booth #10 to learn more about life at Smarkets and what it’s like to work at the UK’s largest self-managed organisation where you get to be your own boss, define the projects you work on and even get to set your own salary. If that’s not tempting enough, we’ve got an actual escape room on our booth as one of the main attractions at EuroPython this year! If you’ve got 30 minutes to spare or simply fancy the challenge, come along and see if you can crack your way out! Successful teams will also automatically be entered into a prize draw that we’ll be running each day. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Help spread the word Please help us spread this message by sharing it on your social networks as widely as possible. EuroPython 2019: Seeking venues
Dear EuroPython'istas, We are in preparations of our venue RFP for the EuroPython 2019 edition and are asking for your help in finding the right locations for us to choose from. If you know of a larger venue - hotel or conference center - that can accommodate at least 1400 attendees, please send the venue details to bo...@europython.eu. We will then make sure to include them in our RFP once we send it out. The more venues we gather to reach out to, the better of a selection process we can guarantee, which in return, will ultimately result in a better conference experience for everybody involved. When sending us venue suggestions, please make sure to provide us with the following: name and URL of the venue, country and city, as well as the contact details of the sales person in charge of inquiries (full name, email and phone). We were planning to start the RFP process in the coming days, so please make sure you send us your recommendations as soon as possible. EuroPython 2016 Keynote: Gaël Varoquaux
We are pleased to announce our final keynote speaker for EuroPython 2016: *** Gaël Varoquaux *** About Gaël Varoquaux Gaël Varoquaux is an INRIA faculty researcher working on data science for brain imaging in the Neurospin brain research institute (Paris, France). His research focuses on modeling and mining brain activity in relation to cognition. Years before the NSA, he was hoping to make bleeding-edge data processing available across new fields, and he has been working on a mastermind plan building easy-to-use open-source software in Python. He is a core developer of scikit-learn, joblib, Mayavi and nilearn, a nominated member of the PSF, and often teaches scientific computing with Python using the scipy lecture notes. The Keynote: Scientist meets web dev: how Python became the language of data --- Python started as a scripting language, but now it is the new trend everywhere and in particular for data science, the latest rage of computing. It didn’t get there by chance: tools and concepts built by nerdy scientists and geek sysadmins provide foundations for what is said to be the sexiest job: data scientist. "In my talk I’ll give a personal perspective, historical and technical, on the progress of the scientific Python ecosystem, from numerical physics to data mining. I will discuss low-level technical aspects, such as how the Python world makes it easy to move large chunks of number across code, touch upon current exciting developments in scikit-learn and joblib, but also talk about softer topics, such as project dynamics or documentation, as software’s success is determined by people." EuroPython 2016: On-desk rates and day passes
It’s getting really close to the conference now and we will be switching to the on-desk rates for tickets on July 8. The prices will increase by about 30%, so if you want to still get tickets at the normal rate, please register for EuroPython 2016 as soon as possible: *** EuroPython 2016 Registration *** https://ep2016.europython.eu/en/registration/ Full Conference Tickets --- These are the on-desk rates for full conference tickets (all 8 days): * Student full ticket: EUR 180.00 * Personal full ticket: EUR 470.00 * Business full ticket: EUR 750.00 Day Passes -- As in the past, we will sell day passes at the conference venue. To make things more affordable especially for students and other people who want to attend the Beginners’ Day or the sprints, we have decided to split the day pass prices into ones valid from Monday-Friday for the main conference days and the weekend days. Day passes for the main conference (valid for the day when they are purchased): * Student conference day pass: EUR 50.00 * Personal conference day pass: EUR 140.00 * Business conference day pass: EUR 225.00 Day passes for the first Sunday (Beginners’ Day) and the sprints weekend (valid for the day when they are purchased): * Student weekend day pass: EUR 25.00 * Personal weekend day pass: EUR 70.00 * Business weekend day pass: EUR 110.00 All prices include 10% Spanish VAT. EuroPython 2016: Please configure your tickets
The EuroPython website supports buying tickets for other people (friends, colleagues, etc.). As a result, it is necessary to assign the tickets you buy to either yourself or someone else. The assignment process is explained below. Please tell us your preferences --- The reason we’re interested in you applying this configuration as soon as possible, is that the tickets include a number of preferences which we need to know about in order to properly prepare the conference. When assigning tickets you will fill some fields, telling us your t-shirt size and cut (women or men style) and your diet preferences. If you don’t provide this information, we cannot assure we’ll have the right t-shirt available for you. Likewise, if you are vegetarian, it is important to mark this in the preferences, so that we can order enough vegetarian food. How to assign tickets to attendees -- First you need to log in and go to your profile and, if you already bought your tickets, you will see something similar to this. Click on "View your tickets". After you have navigated to the tickets, we need you to assign the ticket: simply hover over the ticket and you will see two options. Please select, if the ticket is for you or for someone else. Remember: Before assigning the ticket the other persons, these must be registered on the website. Otherwise, the assignment won’t work. If you have assigned the tickets to someone else, please let them know. The system will send out automatic emails, but it’s safer to send a separate email so that the information doesn’t get lost in a spam filter. How to edit the fields of the tickets - After assigning the ticket, each attendee will need to fill out the ticket preferences using his/her profile page (don’t forget to click save to store the settings). Some additional help for the preference form: * Tagline: This line will appear after you name. Be original! * Diet: Omnivorous, Vegetarian or Other (we’ll try to provide food for other diets as well) * Python experience: Whats your experience level with Python? You can also enter “no comment”, if you prefer not to make this information public. * Dates: Which days do you plan to attend. This is not binding in any way, it just helps us to better prepare for the conference. EuroPython 2016: Last day to get tickets at regular rate
We will be switching to the on-desk rates for tickets tomorrow, so today is your last chance to get tickets at the regular rate, which is about 30% less than the on-desk rate: EuroPython 2016 Registration *** https://ep2016.europython.eu/registration/ *** Day Passes -- As in the past, we will also sell day passes at the conference venue. To make things more affordable especially for students and other people who want to attend the Beginners’ Day or the sprints, we have split the day pass prices into ones valid from Monday-Friday for the main conference days and ones for the weekend days. EuroPython 2016: Getting your badge & ticket IDs
For this year, we have reconsidered the way we give out badges to try to reduce the queue lengths and your waiting time. Badges distributed based on ticket ID - To make finding badges easier, we have printed the ticket ID on each badge and will distribute badges based on ticket ID ranges. Each queue will be for one ticket ID range. Finding your ticket ID -- We will send all attendees an email with their ticket ID, but you can also look on the website to find your ticket ID. Simply log in and then check the ticket page to find your ticket preview: https://ep2016.europython.eu/p3/tickets/ The ticket ID is listed at the bottom of the ticket preview. If you forget your ticket ID, no worries. We will have a number of volunteers at the registration desk with a mobile app to quickly search the ticket database for your ticket. Simply ask them to help you find the right queue and you’re all set. Should they have trouble finding your ticket in the database, you’ll be asked to visit the registration counter to sort out any issues. Please check your ticket Please note that in order to find your tickets, the person who bought the ticket will have to have assigned the ticket to you, as we’ve outline in a previous blog post: http://blog.europython.eu/post/146895278207/europython-2016-please-configure-your-tickets We already know that there are a number of tickets which have not been assigned to the final attendee, so please double check that you can see your ticket on the ticket page after logging in to the website: https://ep2016.europython.eu/p3/tickets/ If you cannot find your ticket on that page, please ask the person who bought the ticket for you. The process for assigning the ticket is described in our blog post on the topic. If all else fails, simply write to our helpd...@europython.eu for help. Opening times of the registration desks --- These are the planned opening times of the registration desks where you can pick up your badge (or buy conference tickets or day passes). * Sunday, July 17 In the afternoon at 16:00, we will open the registration desk at the main conference venue, the Euskalduna Conference Center (ECC). It’ll stay open until around 19:00. You will be able to pick up the badges for your already purchased tickets as well as buy new ones at this registration desk. * Monday, July 18 The registration desk at the conference venue, the Euskalduna Conference Center (ECC), will open at 08:00 on Monday. Conference bag distribution --- We will do the bag stuffing on Sunday, starting at around 16:00 at the ECC. You’re welcome to come and help. EPS: Announcing the Guido van Rossum Core Developer Grant
At the last General Assembly of the EuroPython Society (EPS) at EuroPython 2018 in Edinburgh, we voted on a new grant program we want to put in place for future EuroPython conferences. We all love Python and this is one of the main reasons we are putting on EuroPython year after year, serving the "cast of thousands" which support Python. But we also believe it is important to give something back to the main team of developers who have contributed lots of their time and energy to make Python happen: the Python Core Developers. This group is small, works countless hours, often in their free time and often close to burnout due to not enough new core developers joining the team. Free Tickets for Python Core Developers --- To help with growing the team, putting it more into the spotlight and give them a place to meet, demonstrate their work and a stage to invite new developers, we decided to give Python Core Developers free entry to future EuroPython conferences, starting with EuroPython 2019 in Basel, Switzerland In recognition of Guido’s almost 20 years of leading this team, and with his permission, we have named the grant “Guido van Rossum Core Developer Grant”. Details of the grant program are available on our core grant page: https://www.europython-society.org/core-grant PS: If you are a core developer and want to organize a workshop, language summit or similar event at EuroPython 2019, please get in touch with our program workgroup (prog...@europython.eu) soon, so that we can arrange rooms, slots, etc. PPS: If you want to become a core developer, please have a look at the Python Dev Guide: https://devguide.python.org/coredev/ Help spread the word Please help us spread this message by sharing it on your social networks as widely as possible. EuroPython 2019: Call for Proposals
We are happy to announce the Call for Proposals is now open. The CfP will close on Sunday in two weeks: * Sunday, May 12 23:59:59 CEST * Please submit your proposal via our website: * https://ep2019.europython.eu/events/call-for-proposals/ * We’re looking for proposals on every aspect of Python: programming from novice to advanced levels, applications and frameworks, or how you have been involved in introducing Python into your organization. EuroPython is a community conference and we are eager to hear about your experience. Please also forward this Call for Proposals to anyone that you feel may be interested. Presenting at EuroPython We will accept a broad range of presentations, from reports on academic and commercial projects to tutorials and case studies. As long as the presentation is interesting and potentially useful to the Python community, it will be considered for inclusion in the program. Can you show something new and useful? Can you show the attendees how to: use a module? Explore a Python language feature? Package an application? If so, please consider submitting a talk. PyData EuroPython 2019 -- As usual there will be a PyData track at this year’s conference. Please submit your papers for the PyData track through the EuroPython form. Any suitable (i.e. data science, AI and analytics) submission will be considered for the PyData track. The PyData track is run in cooperation with NumFocus. The 2019 PyData track will be on Tuesday (trainings), Wednesday (talks) and Thursday (talks). There are six different kinds of contributions that you can present at EuroPython: Formats --- * Talks and trainings should be held in English language only. * Regular Talk / approx. 110 slots These are standard “talks with slides”, allocated in slots of The Q&A session, if present, is included in the time slot. 3-5 Minutes for Q&A is a good practice. We will only offer a limited number of 60 minute slots, please only choose these slots for in-depth sessions or topics which require more background information. - 30 minutes (ca. 50%) - 45 minutes (ca. 34%) - 60 minutes (ca. 16%) We are looking for an approx. distribution of expertise (Python or domain expertise) - 40% Beginners - 25% Intermediate - 25% Advanced * Trainings / 16 slots Deep-dive into a subject with all details. These sessions are apporx. 3 hours long. The training attendees will be encouraged to bring a laptop. They should be prepared with less slides and more source code. Room capacity for the trainings rooms is approx. 100 seats. * Panels A panel is group of three to six experts plus a moderator discussing a matter in depth, an intensive exchange of (maybe opposite) opinions. A panel may be 30-60 minutes long. We have introduced this interactive format for EuroPython 2017 due to the many requests we have received to make the conference more interactive and have more challenging / mind-bending content in place. Please note if you suggest a panel you will have to organise the panelists and coordinate with the Program WG, panelist will require a ticket to the conference. * Interactive This is a completely open 60-minute format. Feel free to make your suggestions. There are only two rules: it must be interactive, real-time human-to-human-interaction and of course compliant with the EuroPython Code of Conduct. * Posters / 20 slots Posters are a graphical way to describe a project or a technology, printed in large formats; posters are exhibited at the conference, can be read at any time by participants, and can be discussed face to face with their authors during the poster session. * Helpdesk / 6 slots Helpdesks are a great way to share your experience on a technology, by offering to help people answering their questions and solving their practical problems. You can run a helpdesk by yourself or with colleagues and friends. Each helpdesk will be open for 3 hours in total, 1.5 hours in the morning and 1.5 hours in the afternoon. People looking for help will sign up for a 30 minute slot and talk to you. There is no specific preparation needed; you just need to be proficient in the technology you run the helpdesk for. * Lightning Talks A lightning talk (LT) is a short presenatation which must not be longer than five minute. LTs are not via the CfP but walk-in registations, see here. Community Based Talk Voting --- Attendees who have bought a ticket in time for the Talk Voting period gain the right to vote for talks submitted during the Call For Proposals. The Program WG will also set aside a number of slots which they will then select based on other criteria to e.g. increase diversity or give a chance to less mainstream topics. Conference Layout - Please note that the conference layout has changed in 2018, the main
