[qmailtoaster] Sent email rejected for only one user

2009-10-01 Thread John Hansen
I have a user that can not send an email to one particular domain, at
least that I'm aware of. When rliso...@cotterschools.org sends and email
to johnostrow...@desch.org, or any other person at the domain, he gets an
immediate bounce back. However, I can send this person
(johnostrow...@desch.org) an email with my account
(jhan...@cotterschools.org) and he receives it without a problem. The
bounce back is not very intuitive, but suggests that the recipients email
server is refusing the message. The message is below. I'm leaving the
email addresses and domains as they appear to help try and solve the
problem.

The SMTP logs on my end indicate that the message is good, and sent. I've
talked with the email tech at the recipient domain, and he can not find
any indication on why the email might have been rejected by his server. In
fact, there's no evidence that it even hit his mail server.

Bounce Message:
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mail.cotterschools.org.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

johnostrow...@desch.org:

Any advice on where to look or how to proceed? Could the problem be on my

Nope. ezmlm does not have the same limitation that chkuser does, since
 it directly injects the messages.

 Hi John,

Consider using worldmerge, shareware that works very good and pulls data
 out
of a database. It does not send via outlook but has it's own mailclient.
It's not free, but 40$ isn't exaggerated and it does a very good job.

This tool sends mails one per one.
Only if you use iptables recent, you will have to exclude the senders
 ip-address from this rule.

 Andreas

Thanks Andreas for the suggestion. The database software we are using to
send out the emails is using a mail merge program that also sends out
emails one per one. I have several options, but the person sending the
emails likes using the Outlook option because it makes the emails more
personable. I assume the problem is, even though the program sends the
emails out one by one, that it sends them out fast enough that there is
not enough time in between each email, and chkuser thinks we are violating
recipient and security policies.
Is there a time-out setting (SMTP?) before the next email can be sent so
it can be seen as a single email and not as a large group that might be
contributing to the chkuser violations? For example each email is sent
out from the database as a single email, but they are still being caught
by chkuser as exceeding the recipient limit. If there is a setting I can
change in qmailtoaster, let me know so I can test it.
Thanks,
John

[qmailtoaster] Problems emailing large number of recipients

2009-09-24 Thread John Hansen
Greetings list,

I have a problem with one of my users who is trying to send out a large
amount of emails (900+) at one time. We are a school, and we try to send
out regular updates to our alumni regarding upcoming events and interests.
These emails are generated via a database program, then sent through this
particular users Outlook client. This is not spam, but to our email
server, it is being treated like it. Which I appreciate. All the users in
the database have asked to have emails sent to them.

Below are the 2 separate bounce back messages, the tcp.smtp settings, and
the spamdyke.conf setting for max recipients. It appears that the messages
are still being stopped after the recipient limit hits 50. The
chkuser_recptlimit=1000.

What do I need to change/update in order for these to be sent out without
errors?

I realize that's an option, and probably my first choice as well. We all
ready utilize many ezmlm mailing lists for teachers, staff, and parents.
For this particular situation though the data is kept in a database all
ready that has the mail/merge functionality designed for this specific
purpose, and it would be nice to keep the data in one place instead of
two. Thanks for your suggestion. John

I believe that chkuser has a hard limit of 254 for the number of
recipients due to the string type used in the code. You would need to
modify the source code to change the string type to allow larger arrays.
(I dimly remember looking into this a couple years ago)
Also, it's rather easy to recompile (from source) ezmlm and enable mysql
support. It's not in the stock QMT package (and is honestly easier to do
in the new version of ezmlm from source). You will need some overrides
for removing the old package since qmailadmin depends on it.

Jake,

[qmailtoaster] multibyte string function

2009-08-23 Thread John Hansen
One of our users is from Japan, and he is getting this error when he logs
onto SquirrelMail.

You need to have PHP installed with the multibyte string function enabled
(using configure option --enable-mbstring). SquirrelMail Notice:

I'm sure he's not the only one getting this message, but the only one that
has reported it so far. I have around 80 users from others countries too,
such as South Korea, and China. I know that this has to do with the
language characters, so can someone point me in the right direction.

How do I enable the mdstring in PHP?

Are there any other configuration I need to be aware of?

Thanks,

John

Hi PakOgah,

Thanks for modifying the script. However, when I run the script, it asks to

confirmation, before going onto the next user. A step in the right direction,
but still would like to have the passwords added within the script.

So, still looking for the part where the users password is entered by the
script and not manually.

Thanks. I'll try that. What type of encryption should I use?

Looks like you need to use the -e flag with a password. This lets
 you specify a standard_encrypted_password.

John, you'll need to have encrypted passwords to use this option.

Another way maybe to set the domain in Squirrelmail.

On my server I can execute /usr/share/squirrelmail/config/conf.pl and

whatever this is set to will be the domain that is appended to the

The domain name is the suffix at the end of all email addresses. If

[qmailtoaster] script needed

2009-07-22 Thread John Hansen
I have converted from mbox to Maildir folders on my old server. I am moving
the folders from my old mail server to my new mail server which is using
Maildir with Qmailtoaster. The problem is my courierimapsubscribed file is
unaware of the non-default folders the users have added themselves. I need a
script that can look at all the files in my existing Maildir folder that do
not match the default folders (ie .Sent, .Trash, .Drafts, cur, new, tmp, etc)
and then append those file names to courierimapsubscribed so that my imap
clients will recognize them. For example, say my user created a
Maildir/.Folder1, I need the line INBOX.Folder1 appended to
courierimapsubscribed. Can anyone help me come up with a script to do this?

Thanks.

that way, you could share authentication data like John is looking to do.

Does this make any sense at all?

It makes sense, but to make a couple points clear at this point in
time, when you want LDAP for Qmail it then becomes an
implementation. Sure, you could change the backend to serve both
vpopmail and LDAP, but that would be a major rewrite if you wanted
to use the same db for the backend. Can you tie them together? Sure.
The database is just a bunch of information. How you pull that info
and serve it for your app is up to you and is only limited by your
imagination. I could see a daemon that pulled some data from a
vpopmail database (either appending extra data to the DB entries
since vpopmail will ignore the extra data anyway or using another DB
tableset for this) that served it up in an LDAP format. Interesting
 idea really.

What about building a script to populate the mysql backend upon
creation of a new ldap user? I'm thinking the script would pull the
information from the newest user and then use mysql commands to insert that
info as a new record in mysql. But that might be harder than it sounds. Just a
thought.

[qmailtoaster] QmailToaster with LDAP

2009-06-30 Thread John Hansen
Hi,

We currently authenticate our users with an LDAP server for different systems
such as email and thin clients (LTSP). I would like to keep this same set up
and not use a separate user database for QmailToaster, if possible. Most of
our users use webmail, but there are around 20 that use an email client with
POP3.

Does anyone have a recommendation, one way or another, on using QmailToaster
with LDAP?

Pro's and cons?

Tuturial?

Thanks,

John

No need to go any further than this error since this is where it seems
  to have failed.
Without seeing at least the last 25 lines of the failed build, it's hard
to even guess why it didn't work out.
  Try running it manually:
  rpmbuild --rebuild --with cnt564 qmail-toaster-1.03-1.3.18.src.rpm

  And see why it fails.

Welcome aboard, John. In order to know how best to assist you, it
helps to know your level of expertise. How much linux experience do
 you have?

 Jake,
That script should probably do some error checking, don't you think?
 ;)

Perhaps using qtp-newmodel instead of the install script would be
appropriate. John would already have the pertinent log in that case.
 :)

Thanks for your replies. I have around 3yrs linux experience, mostly on the
Ubuntu side. I have no formal training, and I'm not a programmer, but I'm
comfortable with command line. Google is my friend for most trouble shooting
issues. :-) Most of my servers are linux based.

I did run the rpm seperate, and it did fail again. The command I used was:
rpmbuild --rebuild --with cnt5064 qmail-toaster-1.03-1.3.18.src.rpm

Here is the last few lines that were returned. Let me know if you need more.

 there's your first problem.

 $ sudo yum -q provides '*/nroff'
 groff-1.18.1.1-11.1.i386 : A document formatting system.
 Matched from:
 Filename: /usr/bin/nroff
 $

 `yum install groff` and try again :)

Jake, perhaps you should add groff as a BuildRequires to the qmail-
 toaster SRPM?

 -steve

Thanks. I installed groff, then ran the install script
(cnt5064-install-script.sh). Still returned dependency errors, so I ran the
rpm (rpmbuild --rebuild --with cnt5064 qmail-toaster-1.03-1.3.18.src.rpm)
separately, and it installed without errors. So, I then ran the install script
again, still returned dependency errors. It appears that the issue maybe with
what the script is looking for and what's installed. For example, exim is
looking for qmail-toaster, but qmail-toaster.x86_64 is what is installed.

error: Failed dependencies:
exim conflicts with qmail-toaster-1.03-1.3.18.x86_64
error: Failed dependencies:
qmail-toaster = 1.03-1.3.18 is needed by
qmail-pop3d-toaster-1.03-1.3.18.x86_64

Installing courier-authlib-toaster . . .
Shall we continue? (yes, skip, quit) [y]/s/q:

Installing courier-authlib-toaster-0.59.2-1.3.10.src.rpm
error: Failed build dependencies:
qmail-toaster = 1.03-1.3.15 is needed by
courier-authlib-toaster-0.59.2-1.3.10.x86_64
error: File not found by glob:
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/x86_64/courier-authlib-toaster*.rpm

Should I install each one independently?
Should I revert back to CentOS 5 i386?

Thanks. JH

here is your second problem; you have exim installed. as the error
message says, exim conflicts with qmail-toaster. you need to
uninstall it before you can continue.

 $ sudo yum remove exim

as a general principle, look at the very first error that you
encounter, and make sure you understand what it means before you
proceed further; in this case, all the successive errors stemmed
from the fact that you hadn't successfully installed the qmail-
toaster package, and the error message i quoted explains why.

 -steve

Steve and Eric, thanks for your help. I was not aware that exim needed to be
uninstalled, only that there was a conflict. Thanks for pointing that out.

After installing groff and removing exim, the install script ran without errors.

Thanks again, I appreciate your insights. On to the next step in the install
process.
