Hellop all,

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Pegsusus Mail.
It is not commercial (free), constantly under development, and the address book
lives on your
own computer.
I use it since 1998 an never has any truble with it.

Thanks to everyone who replied. The consensus was Thunderbird, so

Pleased to see it is a Mozilla product. Successfully downloaded and
imported my accounts and address book without problems.

You don't specify what a secure address book is. Do you mean it is
only kept on your machine, or do you mean it is only kept on your
machine AND encrypted?

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I meant only kept on the machine.

This is the first Thunderbird email!

I've just read (as I was about to re-install Thunderbird on this new PC)
that it is no longer to be supported by Mozilla.
Maybe wrong of course, anyway it prompted me to look at Opera and it's
stand alone mail program, so far it seems slick - but another start screen

All the best - Bill

[Ql-Users] Email advice needed

2013-07-16 Thread Geoff Wicks
I am currently replacing my 10 year old desktop and am using the situation to
reassess the programs I use to go online.

I would be grateful for any suggestions people could have about email programs.
In particular I need a program with its own secure address book.

My problem is that btinternet is Yahoo under an assumed name and Yahoo does
have security issues. Both Yahoo and Microsoft seem to want you to put your
address book on their servers and, for obvious security reasons, I want my
address book to remain firmly on my own machine,

Best Wishes,

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Open Source solution should be the right solution.
I use and develop around owncloud (http://owncloud.org/) as always use more
than one computer (Laptop, Desktop, SmartPhone). But this need you get your
own server.
For PC stand alone solution, you may dig using ThunderBird as it should be
one of the latest independent mail manager.

Cheers,

Jimmy.

Like you, I would never choose either (or any similar web-based servers). I
(attempt to) keep my address book etc 'safe' by using desk-top e-mail via
an e-mail client program. For years, I have been very happy with it, and
with my non-mainstream ISP (as are all my 'clients' where I have installed
the same set-up). I dread helping those who have problems and/or are very
busy with web-based accounts - and that dread is very hard-earned!

Of course, e-mail direct should you like more detail.

Greetings to all,

John in Wales

Hi Geoff,

Thunderbird I'd probably what you need. The address book lives on your desktop
PC and not in the cloud. Pop3 and IMAPP can be set up depending on what your
ISP has given you.

There are versions for Linux, Windows and I think, Mac. I use Linux version,
and have done - happily - for years.

I have not tried any others as I am perfectly happy with Thunderbird. I have
about 5 different accounts set up using it.

I also use Thunderbird and have been for about (checking oldest e-mail)
... Nov. 2007. Been working like a champ. Just remember to find out
where the Thunderbird files are (mailbox, address book, etc) so you can
back them up. I also use the add on that provides Calendar and task
lists. It works the same for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Another option is that some web browsers have an e-mail client built in.
Before Thunderbird, I used Opera and it had an e-mail client.
