Dear Richard,

Thank you very much for your quick response. I followed this procedure many
times but unfortunately I gοt null values. Attached you can find the files that
I used (two different tiff maps-I use one map each time- and one csv file with
the coordinates). I can't find out if there's a problem with my files or
something I'm not doing right in the process.

Thank you.

Warm regards,

setting/specifying the X, Y and Z fields (as required)

3. This will result in a Point Dataset being added to the Canvas, with

4. In the Processing Toolbox search bar, type “sample” and then select

a. Input layer set to the Point Dataset

b. Raster Layer set to the Raster you want to analyse

c. Output column Prefix is handy if you have multiple datasets you want
to sample, as you can change this for each subsequent sample.

d. Sampled you can specify a Location for your output dataset, or you can

I hope that clarifies things,

Hi all,
I have two DEMs, one is the whole USA, the other is a watershed. They obviously
have two different raster Min/Max levels, based on elevation. When I adjust the
watershed DEM to my liking, I then right click, copy the style, and right click
the USA DEM to paste the style. So far, so good, I did this a thousand times in
the past without a problem. Now, though, when I adjust anything in the USA DEM,
it reverts right back to the old Min/Max. Anybody else have this issue and what
do you think is going on?

Re: [Qgis-user] RASTER RESOLUTION REDUCING

2024-05-14 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Nuno,
As usual there are a number of ways to do this. Grass: r.resamp.stats as Em
suggested would work, but might I also suggest the Warp tool, based on
gdal_warp.
This can be found by going to the Menu bar select Raster, Projections and Warp.

Parameters:

Input Layer
Set this to the Raster you want to resample

Source/Target CRS
If you’re not transforming your dataset to another CRS then you can leave these
alone, but you can also set these to the value of the Raster CRS
Resampling method to use
As you are looking for the average of the Pixel values, you can select Average
here.

No Data value for output Bands:
Set if required

Output file resolution……:
This is the one of most interest to you, here you can set the resolution of the
output to 2500

Reprojected:
Specify the Location and Filename that you want the new Dataset to have, you
can leave it blank if you like for a Temporary file to be created.

Hope this helps!
Kind Regards,

Richard

Hi Sibylle,
To extract the Bioregions, I suggest you utilise the option Selected features
only which is a tick box below, where you select Mask layer. All you need to do
is select, on the map canvas, the bioregion you want to extract.

QGIS is capable of loading Tiff's I use them exclusively in any Raster work I
do. The virtual raster is just an
easy way for you to merge/mosaic the raster's (10-12 Raster's) together into a
single raster.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Subject: Re: [Qgis-user] merging parts from various raster files

Hello Frank and Richard
,
I have 10-12 raster files (figure 1, .tif files), they all look the same and
cover the entire country with no definition of the biogeregions.
Second there is the shape file defining the biogeoregions (figure 2, different
colors).

- Probably I first need to extract the different biogeoregions out
from each raster file or define the linkage between the raster files the the
biogeoregions in the shape file. However, raster - crop raster based on layer
mask extracts the entire mask (entire country) not the different biogeoregions.
- Furter I may delete all the data in the raster files not needed:
e.g. in raster 1 just data on biogeo 1, but not the other biogeoregions, in
raster 2, data on biogeo 2, but not the other biogeregions. By doing so there
will be no overlap, as each raster file consists only one biogregions.
- I am not sure about the virtual raster, because it is not possible
to import .tif files.
- Then I may just use the "merge" function - merging each bioregions.

Background: postprocessing of a model output. It was not possible to run the
model only for biogeoregion 1 (with input data from biogeoregion 1) , bioregion
2 (with input data from bioregion 2) etc. It was necessary to model the entire
country with input data from bioregion 1 etc.

Kind regards
Sibylle

Hello Sybille,

I am not sure if I understand your problem correctly. I assume, you have a
mosaic of raster files (that overlap) and you want to create a single raster
file for statistical analysis. In my opinion, the easiest way to achieve that
is to create a virtual raster (VRT) and either use that for stats or create a
new raster file from the VRT. You can find the tool in the processing toolbox.
With the tool you can even define the resolution, if mixed, and how the VRT
should be resampled.

Dear community

I am working with QGIS 3.34 (Prizren) and would like to merge region 1 from
raster (.tif) file 1 and region 2 from raster file 2, and...
For sure I will need to use raster-miscellaneous-merge.

My question is related to the pre-processing of the input raster files.
- The 12 raster files all have the same coordinate system.
- The raster files are fully overlapping (the entire country).
- The region is not defined per se in the raster file, but in an additional
shape file (biogeo.shp).
- For sure I can carry out some zonal statistics using raster and shape
file, but to merge the regions I need all the pixels form a regions as input
file for the merging process. This process is more than just selecting
regions or cropping. Do you have any suggestions?

Kind regards
Sibylle

Hi Simon,
Not an IT person, but there are a number of formats, supported by gdal which
don't, by default install. This is due to them requiring a separate licencing
agreement.
You will need to manually install these, in the setup app, by using the
Advanced install and under Select Packages, Libs select dgal-mrsid.
You can use the Search to help find it and other formats like ECW (gdal-ecw).
Hope that helps,

Richard

\\url.com\apps\qgis\_Deployment\Repo\

The installation works using the setup.exe graphical app.

Any ideas?

Hi Richard,
You can indeed load others.
From the layer properties, select the style button, usually bottom left. Then
select Load Styles, all other styles in the database will be listed there. You
can select any other ones you set up for that layer from there.
Kind Regards,

Richard.

Hi Chiz,
The only thing I can think of is Split Vector Layer (Vector => Data Management)
that will allow you to split your Layer by attribute, outputting a DXF for each
layer.
The only issue is that you will have a series of separate Layers which you will
have to manually merge into a single dxf file.

One other consideration would be, splitting the single layer by attribute in
QGIS as separate Layers and then exporting the Project.
Sorry I can't be of more help, there's probably a way, using Python, to carry
out the split and write out a single DXF, but I can't help you there.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Hi,
One solution is to use Warp, found under Raster --> Projections --> Warp
(reproject)
This will allow you to specify a resolution and also change the file type.

Subject: [Qgis-user] Amal Kar - India - Batch conversion of files for raster
layer format from geotiff to idrisi, and simultaneously from a higher pixel
resolution to a lower one.

Dear Community Members,
I am currently trying to make use of a series of Raster data files from Modis
satellite sensors that are available in Geotiff format (.tif) and in the pixel
resolution of 500-m.
I downloaded the files from a USGS website, and wanted to convert each file
into an Idrisi raster format (16 bit integer elevation data in .RST & .RDC
files), and in 1-km pixel resolution.
I am using the batch convert utility in my QGIS (ver. 3.18; Zurich) within the
GDAL Toolbox, especially its "Translate (Convert Format)" utility under "Raster
Conversion".
While this utility converts all the files from .tif to .rst & .rdc very quickly
and accurately, it does not have any scope of changing the pixel resolution
(i.e., from pixel width & height of 0.00417 arc degrees for 500 m pixels to the
width & height of 0.00833 arc degrees for the desired 1-km pixels).
When i do the conversion of files individually by opening each .tif raster file
and then exporting each ("Save as") to idrisi format, it opens a new window of
"Save Raster Layer as", where the options are for changing the
"Resolution", both horizontal and vertical.
However, changing each data file through this process, especially when i am
dealing with a few hundreds of daily satellite data files, is very cumbersome.
There must be some clickable tool hidden within the Tool Box, which i am too
naive to understand and pick up (i am NOT computer-savvy, although i use it
more often for digital analysis of my earth surface data in GIS).
I shall be highly grateful if you can lead me to the appropriate tool in my
QGIS (ver. 3.18; Zurich), which can be easily followed.
Thanking You for Your patience, and with Kind Regards,
amal kar.

Re: [Qgis-user] How to convert qml style file from version 3.28.6 to 3.16.14

2024-01-08 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Jaume,
I'm making the assumption that your styling is saved in the Project File and
not as a Style for the Layer itself.
Might I suggest that you create a default style for each layer, this can easily
be done by going to the Layer Properties and clicking on the Style button on
the bottom Left and selecting Save as Default. This will result in a default
style for the Layer so it doesn't matter what version of QGIS you use, or
indeed what project you load the layer into, it will use the default style. You
can also manually do this, by saving the style with the same name as the
dataset.

The same can be done for all layers, Vector or Raster. It will even do it for
PostGIS Layers, saving the style in a new table called style in the public
schema in your Database.

I hope the above helps.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Subject: [Qgis-user] How to convert qml style file from version 3.28.6 to
3.16.14

For reasons that are not relevant to this discussion I have two versions of
QGIS installed on my Desktop (3.16.14-Hannover & 3.28.6-Firenze).

I have realised that when a project is saved at 3.28.6-Firenze version, the
symbology styles are lost if opened with QGIS 3.16.14-Hannover. I've browsed
for solutions, and I read that that's an issue since version 3.22, but I
couldn't find a way to solve it.

Does anyone know how to save the layer stlyles on 3.28.6-Firenze so they can
be recovered on 3.16.14-Hannover? (Maybe a version conversor, or a QML file
conversor)

Many thanks in advance,

Jaume

Re: [Qgis-user] Reselect Features

2023-11-17 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Michael,
In addition to what Nyall said, might I suggest another possible method for you
doing it.

Instead of selecting and deselecting, how about you use a virtual field? To
sort/filter the river names.
1) Using the field calculator, create a virtual field and call it,
"filter" and set all values to 1 or 0, based on something like... CASE WHEN
river_name = 'SomeRiverName' THEN 1 ELSE 0 END (expression may have some
errors)
2) Style your Layer using the "filter" value as your classification and
set 0 as Invalid and 1 as Valid.

You should then be able to see only the geometries with the valid name and spot
the gaps.
If instead of selecting and deselecting, you use the filter column to edit the
filter attribute to 1 or 0 you can add or remove features until you have what
you want. You can also set the attribute table to display only what is visible
on canvas, which may also help.
Hopefully the above helps
Kind Regards,

Richard

Hi Grant,
The NoDATA values, if not specified are calculated from the source rasters. For
RGB imagery, this typically is either 0 or 255, unless you are using an alpha
band.
You can though remove the NoDATA tag from the raster. I know of two of ways to
do this.

1. Use gdal_edit with the -unsetnodata, which will modify the existing
dataset.

2. Use gdal_translate to copy the raster but by using the -a_nodata and
setting it to none, to remove the NoDATA tag

I would suggest if using the first one, that you make a backup of the raster,
just in case.
I hope that helps!
Kind Regards,

Richard

Hi Rajesh,
The SCP Plugin is now running using a new Python Library called
"remotior-sensus", which you will have to load yourself, as it doesn't form
part of the standard list of QGIS Python Library's.

Further details and instillation instructions can be found

Re: [Qgis-user] SCP Plug-In Question

2023-10-05 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Molly,
As you are aware, the SCP uses the polygons to create classifications. As you
have already got this, you could just try Reclassify by Table.
I have not tested this for your specific requirements, but you can add in rows
for each classification and specify your ranges.
I’m not sure of the format of the USGS signatures, nor have I any data to hand
to test.
I hope this helps,

Kind Regards,

Richard.

Subject: [Qgis-user] SCP Plug-In Question

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to import a file containing spectral
signatures to classify an image using the SCP Plug-in? I have tried importing
spectral signatures from the USGS library, but it seems like I still need to
draw a polygon on my image to do any kind of classification. Is there a way I
can carry out spectral signature classification without manually drawing
polygons and creating that training data myself?

Thanks!

Re: [Qgis-user] Combine raster bands in Graphical Modeller

2023-10-03 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Grant,
The syntax is as follows...

For three separate single band Images

-A input1.tif --A_band=1 -B input2.tif --B_band=1 -C input3.tif --C_band=1
...

For a single raster multiple bands...

-A input1.tif --A_band=1 -B input.tif --B_band=2 -C input.tif --C_band=3
..

I hope that helps and hope the process works!
Kind Regards,

Richard

Hi Jeremy,
Garth is indeed right. MrSID is not open source, therefore it's not installed
by default.
Thankfully it's easy to install, I can only give you instructions for Windows
though.

1) Open OSGeo4W Setup
2) Select Advanced Install
3) Install from Internet
4) Keep clicking Next until you get to Select Packages
5) In the search bar Type Mr and you should see the list drop to just Libs.
When you expand on this you will see the GDAL drivers for MrSID
6) It will say Skip, if you click on this it will change to the current
version.
7) Click next and it will then go through the setup process. You will be
required to accept the Licencing Agreement, but once finished you will be able
to use MrSID format.

I hope that helps.
Kind Regards,

Richard.

Re: [Qgis-user] Does QGIS require units "m" for the projection coordinate variables in a netCDF/CF file?

2023-09-15 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Thomas,
I’m open to correction on this, but meters would generally be the default unit
used in GIS, when dealing with metric datasets.
What units you use to measure on your Map Canvas or store as attribution is
then a different thing.

I had a look for the EPSG codes for EASE2 but all I could get was
EPSG:6931
If you look at the units there you can see meters as the UoM.
I hope that helps,

Richard.

Subject: [Qgis-user] Does QGIS require units "m" for the projection coordinate
variables in a netCDF/CF file?

Dear QGIS community,

We recently released a number of sea-ice climate data records stored in
netCDF/CF files.
An example file is
here:

Our files use a polar equal area projection (EASE2) and the x / y axis values
are given with units "km" (kilometers):

double xc(xc) ;
xc:axis = "X" ;
xc:units = "km" ;
xc:long_name = "x coordinate of projection (eastings)" ;
xc:standard_name = "projection_x_coordinate" ;
double yc(yc) ;
yc:axis = "Y" ;
yc:units = "km" ;
yc:long_name = "y coordinate of projection (northings)" ;
yc:standard_name = "projection_y_coordinate"

When opening these in QGIS, they are placed correctly on the map, but the
message "Unkown CRS" appears in the lower-right corner.

By manipulating our files, we could get QGIS to recognize the correct CRS.

ncap2 -s 'xc=xc*1000f;yc=yc*1000f' infile.nc
outfile.nc
ncatted -O -a units,xc,m,c,"m" outfile.nc
ncatted -O -a units,yc,m,c,"m" outfile.nc

The NCO commands above change the x / y axis variables to units "m" (meters).

The CF
convention
does not impose that x / y axis variables are given with unit meters, and
shows several examples using units "km". But this is apparently an issue for
QGIS.

Can someone please confirm that QGIS requires "meters" for these variables, and
comment if this is a desired feature or if I should open a bug report at github?

All the best,
Thomas

[Qgis-user] FW: Problem with Georeferences on AutoCAD version

2023-09-01 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Javier,
DWG files are proprietary and can have changes between versions. For this
reason, AutoCAD allows users to save there drawings to various versions
including.. 2018, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2004, 2000 and R14...

I've found when sending CAD data to 3rd parties that saving to an older DWG
format is easier for 3rd party software to use. Usually when sending DWG I
would use "AutoCAD 2000/LT2000 Drawing (*.dwg)" as my preferred output format
and the same for DXF (AutoCAD 2000/LT2000 DXF (*.dxf))
Easiest solution is to go back to source of the CAD files and have them resave
out to a pre-2018 version for you. Alternately there are a number of Free CAD
software out there that can take in DWG, which should allow you to save it to
an older version..though with post 2018 versions, they may have the same
issues..
I hope this clarifies things a little.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Subject: [Qgis-user] Problem with Georeferences on AutoCAD version

Good morning,
Using QGIS in version 3.28.9 and version 3.32.1 I have had the following
problem.
When importing a .dwg file generated by AutoCAD, the application is not able to
import the file in versions later than 2018.
How could I import a file from a more current version?
Knowing that most AutoCAD users use current versions with the latest tools, I

1. Crear un nuevo Proyecto

Re: [Qgis-user] Georeference DSM files in QGIS Using Georeferencer

2023-07-28 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi All,
It appears that, when you georeference an image which already contains
reference information it in effect applies a shift to the outputs.
One solution might be one of the options suggested
here.
The one which looks best suited for Georeferencing data wich already has a CRS
applied, would appear to me to be..

gdal_translate -co PROFILE=BASELINE -co TFW=YES dem.tif dem_clean.tif

It seems to reset the GeoTiff back to just a Tiff, from there you should be
able to georeference it easy enough.
Hope that helps!
Kind Regards,

Richard

I had similar issues in 2021 trying to use the georeferencer on tiff files that
already had a crs assigned.
I did not resolve it at the time, just found a workaround, I wonder if it is
still the same issue.
Seemed like QGIS was picking up the control points in the image as spatial
coordinates, then treating them as pixel coordinates (or vice versa).

Alexis RL on this list said a proposed fix was up, but I never tested it.

Subject: [Qgis-user] Georeference DSM files in QGIS Using Georeferencer

I am trying to measure the amount of sediment captured in several analog beaver
dams on a small wash in northern Utah.

We flew the site with a drone and collected images that provided us with an
orthomosaic, point cloud, and DSM (digital surface model) of the wash. Ground
control points were put out and the images and elevation models came into QGIS
accurately (no rectification was needed). This flight was before the analog
beaver dams were installed (2021).

We flew the same site last month and produced orthomosaic, point cloud, and
DSM. However, we were not able to put out ground control so we needed to
rectify the images in QGIS so they would align with the 20213 imagery and
models. We were able to align the orthomosaic using Georeferencer ( 3.28.2).
We have not been able to rectify the DSM.

To attempt to rectify the DSM we used the same control points as used for the
orthomosaic (the surface model was aligned with the orthomosaic). This
produces a file but its location was out of the mapping area and the elevation
data was no longer correct. We also used the 4 corners of the DSM for the
control points in Georeferencer (these corners are the same corner extents as
the rectified orthomosaic. This also produced a geotiff somewhere on earth
with no elevation data.

We also used the plugin Freehand Raster Georeferencer by using the 2 point
method (1 point being the LL corner and the second point being the UR corner.
The rectified orthomosaic that was produced the same time the DSM was made was
used as the base map. Again the produced file (png) was somewhere on earth but
not in the correct location and the elevation data was corrupt.

I would appreciate and help with rectifying DEM and DSM files.

Thanks

Re: [Qgis-user] draw polygon

2023-07-25 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Salvatore,
You could try:

1. Selecting/Highlighting Polygon 1, which should also highlight the area
you want to cut into area 4.

2. Using the Split Features tool, you can then create a cutline to clip
it successfully, something like what’s shown below in green, should work.

The polygons 2 and 3 shouldn’t be altered, as the Split feature tool will only
alter the Selected/Highlighted Polygon 1

[cid:image001.png@01D9BEEB.9C9A7320].

Hope that helps.

Re: [Qgis-user] Uninstalling QGIS

2023-06-13 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
My Steps...

1)Use the OSGeo4W Installer to uninstall everything
2)Delete the OSGeo4w Folder
3) Delete the QGIS folders in C:\Users\...SomeUserName...\AppData\Roaming\QGIS

Do a restart of the computer, which should clear most of the stuff.
Then you can do a fresh Install if you require.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Re: [Qgis-user] DXF Export symbolLayer

2023-06-12 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Simon,
Apologies, I didn't quite understand what you were trying to do. So let's start
from the beginning again.
Thank you for sending on a sample, it helps greatly to understand what you are
trying to do. Im still not 100% on what you are trying to achieve, so I have
included two separate examples based on your data.

In this first example, I will assume you are just trying to output the Layer as
a DXF with symbols and styling as you have them shown on the canvas, this can
simply be done by...

1. Selecting Project from the Menubar then Import/Export - Export Project
to DXF

2. In the next window set the Save As field set the Location you want
your DXF along with giving it a name.

3. Symbology Scale This will depend on what scales the DXF is being
printed out at, I have set 250 for the example

4. CRS, I have kept it the same as your Project

5. Layer This is the Layers you want to export, in this case sqq_subset

6. If you are only exporting only what's in Canvas view tick Export
features intersecting the current map extent, otherwise untick this to export
whole Layer

7. The only other thing I would tick in Export Labels as MTEXT if you
have labels you want in your outputs.

8. Click OK

Now if you want a DXF with two layers, Grenzpunkt and Others? You will need to
split your single Layer into multiple layers. For the purposes of this I will
assume were going for the two you have styled.

I don't know why I can't add actual columns, only virtual only seems to be
allowed

Ok, so first thing to remember is DXF is not a smart dataset, so we need to
dumb down your data a little.
To do this, we need to split the dataset into two layers, one for Grenzpunkt
and one for Others
So firstly we need to categorise all data into the Layers we want (Grenzpunkt
and Others), to do this we do something similar to what we done before. We
create a column let's call it "sgg_subset" and into this we can use the
following formula

CASE WHEN "TYP" = 20 THEN 'Grenzpunkt'
ELSE 'Others'
END

Next we use the Split vector layer tool to create however many layers we want,
in our case two. We use our layers attribute as the Unique ID field, making
sure the Add prefix to filenames is ticked (what we called our column) or
unticked, as you require. You can now specify the Output file type and the
Output directory. You can now click Run

Once this is completed, load you're newly created Layers into the Project and
style as required.
Now we can export to DXF using the tool in the first example. The difference
being we want the ONLY newly created individual layers ticked in the Layer box

If you want to improve how the styling, symbology is output, you will need to
work on the QGIS Style, modifying it to get the desired output in DXF.

Any of the steps above can be modified to suit the outputs you want.
I have attached a zip file with the updated project and the output DXF
examples, I hope it helps.
Regards,

Richard

Subject: AW: DXF Export symbolLayer

Hi Richard,

thank you for your support.

I have added a (virtual) attribute 'RefName' with a similar CASE WHEN
statement. But I don't see how this should change the DXF-output.

Some information:

  * I have a point layer that I want to export to a DXF-file using the
native:dxfexport algorithm.
  * This layer has a categorized renderer.
  * For the DXF export, I also set a field ("sgg_code" is my case) to split
the features into several DXF-layers.
  * Now I also have a field "RefName".
  * The RefName corresponds with the expression used for the categorized
rendering.
  * And the RefName does NOT match the field "sgg_code" used for the
DXF-split.
  * I want to use the RefName (or labels set in categorized renderer) values
instead of symbolLayer0, symbolLayer1, ...
I have attached a simple project with the point layer.

Simon

Re: [Qgis-user] DXF Export symbolLayer

2023-06-09 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Simon,
You don't mention the field name in QGIS, but in the example below, I will use
"TEST"
Create a new field, giving it a name, it can be "RefName" if you like, you can
then create an expression like

CASE WHEN " TEST " ='symbolLayer0' THEN 'SomeOtherStringA'
WHEN " TEST " ='symbolLayer1' THEN 'SomeOtherStringB'
END

This should look at the "TEST" Attribute and where it has 'symbolLayer0' it
will output 'SomeOtherStringA' and where "TEST" is 'symbolLayer1' it will
output 'SomeOtherStringB'
When its complete you can delete any attributes you don't need
I hope that helps,

Regards,

Richard

Hi all,

I am trying to configure a DXF export using the native:dxfexport algorithm and
layer symbology.

Using the categorized rendering for a vector layer results in values
"symbolLayer0", "symbolLayer1", ... in the dxf-file. In Autodesk Viewer these
values are the "Name", ArcMap imports these as "RefName" attribute.

My question: how can I modify the values symbolLayer0, symbolLayer1, ... to
another string? A third-party tool requires special values here.

Best regards

Re: [Qgis-user] Technical specifications

2023-06-02 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi All,
I would like to just throw my two cents in on this.
If Raster processing is envisaged, push it out to 32 minimum 64 recommended and
128 if you can stretch.
As for Processors, you need as many Threads as you can afford, with a good base
clock.
I would agree with the use of SSD I would also recommend the use of a good
PCI/NVME drive for boot, operating system and software, but also a second Solid
State drive for storage of data you are working on. It's best not to be
processing over a network, if at all possible.
Two decent screens are a must and I agree that a good Mouse and Keyboard are
almost always overlooked.
In relation to Operating System, Its personal preference. Both Linux and
Windows are stable, with varying degrees of involvement.
If you go down the windows operating system route, I would advise using the
OSGeo4W installer to install everything. It keeps everything working well in
one environment, installing all dependencies. It even making running GDAL or
Python commands from Command line easier as it has its own OsGeo4w Shell.
Updating and installing additional tools and library's is also a breeze. BIG
SHOUT OUT TO THE DEVS!!!
I hope that helps!!
Kind Regards,

Richard.

Hi Grant,
My advice would be to have a shared drive, or network drive, which both
machines access with the same path.
But...in the absence of that, you could also modify your path if you prefer...
The Filepath attribute could be shortened/modified, and you can manually set
the start of the path. So for example..

You can set your "filepath" attribute to something like..
someRootfolder/somesubfolders/ and your action text would be

1. MACHINE1
qgis.utils.iface.addRasterLayer('C:/somefilepath/[%filepath%][%filename%]','[%filename%]')

2. MACHINE2
qgis.utils.iface.addRasterLayer('E:/someOTHERfilepath/[%filepath%][%filename%]','[%filename%]')

As long as the attributes stay the same, as in the same Root and Subfolders,
then the first path can be anything...
So for arguments sake...

1. MACHINE1
qgis.utils.iface.addRasterLayer('D:/00_DATA_VALIDATION/[%filepath%][%filename%]','[%filename%]')

2. MACHINE2
qgis.utils.iface.addRasterLayer('//some_network_host/localdrive/00_DATA_VALIDATION/[%filepath%][%filename%]','[%filename%]')

I hope that's helps.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thanks for that. Can I use a project path that points to the project folder,
something like '.\' ? I use two different machines and so it would be good to
be able to use the local address.

Cheers Grant

Hi Grant,
Do you mean insert a GeoTIFF in?
If that's the case, then you want the following Action..

Type: Python
Description: Add Raster to Canvas or whatever you want
Action Text:
qgis.utils.iface.addRasterLayer('[%filepath%][%filename%]','[%filename%]')

For the above to work, you will need two attributes in your Polygon, a
"filepath" and a "filename" attribute. In the fileparh is the Path to the
folder containing the GeoTiff and the filename is the name of the file you are
looking to load... so something like this...

[cid:image001.png@01D98C99.DC1C7E00]

This should then load any GeoTIFF into your Canvas.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Re: [Qgis-user] How I solved my "Polygon" to "Mutipoligons" problem

2023-05-10 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Andrea,
I believe what Riccardo is getting at is that while an "ESRI Shapefile" (*.shp)
always will have MultiPolygon as its Geometry Type, the "Polygons" within the
shapefile are unique individual geometries.
We have this requirement in our own organisation, in reaction to Shapefiles,
there can be no Multipart Geometries. To explain a little further, we don’t
allow Multiple Geometries linked by a single row in a Table, each geometry has
its own row.
I hope that clarifies things.
Kind Regards,

Richard.

Hi Andrea,

If you are ok substituting the method you are using for GDAL, then you can use
the following..

gdal_calc.py -A input.tif --outfile=result.tif --calc="(A>=-2000)*(A<=1500)"
--NoDataValue=-

You can also implement this in QGIS using GDAL Calculator from the Processing
Toolbox, It can also be ran as a batch in QGIS or built into a model if you
are looking to batch it or it’s something that’s regularly done.
The output type is Float32, as you are using DTM, probably with decimal places
a NoDATA value of -

Subject: [Qgis-user] [pyqgis] create new raster

Hello,
I am trying to find out the best workflow to create a new raster.
As an example I take an existing elevation model raster and loop over it to set
values between 1500 and 2000 to novalue and write the result to a new raster.

This is the only way I found to do so:

# create new raster with novalues between 1500 and 2000
dataType = dtmLayer.dataProvider().dataType(1)
crs = QgsCoordinateReferenceSystem('EPSG:3003')
params = {
'EXTENT': dtmLayer.extent(),
'TARGET_CRS': crs,
'PIXEL_SIZE': dtmLayer.rasterUnitsPerPixelX(),
'NUMBER': -.0,
# 'OUTPUT_TYPE': dataType,
'OUTPUT': QgsProcessing.TEMPORARY_OUTPUT
}
newRaster = processing.run('qgis:createconstantrasterlayer', params)['OUTPUT']
newRasterLayer = QgsRasterLayer(newRaster, 'temp', 'gdal')
newRasterProvider = newRasterLayer.dataProvider()

block = QgsRasterBlock(dataType, cols, rows)

for row in range(rows):
for col in range(cols):
point = dtmLayer.dataProvider().transformCoordinates(QgsPoint(col,
row), transformType)
   value, res = dtmLayer.dataProvider().sample(QgsPointXY(point.x(),
point.y()), 1)

if res and value != -.0:
if value < 1000 or value > 2000:
block.setValue(row, col, value)

newRasterProvider.setEditable(True)
newRasterProvider.writeBlock(block, band=1)
newRasterProvider.setEditable(False)

This code has two main issues:
1. if I uncomment the line containing OUTPUT_TYPE, I am getting an error about
the type passed. But I can't find the right type needed there, it should be the
one taken from the original provider.
2. the resulting raster is scrambled as if there was a shift in the setting of
the values. But the QgsRasterBlock seems to be built correctly (rows, cols) and
the values set properly (col, row).
3. in the above example, the dtmLayer has an epsg 3033 crs and when loaded
manually into QGIS, it is recognized. But when I read the layer's metadata crs
with pyQGIS , it is not able

Subject: [Qgis-user] Autogeneration id codes

Good morning to all,

first I would like to thank Bernhard Ströbl, Richard McDonnell, Andrea
Giudiceandrea and Bernd Vogelgesang for suggestions related to some of my
previous posts.

Now I have another problem.

I have some tables already created that have a column with autogeneration id
codes.

>From self-generation I often don't get codes that start from 1 onwards but
>start with other numbers.

I made some tests and I noticed that if I create a table and add 10 lines the
autogeneration creates id codes from 1 to 10. If I delete these lines to empty
the table when I create a new line Qgis autogenerates that with the code 11, it
seems that Qgis keeps in memory the number/id code of the created elements, and
keep the numbering as a fixed counter.

How can I impose a autogeneration of id codes starting from 1?

Many many thanks!

Best Regards.

Riccardo.

Hi Riccardo,
You can use the Processing Toolbox, so a search for Promote to multipart.
This will create a new layer, which will have all geometries converted to
multipart.

Richard

I have shape file already created for a standard delivery.

The geometry type of this shape file is "Polygon" and I have to change it into
"Multipolygon".

Is it possible? And how can I change this property in a shape file already
created without creating a new one?

Many many thanks!

Best Regards.

Riccardo.

Re: [Qgis-user] Opening GEOTIFF file in QGIS support request

2023-04-27 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Gino,
From the screengrab you forwarded to me, I am inclined to agree with Richard.
The data appears to be looking fine. You, as Richard said should probably use
background mapping to verify the location but besides that it looks fine.

I have been on the Global Wind Atlas website, and looked at some of their
documentation. The data appears to be provided at a resolution of 250m (you can
verify this in the properties) which is why, when zoomed in it appears
pixelated. You will need to style it to make it look similar to how it's
displayed online.
Also note, that on the website the data stops being displayed beyond a certain
zoom level, this is to prevent issues like that you are experiencing.
I hope that clarifies things.
Regard's,

Richard

Re: [Qgis-user] Opening GEOTIFF file in QGIS support request

2023-04-26 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Gino,
Just to echo what Richard Duienvoorde said, QGIS should handle GeoTIFF
perfectly fine. I use the format myself when working with raster's in QGIS.
First question's I would ask would be:

1)Are you getting any error messages when you load the Raster? What are they??
2)Is the Raster appearing in the Layer Panel?
3)Have you tried Dragging and dropping the Raster onto the Map Canvas?
4) As have a look at the Layer Properties, under Information. Look to see the
rasters CRS, if its correct. Sometimes, the CRS isn't imbedded, resulting in it
being displayed incorrectly.

If you, as Richard said could share any information about the raster with us,
we could be of more help. As it is we have little to go on.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Settings, Options, Data Sources then Attribute table row cache

On mine its set to 10,000 and Ive never had any issues Regards,

[Qgis-user] Geometry Error Detection

2023-03-27 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hello all,
I'm looking for some advice in relation to Geometry Error detection. We have a
proprietary tool, which can validate geometries in line with OGC, which is
flagging geometries as having holes outside of area. Indeed when I check the
vertices I can see the issue, with the "Holes" sharing a node with the external
geometry (at the edge, see image below). What I was hoping for was that we
could show these same errors in QGIS.

[cid:image001.png@01D960A2.4CD1B300]

I've used the following QGIS tools for validation of geometries with varying
degrees of success, node directly flagging the issue detected.

Check Geometries Plugin:Flags error in Geometry Type, but gives
little by way of explination..

Topology Checker: Flags no errors

Check ValidityFlags no errors, with either
QGIS or GEOS

Is there a way to check geometries, a tool, python, and another application,
which can validate geometries? Or a series of tools which strung together in
Model Builder could flag the issues?
Regards and thanks in advance,

Richard.

Re: [Qgis-user] Problems with transformation including height values

2023-03-21 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi,
Just to add to what Nyall said.
See link below, which suggests a way using OGR to carry out the process you
require.

https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/324848/transform-datum-csv-csv-using-ogr2ogr

It suggests you preform your horizontal transformation first, this can be done
in QGIS, then carry out the Vertical Transformation. This can be done in
command line, if you are on windows, the best option is to use the OSGeo4w
Shell, as all the needed environmental settings are applied.
I hope the above helps.

Maybe there is an opportunity to have QGIS preform Vertical translations, even
if these are a separate step? It’s something that would be useful for both
Raster and Vector Data.
Regards,

Richard

EPSG:4326 to EPSG:7416, i.e I want to transform the height value from LongLat/
WGS84 ellipsoid height to UTM32/Etrs89 with vertical reference DVR90.

The file look like this:

== data.csv, EPSG:4326 id: col1, x: col3, y: col2, z: col4 ==
a;55.0;12.0;42.0
b;55.05;12.0;43.0
c;55.10;12.0;44.0
d;55.15;12.0;45.0
e;55.20;12.0;46.0

Step 1: I import the file into QGIS using the Data Source Manager -->
"Delimited Text" and define the projection to be EPSG:4326 and to include z
values. This works and the points are shown on my map where I expect them to be
(Somewhere in the middle of Zealand, Denmark)

Step 2: I export the layer as a geojson file using "Export" --> "Save features
as.." from the layer manager and choose EPSG:7416 (UTM32/ETRS89 with DVR90 as
vertical reference. And to include z-values

The resulting file looks like this:

The new file is shown in my map exactly on top of the original point layer,
meaning the horizontal projection is accurate. However, my z coordinates are
not reprojected to the new vertical reference. All the z-values are exactly the
same as the values in the .csv - file.

After some digging through Google and other places, I discover that EPSG:4326
doesn't have a z component. Surprise ! You have to use EPSG:4979, which is the
same as EPSG:4326 with ellipsoid height.

But, after repeating step 1, but using EPSG:4979 as CRS during import, and
subsequently repeating step 2, I get the exact same result: No transformation
of height values.

So, what is not working ? Am I doing something wrong ?? Or is QGIS incapable of
transforming z values ???

The second -- qgis currently doesn't handle vertical crs at all. My
recommendation is to use gdal utilities to do a transform respecting vertical
datums.

PostGIS with Geometry Index's?!
Set up Styles with Zoom Levels so as when zoomed in to 1:5000, that's the only
time you have full LOD

Looking for something that can take a HUGE, say a 50-75 meg mutli-polygon
(multi-state etc.), that has detail level down to 1meter, then parse it and
display it within 1meg on top of mapping systems in a web browser ? Options?
Not to mention, we have a few thousand of these so we need to be able to call
the mapping for any one of them. We also need it to simplify it i.e. maybe
deliver a max a 1 meg to the customer.. if they zoom out we want to make it
simpler to deliver something to the customer.. I'm sure there is a way of
doing this..

I'm sure there is an application, server, something that can do this
automatically..

Re: [Qgis-user] Colouring Geological Maps

2022-12-12 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via QGIS-User
Hi Grant,
What I meant is that, using the Field calculation you can create new fields for
each thing you want to style. In your case you want a field for colour.
Using the field calculator you can set up a script, for example...

CASE
WHEN "class" = 'Igneous' THEN '#fc9403'
  WHEN "class" = 'Sedimentary ' THEN '#03fc56'
WHEN "class" = 'Igneous rocks' THEN '#7303fc'
WHEN "class" = 'Metamorphic' THEN '#fc03e7'
  ELSE '#fc0303'
END

This will then assign a colour to each feature, which you can assign using the
This can be done for a lot of the styling options as I mentioned before.

As I said below, and as you mentioned in your message, this won't be reflected
in the Legend, only in the Map. The above probably isn't the solution you are
looking for.

Another suggestion is to look into creating a set of Standard Styles stored
centrally. When you load a Layer into Qgis you can load these styles as

You can also create default styles for a particular layer and every time you
load the layer into a Project the style is automatically loaded with the layer.
You can do this from in the Layer Properties and going down to the Style Button
selecting Save as default

What do you mean "storing..as a set of attribute values"?

Morning,
I'm not sure if this is a solution for you, but have you considered using
attribution and storing your styling requirements as a set of attribute values.
You can do this for Fill Colour, Stroke Thickness, Font, Sizes...etc...
You could build a graphic modeller to add the attribution to your data and then
have a single default style, which has all the Styling Variables set to use the
new attribution.
The only issue with this is that you won't generate a legend...
Kind Regards,

Richard

I can't seem to find one anywhere in the algorithms. Aiming to use this in a

1. If I use the option [Create temporary Layer] it produces a Singlepart
Geometry as Expected, If I save the output to a File, the resultant geometry is
stated as Polygon (MultiPolygon) Its the same for Linestrings also.

Hi Richard,
as explained (also by me) in the linked issue report [1], the line (PolyLine)
and polygon (Polygon) ESRI Shapefile layer types are actually multi-part layer
types which can store both multi-part geometries with only one part and
multi-part geometries with more than one part.
Only the point layer type has two different ESRI Shapefile layer types: the
ESRI Shapefile Point type (which is a single-part type and can store only
single-part geometries) and the ESRI Shapefile MultiPoint type (which is a
multi-part type and can store multi-part geometries both with only one part and
with more than one part).

Please see the ESRI Shapefile Technical Description [2].

If you want to check that a line (PolyLine) and polygon (Polygon) ESRI
Shapefile layer imported in QGIS contains features with only 1 part, you need
to check the number of part for each feature, for example using the
num_geometries function [3] in the field calculator.

Best regards.

[Qgis-user] Problem Noticed with QGIS

I have the following issue.

As part of our Data verification Processes, we require that our data arrive as
Singlepart Geometries.
We run the Check Geometries Tool and it flags the data as Geometry Type Error.
So I run the Multipart to Singlepart tool andwell that's where the problem
is...

Its two parts...

1. If I use the option [Create temporary Layer] it produces a Singlepart
Geometry as Expected, If I save the output to a File, the resultant geometry is
stated as Polygon (MultiPolygon) Its the same for Linestrings also.

2. When the New "corrected" layer is passed through the Check Geometries
Tool, it flags it as a Geometry Type Error, even though I know its fixed, as I
can validate it in an external tool.

Now I did find this.. https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/50720 which flags the
same issues, but states that its down to the Shapefile Specification.

Is there a work around for this??

Regards,

Richard

Re: [Qgis-user] large DEM not loading tiles correctly

2022-09-28 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via Qgis-user
Hi,
So the underlying data might not be very efficient, for example, no internal
Tiling, or compressions used.
What I would suggest is…

1. Create a VRT of all the data you have.

2. Using GDAL Translate convert the VRT into a GeoTiff, with the following

a. NoData Value of -

b. Advanced Parameters

   i.
NUM_THREADS = ALL_CPUS

 ii. BIGTIFF =
YES

   iii. TILED = YES

   iv. COMPRESS =
LZW

c. Data Type to Float32

3. You can then also use Pyramids for your Maximum zoom levels, I
recommend external, as they can be deleted if you want to change them.

I hope that goes some wat to helping.
Kind Regards,

Richard.

I am trying to put together the 50m uk DEM e.g.
https://www.data.gov.uk/dataset/835cf20a-8feb-4394-8b30-dcfe840ac13d/os-terrain-50-dtm
but it often does not work. The data are supplied as thousands of small tiles
that takes ages to unpack and put into a folder to get into qgis, however when
you try to load the tiles some work and others don’t and even the ones that do
work and display fine sometimes don’t merge to form large tiles and sometimes
will form virtual rasters but not merged files. Basically it is a mess. I
suspect others have done this successfully so any suggestions?
It is particularly odd that some of the tiles will merge and others won’t and
that some won’t display if you ask it to load hundreds at a time but if you
just add them in a few at a time then they will load and display (in addition
to the hundreds already loaded). This suggests various bugs assuming the
original data are not in a whole variety of slightly different formats (should
all be .asc)

Re: [Qgis-user] Raster

2022-05-24 Per discussione Richard McDonnell via Qgis-user
Easiest way I can think of doing what you want is to create a VRT of the three
raster’s.

Raster ==> Miscellaneous ==> Build Virtual Raster

When you do this set the Nodata value to 0 (the default transparent value form
the Georeference Tool)
This should create a merged raster for you and allow you to use the correct
transparency value.

Hope this helps,

Richard

Hello,
I georeferenced three maps ... all good, quite easy by using points from map
canvas. When my map was ready it has a black border (image 1). This is solved
by ~Custom transparency options~, and a black border disappears. But this
solution is just temporarily, because if I close and reopen ... that raster has
again a black border. I want to merge the three maps in one, but it does with a
black border between maps.
A solution to this annoying problem?

Hi Walter,
As an alternative to Wouter’s suggestion, I would recommend VRT’s (Raster ==>
Miscellaneous ==> Build Virtual Raster) Not alone does it merge/mosaic but it
also results in a small file size. It is also very easy to generate convert
that VRT to any other format output, using gdal_translate (Raster ==>
Conversion ==> Translate)
I hope this helps,
