It was not only reverted because of bugs, it was mainly because some

will be good to have a QEP about it.

Re: [Qgis-developer] Vertex editor and CAD digitizing mode

2016-01-14 Thread Denis Rouzaud

Hi Marco,

Looking at the discussion [0], I don't see strong opinions against this,
but indeed the node was not usable, many of its features where missing.
Here is the list of remaining things to do to bring it at a usable state
at that time [1].

While discussing refactoring of the node tool for circular strings,
which went without any QEP, I was asking to use the new snapping API and
to integrate it in the advanced digitizing tools. I thought we agree at
that time.

I find a real pity that such a big change was not integrated into
existing effort. Now, it will make things even more complicated.

I admit that, one year earlier, the first discussion did not yield to a
solid agreement [2]. Although, this is the kind of behavior that is not
really easy to speak about until you really tested it. I have a solid
belief that click-click is the right approach since:

- people using it find it better
- other QGIS tools behave the same
- it allows integration of CAD tools, cancelation of current editing
action with right-click, and avoids digitizing errors.

We had the same type of discussion when we remove the fact that right
click was adding a last node to the digitized line or polygon.
Some were strongly against any change, but from now it looks much more
natural.

So, yes, effort will start again to make the node tool more integrated
into existing framework and workflows.
Although, it will be brought to QGIS 3, so it might be easier for such a
change.

Best regards,

Denis

No, old behavior should be brought back:
- when you click on a node, it moves but you can delete directly
(so no
changes in terms of click)
- selecting several nodes should put them in pre-selection mode
(hence
you can delete it).

I am not sure that QGIS bug fixing program is the right way to go.

It wouldn't be fair that an unfinished paid work is pushed to master and
later on the group sponsors the end of the development.

I suggest to wait for Marco's answer regarding the schedule for fixing the
node tool.

I think that waiting again 2 weeks is a bit long as this tool is crucial in
QGIS. If he can't make it, then the solution of paid bug fixing by another
dev can be discussed, but that's a bit odd to me.

Hi,

Marco agreed to participate in our paid bug fixing program that should
start after feature freeze (which - according to our website - is on
September 26. If PSC votes for him - he can then work several days
dedicated to bug fixing.

Marco is traveling the next two weeks (FOSS4G South Korea) - but I
assume - after he is back, he can continue working on the
digitizing/geometry issues.

There's a long blocker list relating to regressions in the map tools, eg:

- deleting a node: the rubber band is not removed
- deleting a node: when finished, the next node should be pre-selected
(this pre-selection should by synchro with the table view selection
model).
- right-click should cancel the edition of the node (but keeps it pre-selected)
- for point layers, there is no visual feedback of the point being
moved (no rubberband)
- editing in table view: changes should be applied to the rubberband
on keypress (not on editing finished), and when editing is finished it
should ends the digitizing (clear rubberband)
( all from http://hub.qgis.org/issues/13276)
- split tool errors: http://hub.qgis.org/issues/13273 and
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/13347
- inability to add parts to null geometries - refs
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/12885

I tried to do some digitising in master last week and honestly it was
unusable for geometry editing. Lots of regressions and unexpected
behaviour compared to the smth editing machine that 2.8 is! I
understand master is a work-in-progress, but can we get some
confirmation of which issues will be addressed prior to 2.14?
Marco/Denis? If there's no funding to address these then I think they
should be prioritised for the 2.14 bug fixing period.

All these issues shall be fixed prior to the release.
Marco, do you have any schedule regarding this?

Mmm, nice addition though!
But maybe it lacks an option to not use it :-)

Another observation: when I create a line, and use the nodetool to edit
one line, after clicking on a node, it immediately 'sticks' to the mouse
and moves. In 2.8 the vertex only get's 'selected' and after this
selecting you can move it. Is this intended behaviour?

2015-09-13 Thread Saber Razmjooei
The new changes assume:
 - User always wants to move a vertex
 - Only one single vertex is selected

But in general, the node tool is also heavily used for deleting, adding and
moving vertices. With the new behaviour it is a bit confusing for users how the
other tasks can be done, when it gets automatically locked on a single node.

Cheers,
Saber

Yes it is. Although, there will be another pre-selection state which will
correspond to 2.8 behavior.
Although, on first click it will free the node.
The idea is that you don’t need to keep mouse button pressed while moving the
node to allow using advanced digitising.

Marco has still some work to do in the node tool, you can follow discussion
here:
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/13276

Regarding the table view, I don’t know if Marco will allow disabling it. At
least, it would be nice to just hide it.

Personally for me unless we can get the whole thing nice and smooth I
really think the old click-drag still should stay as default and the
click-click mode + tools is added to ctrl modifier. I know it adds more
complexity but I don't think "move" is the default action we should take on
a node unless we are told that is what the user is wanting to do. I also
understand the desire to be more cad like and add more control on the
drawing tools but unless done right it's going to give people a bad
experience.

No, old behavior should be brought back:
- when you click on a node, it moves but you can delete directly (so no
changes in terms of click)
- selecting several nodes should put them in pre-selection mode (hence
you can delete it).

At the risk of stating the obvious, selecting multiple nodes (to move or
delete those) has to come back. I do lots of digitizing and shipping 2.12
in its current state would be a very significant regression.
