Re: [QGIS-Developer] A load of updates in OSGeo4W

2024-04-18 Thread Jürgen E . Fischer via QGIS-Developer
Hi Julien,

QGIS-Developer wrote:

That should not be necessary anymore. The dependencies should be fine for a
while now. Some of them were behind and complaints about that were increasing.

Some with regard to security, although some if not all just based on plain scan
results and not on actual assessments of the real severity of vulnerabilities -
which should have been low in the context of QGIS Desktop. Still they were
valid.

We were still using OpenSSL 1 (no complaints about that though), which both Qt5
and Python were build against. So both were blocking the update to OpenSSL 3.
And Qt6 needed to be introduced, preferably not built against the old OpenSSL -
although that would probably still have been a possibility.

So Python and Qt5 had to be rebuilt along with there reverse dependencies,
which almost is everything else there is. So that was a good time to also
update.

To some.

There's not much discussion about OSGeo4W. There's is a bug tracker
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo4w and a mailing list

Just for the record: I also don't like the move, I also feel the same pain and
I also think you're normal.

To make it worse the advertised discourse mailing list option apparently
doesn't work well - at least for "normal" people (see

ubuntugis for jammy has GDAL 3.8.3 (but lacks LERC support; but has PDAL
2.6.2).

Debian unstable has GDAL 3.8.4 with LERC support (but is not suited for jammy).

We have QGIS builds of the release branches and master for both of them
(ubuntugis and debian just the LTR branch).

OSGeo4W packages, MSIs and Mac packages are already available, but the
debian/ubuntu packages are still building, while the MSIs are being tested.
Once that's done the website will be updated.

But that's nothing new - most of that happens every month.

Did you run into the gperf issue? Where gperf more or less silently produces
nearly empty files that lead to unclear link errors later? All that deep in
webengine/chromium? Or the long path issue?

Honestly I wasn't even aware that it was still there and I don't recall any
complaints that it was not working (or that OTB was removed/missing in OSGeo4W

On a new ltr release the redirect has to be updated (currently on
www2.qgis.org):

RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT}
QGIS\/(2\.14\.|3\.4\.|3\.10\.|3\.16\.|310|316|322|328)
RewriteRule ^/version\.txt$ /version-ltr.txt [L]

There are version.txt and version-ltr.txt and requests from a LTR version
are taken to version-ltr.txt if they request version.txt.

That was dropped and is included in libpdalcpp - so it's probably not needed

The recipe is at

so the package was built with:

https://github.com/qtwebkit/qtwebkit/releases/download/qtwebkit-5.212.0-alpha4/qtwebkit-5.212.0-alpha4.tar.xz

Huh? py3_env.bat was used in OSGeo4W to switch from the default python2
install to python3. As OSGeo4W v2 only has python3, py3_env is not needed
anymore.

What changes? saga and grass are optional dependencies not included in

"was" is past tense - so that's sorted out (not pushed yet though). And I
doubt that changing the release name would help with transifex ;)

The problem is that the spanish translation should be above 80%, but shows at
19% and is therefore automatically removed when pulling in the transifex update
into the new branch.

On the transifex side there are tons of translations that have a 101%
suggestion - which means that they match a previous translation that transifex
still has in memory - it apparently "just" lost, that that' the current
translation.

Not sure what happened and why it only affects the spanish translation - the
others seem ok.

Sandy from transifex support just replied, that she's going to take this to the
engineers for a closer look and keep me posted. hm.

Hi,

the apostrophe in the new release name was a little issue, but there's
another issue with transifex: for some reason the spanish translation
dropped below 35% and would be removed…

I'm currently trying to sort that out with transifex support…

I have pending commits for release-3_28, master (and a local release-3_30
branch). Please don't push for the time beeing.

Where is that quarantine rule? Is it tied into the backport bot?

In the good old days I'd apply my fixes to master also to the release branches,
once the showed to work in master and didn't produce additional complains from
users of the nightlies. And that ideally not shortly before the release so
people could still try the release nightlies.

The C++ API site is updated near to the end of the debian "nightly" builds.
Last round started Wed Nov 23 00:03:05 UTC 2022 and is still underway.

The previous started Sat Nov 19 21:26:11 UTC 2022 (manually triggered some time
after the still running "nightlies" from before the release finished) and ended
Tue Nov 22 12:11:18 UTC 2022 (long "night": 2d14h41m26s).

So the current state is from back then and will be updated once the "nightly"
finishes.

pyqgis however is updated independantly.

This is supposed to run from cygwin and not powershell.

That's Windows' find, the scripts expects a "regular" (GNU) find, which will be
available when run from cygwin.

And Windows >7 should still work. Just Windows <=7 does not work anymore.

And support for Windows 7 (and/or 32bit) was not dropped during the period of
the previous LTR, but after it expired - that why osgeo4w v1 and v2 were
maintained in parallel for a while.

It's redirected to several hosts - independant of the origin address. So you
might get better results just by retrying. Where did you actually download
from? US (download.osgeo.org, ftp.osuosl.org; Oregon State, US) or Europe
(qgis.org, norbit.de; both at Hetzner in Germany)?

Changed "current releases" to "currently supported releases" and added a link
on the bug reporting page to the roadmap
(https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Website/commit/46886162332431a8ccb4ed269deedee44046c6a5)

The user should verify that an issue is present in a current release or master.
That is the latest LTR and the latest release (and the previous LTR, if the
latest LTR is the latest release). Issues about older releases should not be
filed.

OSGeo4W has Qt 5.12.3 with the KDE patch collection now, and a bunch of updated
reverse dependencies + GDAL 3.4.3 + GDAL 3.5.0 (gdal-dev) with (geo)parquet
include some additional dependencies and qgis-dev (3.25 Nightly) built against
it.

No, their webinterface will just ignore you if you try. It has been that way
for several releases.

I asked transifex' support to delete shortly after the release of 3.22.5. They
promised to get back to me, once they do. But I think it takes longer than
usual this time.

I doubt that. I wonder why the quality is so bad. I would expect that most of
the translations are ok and only some are poor. Review can help with those,
but should not be necessary to get usable translations at all.

Are there more that poor translations above 35%?

Otherwise I would suggest to fix the portuguese translation instead - if
everything else fails by removing the bad ones and getting it below threshold.
Or is resetting it the better choice? That's will also get you C / en_US (or

Hm, but that contradicts the point of the LTR, doesn't it?

The LTR is about maintaining a branch for a year - and issuing a point release
every month with fixes - and not about getting the first release of the LTR
right (or the first after four month of the new LTR also beeing the current
release) and then sticking with that for a year.

If the point releases are not used anyway, there isn't any issue now.
Otherwise there should be repacking each month.

One point of the OSGeo4W update was also updating all dependencies - because
the previous one had some vulnerabilities - which also worries some
organizations - even if probably most - if not all - of them don't do any harm
if used from within QGIS.

Keeping the old versions, but still backporting fixes to everything those would
be another extra level of work.

Did we have any issues that were introduced by the actual new versions
themselves? I guess most were "just" packaging issues.

BTW we're not relying on fixed version (number)s on other platforms than
Windows either.

Re: [QGIS-Developer] [Qgis-psc] QGIS LTR releases -- is it time to pull the plug?

2021-11-16 Thread Jürgen E . Fischer
Hi Matthias,

On Tue, 16. Nov 2021 at 12:02:36 +0100, Matthias Kuhn wrote:
> I am very much in favor of evaluating what went wrong and drafting possible
> next steps to improve the situation.

Well, from my point of view there were a few updates late in the release that
started it.

OSGeo4W was using SIP 5 what was capabable of building the releases and master
- as long as both were using SIP's old build build system. But that was
discontinued with SIP 6.

So for distributions that only have SIP 6 QGIS's support of that had to added -
and was (thanks Sandro). But that broke the master build in OSGeo4W. To
address that I updated OSGeo4W to SIP 6 - which in turn - but not unexpectedly
- broke the LTR build.

But there was still enough time to work on that before the release. And I did
so by backporting the QGIS' SIP6 support of 3.22 to 3.16 - which apparently
worked as good as it was in 3.22. What I didn't know was that it wasn't
working well on 3.22 either. And it took a week after the release to become
clear. Still there were only few - if any -windows nightlies right before the
release to test.

In the week before the release there also was another big change in master's
SIP, that wasn't working on (the native MSVC) windows build at all and took
some discussion to resolve and revert. That took away more preparation time.
But still not enough to make the release impossible.

Meanwhile PROJ 8.2 was released and GDAL 3.4 was in sight. After the release
I started working on those updates.

When the SIP issues became apparent after the release, I applied the quick fix
(thanks Sandro) to the OSGeo4W qgis packages and quickly made a new MSI of
3.16.12.

After some more discussion we decided to better do a 3.16.13 release. Not sure
if it also already applied to the 3.16.12-2 MSI, but the 3.16.13 MSI was
already built with PROJ 8.2 although the rest of OSGeo4W was still using 8.1.
Not sure how that happened, but it did.

That is the apparent source of the new issue. Those issues were resolved last
week in OSGeo4W - by rebuilding their reverse dependencies against PROJ 8.2 and
GDAL 3.4. The MSI was not yet updated yet - mainly because the next release is
due friday anyway.

There were also issues with polish characters in the MSI, new GRASS packages
(7.8.6) somewhere in between (reintroducing the "untangle grass" issue) and new
GRASS packages in old OSGeo4W with a wrong set of VC libraries (also breaking
the
old OSGeo4W LTR builds on release). On Linux there was an issue with ubuntu
impish having SIP6 only and using a different compression (zstd) in the
packages - one that debian does (not yet?) use - so the build system there had
to be adapted to that. Some taking several build iterations to unfold.

And there's also a subtle poppler/GDAL issue where some PDFs are not displayed
- which I also tried to figure out. That's still there - everything will
hopefully solve itself with 3.16.14 (as it should be fine in OSGeo4W already).

So all in all many more unfortunate events than usual.

Only the 3.16.13 MSI is broken (not sure if 3.16.12-2 is affected). OSGeo4W
v2 was meanwhile fixed. All other platforms are not affected at all. The
next release is on friday and will also produce a fresh MSI.

I 'downgraded' the website to 3.16.11 and the website rebuild is ongoing.

Doing another MSI of 3.16.13 would be an option, but I guess as the 3.16.14 is
due on friday - it's probably good enough to just do that and sort it out
that way.

bbl. Heading to the office now…

BTW they could just run the included osgeo4w installer to see which version is
installed, perhaps even see whether it offers an update. And if that doesn't
work for some reason they could still look for qgis-ltr-3.16.12-4 in

SIP isn't broken, it's were our SIP-Bindings in 3.22.  That's meanwhile fixed

that issue.

To build master/3.22 SIP in OSGeo4W had to be updated to support SIP6. But
that is not supported by 3.16 at all. So I backported the SIP6-Support to 3.16
in the OSGeo4W v2 packaging - thereby also introducing unintentionally
introducing that SIP binding issue from 3.22. That also meanwhile fixes in
OSGeo4W v2.

The 3.16 binaries in old OSGeo4W are still built with SIP4 and therefore didn't
need those changes and are in turn unaffected. Same as the NSIS standalone
installers that are made from old OSGeo4W.

The MSI standalone installer are made from OSGeo4W v2 and were also updated
with the fixes binaries from OSGeo4W.

The affected versions were all of 3.22.0 and 3.16.12 only in OSGeo4W v2.

Hm, I don't. The affected windows packages are already fixed. People just
need to update to the latest packages. Doing another release wouldn't change
nothing more than the version number and trigger a lot of otherwise useless
rebuilds - even on platforms that were not even affected. And the next point
release is only two weeks away.

qgis-ltr-dev and qgis-rel-dev will be updated in the next round of nightlies.

osgeo4w v2 never used SIP4 and was updated to SIP6, when support for SIP5 was
broken in master.

This also made it necessary to backport the SIP6 changes to 3.16 in osgeo4w v2
as SIP5 doesn't have the sip executable anymore and only supports the
sip-build.

Looks like the SDK is incomplete:

set SETUPAPI_LIBRARY=%PF86%\Windows Kits\10\Lib\%VCSDK%\um\x64\SetupAPI.Lib
set DBGHLP_PATH=%PF86%\Windows Kits\10\Debuggers\x64

if not exist "%SETUPAPI_LIBRARY%" (
  echo SETUPAPI_LIBRARY not found

if not exist "%DBGHLP_PATH%\dbghelp.dll" (
  echo dbghelp.dll not found
  dir /s /b "%PF86%\dbghelp.dll" "%PF86%\symsrv.dll"
  goto error
)

So you apparently have SetupAPI.Lib, but not dbghelp.dll in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10

https://github.com/jef-n/QGIS/commits/workflows-msvc includes some updates to
INSTALL[0]. The merges for OSGeo4W v2 are still pending (at the time both ltr
and latest release were built for old and osgeo4w v2; now only the current ltr
is still built for old osgeo4w).

There is no geometry type constraint in Oracle, so you can have any geometry
type - even ones that don't yet exists. So you get one line for each existing
geometry type (point, line, area) and one where you have to select the geometry
type in case you want to add a not yet existing geometry type.

Same happens for GEOMETRY columns (instead limited to POINT, LINESTRING or
POLYGON) in postgres.

I asked on #debian-qt-kde on OFTC and they are apparently not planning to apply
the patch collection blindly, but probably would apply individual patches (of
the currently 222 qtbase and 33 in qt3d patches) that we need.

Which reminds me that the info panel is the only part that depends on qwtpolar.
So a potential UI modernization might also remove external/qwtpolar-1.1.1/,

I don't think so. The release itself is done with scripts/release.pl.

Merging stuff to master between the release time and the push of the release
commits/branches would be bad (esp. the translations take a while to pull and
push).

Committing new fixes to the fresh release branch could also be postponed a bit
before the packages are out - in case there have to be some packaging related
updates for stuff that pops up during packaging. Otherwise those fresh fixes
would also end up in the packages. Although that would not be actual harm -
probably right the opposite - but maybe unexpected.

Committing to the master branch right after the release is fine however.

Yes.

Now:

```
qgis-server-common:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:3.18.3+15buster-1
  Version table:
 1:3.18.3+15buster-1 500
buster's GDAL is too old for master, but not 3.18 - so I should have skipped
builds for >3.18 and not >=3.18…
Only for master the new repository is required - and in turn the new compiler.
For 3.16 or 3.18 you can stick with what's documented.  But you can also
switch.
That is not up-to-date as current master stopped building with the dependencies
of the current OSGeo4W.  3.16 and 3.18 still do, but master doesn't.
You can switch to dependencies from osgeo4w testing[0], that has the required
more
up-to-date dependencies.  You also need to switch the MSVC 2019 compiler.
The build recipes for osgeo4w testing are in [1].
Unfortunately I didn't yet get the git workflows builds[2] (or some
alternative) to fly (runs out of space even w/o caches and takes ages to do
so), so it's still done locally and documentation waits for a final path to
materialize.
What's in osgeo4w testing now is built locally from a cygwin env.
I'd say requiring volunteers to do anything they didn't volunteer for is
unfair.
Giving people who volunteered to write documentation new stuff to write about
doesn't fall into that category.
But requiring people who volunteered to write features to write documentation
OTOH does.
And as you said not all authors are paid for the feature.  But probably less
than there used to be as more and more hoops like this one make even little
contribution a big effort.
Not that I know.  UTSP.
The QOCISPATIAL driver was just developed (well, actually it's just an enhanced
version of Qt's QOCI driver) to allow QGIS to access Oracle database - and if
the GPL wouldn't forbid to link proprietary libraries, it would probably not
exists at all as the oracle provider could then interface OCI directly.   So
what QGIS doesn't need (or didn't need at the time) might not be there.
Same here.  The processing message about SAGA 7 should also be checked and be
removed if it's bogus.  Not really sure if it is.
And some more time to let people test with the new dependencies on Windows
No.  Just some quick notes: you just need to set OSGEO4W_REP to where the local
package repository should be placed, goto src/$package/osgeo4w and run
package.sh from
a cygwin shell.
That should fetch the sources, possibly patch them, create a local osgeo4w
install with it's build dependency, build the sources, package them and upload
them (unless you set OSGEO4W_SKIP_UPLOAD).
There's no list of expected cygwin packages yet and no automated triggering of
rebuilds of reverse dependencies.  It also expects an installed version of
Visual C++ 2019 in "Program Files".  The mingw env for GRASS should be set up
automatically.
If they are derived from GPL software they also have to be GPL - and most QGIS
The standalones are built from the osgeo4w packages - that means everything
qgis-full / qgis-ltr-full depends.  filegdb however is not included, but GDAL
has openfilegdb support builtin.
Why?  sid has the 3D extra headers.
Re: [QGIS-Developer] What happened to pywin32?
pywin32 is still included.  But apparently it doesn't work anymore.
I think it's because it modifies the PATH with it's .pth file (via site.py).
And that change happens before QGIS import handler is installed.
QGIS doesn't use PATH directly anymore, but initally calls AddDllDirectory for
all directories in PATH and records the current setting of PATH when QGIS'
import handler is installed.  Any changes to PATH from imports are detected and
AddDllDirectory is called accordingly.
That's apparently the only way to avoid DLLs in system32 to mask DLLs in PATH.
Unfortunately the changes to PATH through .pth happen after QGIS has
AddDllDirectory the initial directories, but before the directories are
recorded.  So on import of win32clipboard it thinks that the directories in
PATH were already fed to AddDllDirectory, which they weren't, doesn't call it
and the load fails.
Fixed in OSGeo4W by moving the DLLs from pywin32_system32 to a directory
already in PATH.
GDAL was updated to 3.1.4rc2 and should be picked up by new builds.
