 No luck, Geoff!

Indeed a disappointment, but nice to have some certainty over the situation.
I'll just have to wait patiently for the changes to QPC. Looking positively,
this topic has shown that we can look wider than Epson for solutions to QL
printing problems. It would be helpful if people who are sucessfully using
PCL6 printers publish the make and type on this group and in Quanta and
QL-Today. This sometimes happens with Epson compatibles.

I don't know what the price of the ML4600 is, but there have been some good
Samsung laser printer bargains in the UK recently and I can also say I am
well satisfied with the ML-4500. It might be useful if we could find out
which Samsungs are QL compatible and which not.

For those not up on the whole GDI thing, here's a quickie explanation...

GDI printers have an engine and a little memory, but not much else - the
image generation is all handled by software - the drivers on the host PC,
which does most of the work. They are very OS and driver dependant.

They're the printer equivalent of winmodems - the dumb blonde of
electronics...

If you go to Marcel's website there is a program to use the 'Filter'
option in QPC2 which IIRC processes text to output as Postscript for
such printers.

Oops, wrong program. This is a program which runs in SMSQE for
conversion of ASCII to Postscript, written by Richard Urena, ported by
Marcel. It's called MPS.

I was thinking of a program Marcel mentioned on thsi list recently as
being written by someone else to run as a QPC2 printer filter in
Windows. Can you remind us Marcel?

Yes, exactly. I got a new version of that tool a week ago but didn't
have the time test it. So work is obviously still going on.

No, mix up. MPS can be used as a *QD* printer filter, this has nothing
to do with QPC2's filter capability. In order for MPS to work there
needs to be either ghostscript or a PostScript capable printer
attached.

Actually I was testing on a QXL. However, I have also tried it on QPC, using
both Printer and LPT1 as printer port without success. The information
about your printer indicates that it is worth experimenting further, and
worth checking to see if there are any differences between an ML-4500 and an

Darn - then I'm out of fresh ideas.

Have yu tried it with Laserjet, Laserjet 2 and Laserjet 3 4
 Prowess drivers? At different resolutions?
 What printer exactly is it?

I haved tried all these at different times, but no success. I suspect it is
a simple problem of the printer drivers working, but the printer needing a
message than downloading is complete and to start printing. That is what you
did with the OPEN #3, par : CLOSE #3 par command. I think it was Peter Fox
that said he had to press ESC with Text87 to get it printed in PCL3. Again
the same idea.

The printer is a Samsung ML-4500. The main reason for this choice was I
could get it on favourable terms as the shop I use treats me as a business
customer. (That's a privilege of running the Just Words! international
emporium.) The printer boasts PCL6, Linux and Mac emulation so I thought
there might be a chance it could be persuaded to talk to a QL. The emulation
is done entirely through the drivers and there are few button controls. It
gets good use as a PC printer for work for publishers, genealogical research
including pictures etc., but so far the only QL use is the direct printing
of Just Words! manuals.

then it printed ok

eg

print from prowess
wait till this is done
OPEN#3,PAR
wait a few secs
CLOSE#3

If this solves the problem, update QPC...
Also are you able to print from other programs, e.g. Text87?
Never tried this, sorry.

I could print stright out from basic, though.

In reply to Phoebus (sorry I accidently deleted your email - so I write from
memory). Thanks for the information, but a couple of points.

You say the printer must be set for PCL6 emulation, but many printers only
offer this emulation and therefore cannot be set.

You also mentioned that PCL is downwards compatible. This is so for PCL5
downwards, but even HP warn that PCL6 is different, and I have been unable
to discover what they mean by this. I have seen a printer, I forget which,
which claimed to emulate PCL6 and PCL3 (or was it PCL4). I suspect that pure
PCL6 is not fully downwards compatible, but that some printers also emulate
other PCL levels using the generic term PCL6 compatible.

If would be good if we could get some certainty on this point, because PCL6
compatibility would offer a new range of printers to QL-users. Are there any
others beside Wolfgang who are successfully using PCL6 printers?

Geoff Wicks.

Hi Geoff,
first of all, after some checking up yes PCL6 is somewhat different... as I
deleted the mail myself I don't exactly remember if I mentioned PCL or PCL6
but in anycase I meant PCL...
Now... about comms between PCL printers and host systems...
IT HAS TO BE IN BINARY format...

(On the pc copy file.prn prn /b )

If you send the output as text... you'll print gibberish...

If would be good if we could get some certainty on this point, because PCL6
compatibility would offer a new range of printers to QL-users. Are there any
others beside Wolfgang who are successfully using PCL6 printers?

I will investigate further and tell you,

Geoff,
PCL compatible printers as I said previously sometimes need to be
specifically put in PCL mode or they are not 100% PCL compatible... (PCL
*IS* Backwards compatible)

had run out of ink cartridges for it (Jochen has no Deskjet either)

If anyone can help Peter, it would be appreciated. PCL3 drivers are
not too common on the QL but HP printers are one of (if not THE) the

PCL5 printers understand and can use PCL3. PCL3 is an exact subset of

Does anyone know where I can download a listing of PCL3 or 5 commands

I had a number for a HP Faxback service for these documents, but I no
longer have a fax machine and haven't been able to get fax working on
my computer (as usual).

Having these files to hand and perhaps put on a CD or website would be
very useful for QL programmers. I know that Christopher Cave for

this weekend (haven't forgotten you Chris, just notbeen able to find
the files I mentioned yet).
