Re: [Ql-Users] [QL-Users] Stuff!
Hi Dave, great projects, thank you for your effort! It seems that it was the right time for me to return to the QL again;-) All the best, Anton Am 04.03.2014 um 01:36 schrieb Dave Park d...@sinclairql.com: Hi all, Wow, it's been a crazy couple of weeks. I am so grateful to QUANTA for the advert, and to so many of you for ordering or pre-ordering - your faith and confidence will be rewarded. :) Firstly, I have had to make a new batch of microdrive felt pads. I sold most of the first batch, and sent a lot more on to Rich at RWAP for those who would prefer to buy from a more established seller. I also sent him some QL on a Stick, new editions! I'm sure he'll have those listed soon after he gets them. I have changed how I package the felt pads, and it will soon allow me to reduce the cost even further. I now attach them to a piece of tape, then mount them on the instruction sheet. I tri-fold the sheet, and it protects the pads well enough - even if they get completely crushed, they fully recover in about 20 minutes. You should see the lower pricing once the current batch finishes selling. Oooer, I hope that doesn't kill my sales while you wait for the new batch! The battery adapters have finally been released from customs and should be here tomorrow! I am so excited to see them coming and hope to get the first orders shipped out this week. I have almost finished the Minerva MK IIs, and am just waiting for two components to arrive. UltimIDE is currently a box of components. I have almost finished the prototype wiring and have started the PCB design in earned. Currently, it supports two traditional IDE devices (more with an expander) plus two CF cards and a 1.8 or 2.5 SSD on-board. It's almost entirely SMD. It will have an option for 512K of on-board RAM, which will be selectable, in case you want an unexpanded QL for compatibility or (S)GC reasons. UltraQ is taking shape quite nicely. It currently is specced for floppy, parallel, QIMI mouse, IDE, plus its own CPU and 4MB of RAM. We are hoping it will run most QLs at 15 MHz.It will not be quite as fast as a Gold Card, but it will have twice the memory. It will also use some GC-style tricks like shadowing video RAM. It will come with a custom version of Minerva and, hopefully, SMSQ/E on CF card. Lets talk about ethernet for a moment. We would like to include ethernet: the hardware is easy. Fitting it on the card is a bit more difficult, but once we concede it'll be a double-deck interface, a lot of room opens up. Maybe if we include the hardware the driver will come. This presents us with a quandry. Including ethernet adds approximately £20 cost to the interface - we have discussed if it should be on every card, or an optional extra. If it is on every card, adoption will be wider and people will find uses for it. However, if it's not on every card, some cards will be cheaper, but the cards that do have it will cost a little more. If you, humble reader, could have a sensible discussion of the merits of both options, we'll read closely and take your thoughts into consideration. Which leads to... USB. We have found a way to reasonably implement USB *hardware* but again, there are no drivers. USB takes up less space than ethernet, but it is complimentary. I personally am deeply interested in USB for a number of reasons; especially of the build it and they will come variety. Secondly, the hardware has the potential to solve a difficult problem for us, whilst also giving us more options with hardware. Let me explain: We talked with Tony Firshman and Lau Reeves about open-licensing superHermes, and they have agreed in principle to do so. However, superHermes is a complex piece of kit: it isn't cheap to incorporate both in terms of component cost, and production cycle. What it brings us is both relatively great and relatively little... It allows us to replace the inbuilt keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard and it gives us better working serial. However, by modern standards, it still only gets us to where we should have been initially anyway. It corrected a fault and an in-hindsight omission. As an alternative, if we could get to where there is an HID driver for USB and a USB component on the QL, most HID (Human Interface Devices) - mice and keyboards plus all sorts of exotic input devices - could be made to work using default profiles. Imagine being able to use modern keyboards, cordless laser mice, etc. It fits well with the picoATX cased QL concept I am trying to achieve. It also means the hardware is open for people to write the other two main classes of generic USB driver: storage devices and the other one (I forget. It's late!) The point is, if we can get a basic HID USB driver functional in the next few months, it can go out on the QL2, and it might even make it interesting for the UltraQ. With the ROM image in flash, the capabilities could be extended by a community effort

The name was actually ram1_abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz123456_wda. Although QD displayed the contents of the file correctly, it did so with a purple coloured ink. This ink was set for all other files read in provided the name was not of maximum length. The file ram1_abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz12345_wda1 reset the colour to a rather fainter, almost unreadable, purple. Is this a new feature of QD? Has anyone noticed this before? Normally I avoid maximum length filenames but I repeated your experiment on my QPC2 (in 16 bit colour mode) with QD (vB01) and an ASCII test file. A maximum name with a 3 character extension produced 'dark grey' text, to be precise, a black and white stipple type zero. A maximum name with a 4 character extension produced 'pink' text, a red and white stipple type 3. Although the white may have been the light grey background my QD normally uses. Loading another file in the same QD kept the grey or pink colour intact. The resulting colours may be depending on the QD configuration or your theme setting. Furthermore I could not load the file into QD with FileInfo2, which I often use to look at any type of file, QD was started but the text was not loaded and QD reported 'no name' so normal Load from QD was used instead. It seems to be another QD feature because executing the text into VIEW_FILE from FI2 worked OK. Renaming the file to 35 characters made the FI2/QD combination behave normal again. Currently I'm studing the inners of QDOS and learning how to write a directory device driver (I'm new to the QDOS/SMSQ world). Using the Retro-X software ans dome custom C code, I've been able to make longer QL movies. Some days ago I copied a whole Big Bang Theory episode into an SD card and replayed from my QL :) In the meantime, I've received a batch of more than 50 small flash EPROM chips (PLCC32). Half the size of a regular DIP EPROM, flash, not UV, and 128K size. Being flash means that I can offer an option to let the user burn a new firmware version. As they are 128K insize (eight times the size I really need), I can have a fail safe option, suitable for recover from broken firmware. My roadmap is: - To have a design that let me operate a SD/MMC card from the ROM port (done!) - To have a reliable and consistent set of low level routines for SPI operations (done!) - Write a small device driver (not a directory device driver) to train myself. This device driver will use the SD card as a charactger device (in progress). - Continue learning about QDOS/SMSQ and directory device drivers (I have the source code of QUBIDE driver to assist me, and a book recomended by Rich Melchor) - Hopefully, have a firmware that let me use the SD card as drive MMC1, MMC2, etc. - Improve the design to acommodate a flash EPROM. Add the necesary logic into the CPLD to let the user burn new firmware inside this flash. - As this will mean I have to use a bigger CPLD (the current one is a XC9572XL-PLCC44, with all pins used), I probably add logic into it to control the SPI clock speed, so the initialization sequence will be consistent to the SD specification. I'm thinking of connecting the rest of the SD pins so it would be possible in a future to use the SD native mode transfer (4x faster) and support SD-HC cards. Currently, the speed obtained is fast enough to serve data to a MC68008 at its maximum speed (is there anything faster than 128 instructions move.l (a1),(a0)+ to copy 512 bytes from the SD card to memory? ) - Betatesting phase. - Available to the public There's an open discussion thread (spanish) about the inner workings of the interface (including some logic analyzer screenshots) here: http://www.speccy.org/foro/viewtopic.php?f=15t=2281 ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm Very impressive project! It's really beaten me down, but now I'm tackling the root cause, hopefully that will stop! I haven't done any programming in that whole time. I was struggling a bit with the ATC sim - mostly speed issues at native QL speed. I have now decided that the sim simply won't run on native speed QLs, since almost everyone has access to something faster. Also, my US QL PSU died (transformer internal fault) so I am a little stuck until I find/make a replacement PSU. I have worked it with my ATX power controller prototype and +5v right into the regulator socket, but serial and microdrives are dead in that arrangement so it is of limited use! I'm open to suggestions on where to get a replacement transformer, or for simple designs for a PSU that gives the correct AC output too. I spent the money I was going to use for getting PCBs and components paying the medical bills for the infection, so everything there will be held back by a few weeks. Got to love the American healthcare system. $120 x-rays and $25 antibiotics... And that's with insurance. I'm not treating it as urgent so it may be a few days before my websites are back up. Hi Peter, as you know I share most (if not all) of your thoughts about real hardware. I think the speed-argument isn´t so important these days. It´s more about retro-fun and to have a special piece of hardware to play with. Emulation and virtual platforms are fine (I bought also QPCII and Q-Emulator) but you have always to deal with a host-OS (and all the needs and problems of this host-OS). I also think (or at least hope) that new real QL-hardware will motivate developers to write programs for it. Speed-wise I am fine with my Q40 (although I really would like to own one of these Q60s;-)) for my QL-needs. and it still boots faster than any Windows-box with QPC or Q-Emulator (Sorry, Marcel, no offense;-)) What I try to say is: Go on with your projects, I really hope that we will see (and will be able to buy) a new QL-system soon!;-) All the best, Anton ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Yes, unfortunately the acoustic wasn´t very good in this room and I used inly the intern micro. Even the notebooks/netbooks are mini-PCs with nothing more than a different processor. The days of creating a new fabulous and different computer are long gone - similar to the Betamax Video recorder - you could create a much better one nowadays, but nobody would buy it because things have moved on - for better or worse. We are basically stuck with the PC. All we can do is to continue to help Marcel keep QPC on the market, selling well and frequently enough to keep him updating it. Cheers, Norman. ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm I agree with you. Even Apple with all its resources and money sells Macs with Intel-CPUs and (more or less) standard-hardware. What we as user can do is to buy soft- and hardware from the remaining resellers, give feedback to the software-authors (even its only a short I use and like your software!) and simply use the QL/Q- Dos in one or other form. I think as long someone uses the QL (no matter if its the original black box, a Q40/60 or with QPCII) the QL isn´t dead. I just ordered software from Jochen and bought various items from Rich in the last months (for example my Q40, which I like a lot). I wrote a large QL-article for the Amiga Future print-magazine and will do it again for a German/Austrian Retro-magazine (Lotek64) in August. I also started to coding on the QL again and will do some software for the QL/Qxx in the future (at least I hope so;-)) My personal wish is, that new QL-hardware will be produced. Urs suggested hardware would be nice for transferring software between the QL and PCs/Macs. I also still hope, that the Q60 will be produced again (although I know its difficult), at least a last production-run. On the longer run a replacement for the Q60 would be fine. I don´t know if a redesign of the Q60 with more modern parts is possible (with the remaining resources). More possibilities (please not, that I am aware, that this is wishful thinking): A original QL with some addons (and maybe with additional Sinclair spectrum-compatibility) in a FPGA (like the Minimig in the Amiga-scene) for the Retro-Fans or a Coldfire-based board (there are ready to use evaluation-boards) with SMSQE or QDOS as solution for power-users. It started with a QL I bought on Ebay last year. In the meantime I own a Q40, two QLs and use QPC3. The QL brought my interest for coding back. Its more fun to code for a simple (but elegant) system like the QL. So I train my skills in SuperBasic and Assembler at the moment and hope, that this ends in new programs for the QL from me. So it´s not impossible, that at least users, who owned a QL in the past come back. I also noticed, that there is a high interest on QLs on ebay. What I miss (but what is understandable, because of the costs) is the lack of new hardware. Especially (apart from new Q60s;-)) some kind of SD-/CF-card-reader for the QL would be nice. Urs Koenig hit on this idea at the QL-meeting in Vienna last weekend. I knew from people, who bought a QL on ebay, but couldn´t use it, because of the microdrives and the lack of an easy way to transfer software from the internet to the QL (I know, that there are disk-interfaces, but for an QL-newbie its not so easy, to buy and use a disk-drive on the QL). With an SD/CF-card-reader someone would be able to load the SD/CF-card on the PC with software and then use it on a QL. I think this is great news for all MacOSX-users in the QL-world (like me;-)), as the emulator looks very promising, even in Beta-stage. Secondly: If all goes well I will shortly be proud owner of a Q40-system (thanks to Rich Mellor and Derek Steward, who tries to fix the board at the moment) and will show it on the QL-Meeting, too. Hopefully this will interest more people in real QL-hardware. You know that I started a little initiative for a new production-run of Q60s. Although it isn´t 100% sure, that there will a last production run (some parts of the Q60 are hard to find in the meantime and Derek would have to solder and test all boards alone, which is a huge task) there is still hope for new Q60s. [Ql-Users] New Q60s
Hi to all! Not long ago I contacted Derek Steward to asked him a few things about the Q60 for my QL-article (which will be published in the next issue of Amiga Future, www.amigafuture.de). To my surprise he told me, that the Q60 is still available from DD Systems, if there are at least ten orders for a new batch. As I am very interested in a Q60 (I think it is still a fine QL- successor and -replacement) I want to ask, if there are other people, who are willing to buy a new Q60? I know, that the price of the Q60 was often criticized, but compared for example with similar projects in the Atari-world (Milan, Medusa) the Q60 has a very fair price (for a very special computer in small quantities). Beside of this, I suggested Derek to sell the Q60 not only as complete system but also only the motherboard. I think most of us are able to build a complete system around the motherboard, so this solution would be cheaper than buying a complete system (especially when you live outside of GB - shipping costs!). In general I find it a little bit sad, that the Q60 wasn´t a greater success and that there is no new real hardware in the QL-land anymore. Don´t get me wrong: QPC is a great product and I bought it from Jochen a few months ago. But I think real hardware is important, too. Hi Dilwyn, Am 12.12.2009 um 14:25 schrieb Dilwyn Jones: It's always been my view that if you want the best dedicated QL system (with the option of Linux as an extra benefit) you go for a Q60. In other words, apart from individual preference and individual circumstances, there is no major reason why either system would be better. You just have to consider what's best for you. I fully agree with you. There is no reason, why both systems can´t live together. I will still use QPC2 on a laptop when I (hopefully) get a Q60-system. It´s mainly Gerhard´s project, but he will have every help he needs from me. I met him and other guys from the old KuEL-Club in Vienna yesterday and they will help, too. Great that Gerhard (and Anton, as far as I'm aware) went ahead and plan the show :-) Yes, I remember that July and August (the main travel dates) were not so good for shows as this is the main travel season, so hotels are expensive, everything is full and crowded and so on. Also, some visitors might have their real holidays somewhere else, so that might clash. I'd prefer June for this reason and voted for this option - as early as possible.
