I would be happy with that layout.

I love those new icons Denis!

So, going with your suggestion of having Manage Layers toolbar on left, and
Plugins toolbar filling space to right of Help toolbar, the layout would
look like this [0] (using latest icons from Denis [1]).

+1 for this as default layout.

Couple of things need some work:

* The New Spatialite Layer needs a new icon, and its icon added to the
toolbar

* When all other core plugins are turned on (that have a add or new layer
function) it looks confusing, like this [2] (after a restart). To fix, just
need to ensure the Oracle and SQL Anywhere (also needs new icon) icons go
before the W*S icons and the New GPX Layer goes before the Remove Layer
icon. This way, the icon grouping continues to make sense: Add, New, Remove.

* Help icon looks a little too dominant, or possible too far off-style.

Re: [Qgis-developer] Toolbar and Panel defaults

2013-07-11 Thread Nathan Woodrow
So it is possible to get the toolbar inside the map canvas area by changing
the central widget to a QMainWindow and adding the toolbar to that.

So you end up with:

QMainWindow (QGIS Main Window)
 - QWidget (CentralWidget)
 -- QLayout
 QMainWindow
 -- QToolbar
 -- MapCavnas

http://i.imgur.com/85ggkiF.png

However you loss the ability to dock out side of the map canvas, and there
is a strange rendering issue with the toolbar. It could work with some
magic but I think it would be pretty hacky.

I'm not a friend of a toolbar on the right side, because it's too far away
when the Sextante toolbox is displayed.
I propose to put the layer toolbar on the left side. This will feel quite new
for most users, but it makes sense to have it at the side of the layers panel
and the browser which also has an "add layer" functionality.
+1 for activating the plugin toolbar filling empty space.

Don't agree. I can't see this getting removed and if they were it would
hurt user experience more the help it I feel. I'm an experienced user and I
use the toolbar all the time, it's faster then navigating a menu which is
why they are there.

Re: [Qgis-developer] Toolbar and Panel defaults

2013-07-11 Thread Alister Hood
Hi guys,
I agree with Antonio on both counts. With the layers panel on the left it
seems more natural to have the navigation toolbar on the right side of the
window.
And yes, if it is possible to have a titlebar on floating toolbars that would
make it much easier to close toolbars you don't want (sometimes it isn't at all
obvious which toolbar you are looking at, so you have to go through turning
them on and off one at a time until you find the right one).

Also, I think this has been suggested previously, but personally I don't think
the File or the Manage Layers toolbars should be on by default. They aren't
like some of the other toolbars which you need to frequently switch between
different tools, they contain functions which users naturally look for in the
right place in the menu, and in the case of the Manage Layers toolbar I suspect
that even for experienced users it is much faster to find the right tool in the
layer menu than it is to figure out which icon in the toolbar is the one they
want.

Regards,
Alister

Could we add the possibility to close toolbars by undocking them and hitting an

That's a very good point. What about the Navigation toolbar on the right, with
the Plugin toolbar filling the empty space at right on the first row of
horizontal toolbars?

Here's my reasoning. Nav tools are quickly accessible, and when a new user
downloads/installs a plugin, there is already space to show it (assuming that
plugin loads a tool button into the Plugins toolbar). Then the user can move
toolbars to their liking.

Any other ideas?

Didn't know that. Updated the script to support composer UI defaults.

Couple of other ideas comments, too:

* Currently there are no side toolbars by default. Many apps utilize the left
side toolbar for critical tools. To me, such tools in a GIS app are the canvas
navigation tools. So whenever I to an initial setup of QGIS, I always put the
Map Navigation toolbar on the left.

* Similarly, I always place the Plugins toolbar on the right side. There is
currently a bug that sets that toolbar to not be shown on a default install
(that should be fixed).

I would like to hear feedback on those two suggestions for default side
toolbars. Following your suggestions (and mine), the default window would look
similar to this (on Mac) [0].

+1 for removing Advanced Digitizing toolbar as a default, as all of the
functions are available in the Edit menu already. If needed, the user can show
that toolbar.

Another major layout issue is what the layout looks like after turning on all
core plugins [1]. Then, what it looks like when all those plugin toolbars are
shown [2]. This needs some work.

IMHO Layer order is an advanced feature and should be hidden by default -
novice users are heavily confused by the fact that the legend order and the
render order can be managed separately.

I think on the right is fine. To me that feels better that all the way over
on the left.

It's a real bugger that we can't make Qt dock the toolbars inside something
else, seems you are constrained to QMainWindow.

In case anyone missed it: scripts/mkuidefaults.py produces

So updating it should be easy, once it's decides what should be the default.

Not sure if the data contains pixel coordinates and if the screen resolution

agreed. as for the rest:

* Browser on, tabbed with Layers
* all Print composer toolbars in one row
* no strong opinion about placement of Label

As for the Toolbar Advanced Digitizing, I'm unsure about hiding it: newbies
could
easily miss important tools. It would be good to hide all digitizing tools
unless
digitizing is on.

Thanks for raising this.

afaik

the layer order actually is hiding but the "control rendering order
checkbox is enabled"
This is quite confusing for an user.

I guess the better is hide and "control rendering order disable" by default.

IMHO Layer order is an advanced feature and should be hidden by default -
novice users are heavily confused by the fact that the legend order and the
render order can be managed separately.
