Re: [Qgis-user] Qgis-user] QGIS 3.8 on Debian 10 slow and crashing

2019-10-02 Thread Micha Silver

Hello all:

Just to complete this thread, I have been working for some months now
with QGIS 3.8 on Debian 10 running Gnome under X.org (NOT the default
Wayland). And there have been no issues, no slowdowns, no crashes.

Today, just to test again, I switched back to Gnome under Wayland, and
immediately got a lock-up in QGIS. And my login session was restarted.
So there is no doubt that the combination of Gnome+Wayland+QGIS 3.8 does
not work.

Thanks, Micha

Thanks for testing. I'll also switch to Xorg and report back.

Over the past weeks I have been trying all kinds of situations: only
shapefiles (no GPKG), all GPKG layers in one database, a fresh project,
totally removing QGIS and deleting ~/.local/QGIS/. Nothing so far has
helped. I open a project, and after a short while the program starts to
freeze for several seconds. Even simple operations like removing a layer
from the Layers panel might cause freezing for 10 secs. Then many other
actions cause longer and longer freezes. Finally, when I save (another
freeze) and exit, my whole login session crashes.

I started building a project from scratch with a big mix of
layers, different CRS, changed styling, multiple map layouts, etc.
No problems at all. I created one gpkg and did many cycles of
edit, saves, save the project, restarted. Again no problems.

Then I added a second new gpkg layer, and boom: the project
locked, session restart, all the symptoms I saw before. Restarted
and tried again to edit the second gpkg, and again got the crash.
Is it possible that Debian has some database locking mechanism
that is causing a race condition and leading to these crashes? (I
should add that I don't see any of these problems with any other
software on the same machine)

Thanks,

Micha

I think I might have landed on the issue: multiple geopackage

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3.8 on Debian 10 slow and crashing

2019-07-18 Thread Micha Silver

I am seeing unexplained slowdowns and crashes (to the point of
killing my login session) with 3.6.x and now also with 3.8.
It seems to start after several edits to geopackage layers. Even
a simple "Save" or "Save as..." (to gpkg) after many edits can
take 20-30 seconds. A second and third save takes longer and
longer. To the point that QGIS is unusable. Then when I try to
save the project, it also takes up to a minute. Finally, on
exiting QGIS my whole login session crashes.

I already tried to wipe my install, remove all the .local/QGIS
directory and reinstalled. No plugins at all other than the core
plugins. I am using only the QGIS.org debian repository. And I've
noticed this on multiple machines with identical setups.

Can anyone confirm? Any suggests how to debug?

Thanks
