Re: [Qgis-developer] Silence "Plugin approval notification"

2016-03-31 Thread Neumann, Andreas
Hi Jürgen,

I agree that an RSS feed would be more appropriate than an announcement
on either the developer or user mailing lists. But also then, the RSS
feed should contain more than just the plugin name and link to be
useful.

You are also right, that the QGIS plugin manager already contains a list
of new plugins - and dev/users can search on the plugin website.

Moving the plugin approval notification mail to qgis-user would probably
annoy even more users than on the qgis-developer mailing list and would
probably result in a lot of unsubscriptions.

So +1 from me to get rid of these messages. There are enough ways to
stay informed about new plugins (the plugin manager and the plugin
webpage). If that's not enough, the RSS feed idea or the QGIS blog would
be a better place to publish information on new plugins and their major
updates.

For notification about new plugins that could probably be useful. But then
it's more useful for users than developers. So it should at least be moved to
qgis-user. But for that a RSS feed on plugins.q.o might be better. Doesn't
the plugin manager also have a opt-in notification mechanism for new plugins?

For the purpose to avoid duplication of plugins it seems quite useless to me.
People intending to write a plugin should be capable to search in the plugin
manager or on plugins.q.o if there is already something similar they can use
instead or base their work on - and if they aren't, they probably didn't manage
to subscribe to qgis-developer either. And even if they did, they probably
already missed the approval of the plugin and are still doomed to reinvent it.

Is there anyone that actually finds this mails useful? AFAICT so far there
were only voices that didn't find it useful or just thought it might be useful
to others - but no one said "keep it, I use it".

Hi,

I agree with Tom.

Either the mails contain more information or they should be moved to a
separate mailing list.

It is a waste of time having to click on every plugin link just to find
out what the plugin does.

But I (and I imagine most people) am not going to click through, because of

IIRC this notification was also added to prevent some plugin developer's
bad habit to send an mail to this list on every new plugin or version they
published.

Why on qgis-developer? Shouldn't this be a least on qgis-user to also let

I don't care much about these messages, my procmail moves them out of sight.

agree with Paolo and Anita,

we recently changed this, so it was more clear who was approving and
which plugins are being approved. The idea is also to make the dev
community a little more aware of which plugins popup etc

@Marco: the problem is that plugins are not in 1 repo (as they are in
separate owner repo's), so not other way to have a little sight on this
then in this way.

one could argue that a "developer" that does not take the time to check
what is already in the repo will not take the time to go through tons of
emails to see what has been approved.

IMHO this is neither efficient nor adequate for this particular purpose.
In comparison with the nice search engine on plugins.qgis.org which
supports tags and descriptions and can be used at an appropriate time,
this channel here does seem to be a rather badly targetted tool with the
side effect of deteriorating the SNR.

I'll add more noise to the topic...

If we follow this logic we should keep only one list and not many (usr,
dev, ux).
I don't see the reason of not creating one dedicated to plugin approval,
testing, whatever.
If one wants to keep track of it, he can easily subscribe.

Hi Matthias,
IMHO it is useful to know what's going on. We all hate useless traffic,
but it happens fairly often that people redo already exixting plugins
