Hi John (Gilpin) Thanks for your work with QUANTA Re your: Please keep me informed of this problem over the next few issues - whether yours is damaged OR NOT (to get some idea of balance) - it may be worth asking the PO to investigate. My envelopes suffer from extensive fatigue along all/any edge. I.e. in transit, they are randomly 'worn through' where they were folded in manufacture. However nothing has been lost (yet!?). -- Re your: ... the labelling has recently been changed to enable better printing on the Desk Jet rather than the old Dot Matrix which is coming towards the end of its useful life - don't we all!?!? I'll hazard a guess that, as a result, label printing costs have gone up. If not significantly THEN GOTO STOP. If significantly; I can offer QUANTA an hardly used 24pin ESC/P2 Epson LQ-100+ (with documentation etc) free for this purpose. Ribbons are current on-line sales item. I just checked! Re: [Ql-Users] Quanta magazine Volume 26, Issue 1
Secondly, I am concerned about the damaged envelopes which some of you are getting. In order to minimise costs, I buy these envelopes in bulk, and it takes about 7 issues to use the quantity. It may be that the self sealing adhesive dries out during this period as I have noticed that occasionally I get one which will not seal at all - I use additional sellotape in these circumstances. I shall watch for this problem and maybe have to use sellotape on ALL of them just to make sure. The flap may become stuck in the Post Office machinery which could be causing the damage although some have commented that the envelope is slit open across the sealed flap (and not that the flap is missing altogether.) Please keep me informed of this problem over the next few issues - whether yours is damaged OR NOT (to get some idea of balance) - it may be worth asking the PO to investigate. My copy was torn down the length of the envelope, rather than on the edhesive end as you described. Not a clean cut, more like someone had ripped it open with their finger. It's not the first time it's happened, but we're used to packets arriving like this in the post around our way so wasn't particularly concerned. I still have the envelope if you'd like to see it. Rest assured that each envelope leaves here in good condition and the labelling has recently been changed to enable better printing on the Desk Jet rather than the old Dot Matrix which is coming towards the end of its useful life - don't we all!?!? [Ql-Users] Astrologer
I have been trying to help someone transfer some microdrive cartridges to an emulator and am having problems transferring a copy of Astrologer from Digital Precision from microdrive cartridge, both tapes giving bad or changed medium from a few files. Can anyone help me with a copy of just the Astrologer program from microdrive 1 and most of the files from drive 2, so I can try to repair the files for him? The UPDATES_DOC says it's version 1.08, although I doubt that it's too critical. I can't remember if DP did both a standard and Pro version of this program, so I'll hope that saying the file length of ASTROLOGER is 57,412 bytes hoping that will identify which version it is, it's just labelled ASTROLOGER ont he cartridge. -- Dilwyn Jones ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

With regard to the brown envelopes, it does seem a common problem. My envelope was stamped at 25.02.09 Manchester 08.17pm 44003704 - blue Second Class stamp UK post. The slit may have been caused by the sorting machine, and the general crumpling; as well as the final transport in the postie's bag. Maybe you can consider a slightly stronger envelope with a semi-gloss finish to it, to be more resistant of the mailing process. In the general mail that I receive this is the only posting that is regularly arriving in a damaged state. The one for the previous Issue had arrived in a plastic covering with a standard apology note from the Post Office for the damaged contents of the package. PS - The new label is much clearer than the previous dot matrix Hi Everyone, Firstly, thank you to those readers of QUANTA Magazine who have said how much they have enjoyed the latest issues. Is anyone else experiencing a poor quality with the brown envelope used for the posting of the magazine. Yes, for quite a while already. My Issue, once again has arrived in a very crumpled envelope, with an open slit along the entire top edge ( although the magazine was still inside ). Is this only effecting the London area in the UK ? As another London Group member has had a similar experience with the envelope packaging being used, arriving in crumpled state. I have been trying to help someone transfer some microdrive cartridges to an emulator and am having problems transferring a copy of Astrologer from Digital Precision from microdrive cartridge, both tapes giving bad or changed medium from a few files. I wonder if that was predicted? :-) :-) I might have known someone would say that ;-) I presume you have tried the good old format ram1_mdv1 and so on a few times to see what you get? Yes, I eventually got it up to 255/256 sectors by repeatedly formatting and easing the cartridge slightly to change its position very slightly each time. It's interesting how microdrives vary - trying it in mdv2_ only got something like 129 good sectors, yet mdv1_ managed 255. With the second cartridge it was the other way around, neither read perfectly but mdv2_ recovered more sectors than mdv1_ did, yet they were both the same package from the same company. Actually, it sounds bad (typically microdrive) but given that I was told they hadn't been touched for 23 years, it's not bad at all. -- Dilwyn Jones ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
