Huge bundle of Christmas cards just arrived, plus Quanta mag and Computeractive all arrived this morning, along with post for half the street and that important letter I mentioned (which is now to late to do anything about). Which leaves me with the question... As I now have mail for half my street I'd better become a postman for the day... if I've got post for half the street, who's got the other half of my mail??? G. Anyway as I'm wittering on about nothing in particular I'll share this with you. Was talking to a couple who lived in a very small village (hamlet really) in 1963 when snow was as bad if not worse than this year ( eight foot drifts ) they walked about eight miles in the snow to the nearest post office to get the mail for their village walked back and around said village delivering the letters and packages, there was mail for every one except themselves All the best - Bill ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

It's not just a rural problem. Here in Derby management was saying the the post was being delivered, but the workers that residential post had been secretly suspended. This on elf and safety grounds. The impression we had was that the workers were correct. People who went to the sorting centre - one of the biggest in the Midlands - to collect their post were told that was impossible - It's chaos in there. We wouldn't know where to look. When deliveries were resumed it appeared to be only current post - I got my magazine just before Christmas - because that way more targets for delivery dates were met. I am missing a huge amount of post including 2 magazines from the beginning of December, a letter from the DWP and numerous Christmas greetings. With a bit of luck I could have them for Christmas 2011, Best wishes, Geoff ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Geoff Wicks wrote: People who went to the sorting centre - one of the biggest in the Midlands - to collect their post were told that was impossible - It's chaos in there. We wouldn't know where to look. I can fully understand that - so they should make that the official reason and TELL people. The not-knowing and won't tell is where most companies and authorities go wrong in this age of freely available rumour and leaks. Look at a website, ask a call centre, ask a manager and ask a sharp end workers and you get all different answers. We asked about something in a well known supermarket recently and got completely different answers from every member of staff we asked, which was hugely annoying. I think it's known as The Official Cover-ups Act. Make something up on the spur of the moment to make you go away. When deliveries were resumed it appeared to be only current post - I got my magazine just before Christmas - because that way more targets for delivery dates were met. Same reason why for years many doctors surgeries would not let you book an appointment more than 24 hours in advance. It made more bureaucratic sense to meet targets by refusing appointments to meet targets than to actually shorten the queues by improving the service. I am missing a huge amount of post including 2 magazines from the beginning of December, a letter from the DWP and numerous Christmas greetings. With a bit of luck I could have them for Christmas 2011, Optimist...they are in the back of an overflow lorry parked behind a sorting office somewhere. Like the proverbial postcard that turns up 20 or 30 years later... But, seriously, if only we were actually TOLD the facts, we'd be much more forgiving and understanding when issues like this crop up.
