Now, not surprisingly, he'll immerse himself in modern Greek and Oriental studies at Oxford University after being named among America's 32 Rhodes Scholars. The scholars, chosen from 904 applicants from 341 colleges and universities, will enter Oxford next fall. The scholarships fund t! wo or three years of study in England. The American students will join scholars selected from 18 other nations. About 95 scholars are selected each year.``I'd really like to look back on the past through a modern lens,'' said Desai, a University of Chicago graduate. ``What I'm trying to understand is how the past comes to influence current political and social realities.''For six weeks during a study abroad program in Greece, Desai walked, took buses, rode a motorcycle and sailed with a group of Turkish fishermen to better understand Jason and the Argonauts.``I was looking to retrace this journey and get a kind of current perspective on this ancient myth,'' he said. The Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist and diamond magnate Cecil Rhodes. Winners are selected on the basis of high academic achievement, personal integrity, leadership potential and physical vigor,! among other attributes.Past scholars include former President Bill Clinton, U.S. Supreme Court justices Byron White and David Souter, singer/songwriter Kris Kristofferson, former presidential candidates Bill Bradley and Wesley Clark, and James William Fulbright, creator of the Fulbright Scholarships. This year, Harvard University had the most selectees with five, followed by the U.S. Naval Academy with three - the most for that school in one year since 1929, said spokesman Cmdr. Rod Gibbons.Another winner, Jennifer Howitt, who lost the use of her legs in a hiking accident when she was 9, plans to study development and to continue work to improve conditions for the disabled in developing countries.``I'm still having trouble putting into words how it feels,'' said Howitt of Georgetown University, a member of the U.S. wheelchair basketball team that won a gold medal at the Athens Paralympic Games. ``In a lot of ways,! it felt kind of like winning the gold in Athens. It kind of put this smile on my face that I couldn't take off.''Others selected include Jeremy Farris, a senior at Georgia Tech who discovered a pathogen to help control kudzu and plans to study political theory at Oxford, and Andrew Kim, a University of Chicago graduate who plans to study international relations, particularly conflict resolution and refugee issues related to Africa.Justin Mutter, one of two Rhodes honorees from the University of Virginia, has been working in public health in Haiti and plans to study how global religious communities confront problems like poverty and disease.``Everyone experiences shock, not really having known what to expect, and all of a sudden hearing your name called out,'' Mutter said. ``After that, it's this sense of gratitude, not only for being offered a scholarship but for the community, the experience of the whole process.''On the Net:http://www.rhodesscholar.org11/22/04 13:08 ESTCopyright 2004 The Associated Press. [QUAD-L] Re: Suprapubic Catheters
Hello everyone, I hope you are all having a great Sunday. I need some Information from new people that have suprapubic catheters. 1. Can you still take regular baths, or do you have to shower? 2. Do you use larger catheters than you use to use when they were indwelling? Thanks, Gale :-) No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Re: [QUAD-L] Re: Suprapubic Catheters
Hi Gale, I think they said when I got mine 10 years ago that no baths for a week and no showers for 2 or 3 days butI might be wrong. Your doctor might have other ideas so it would be best to check with them to be safe. My catheter is a 24 FR., I don't think they use that big for indwelling. From what others have posted on the list I think they use a lot of different sizes depending on what the doctor decides is best for you. Todd Hello everyone, I hope you are all having a great Sunday. Some questions were not meant to be answered. Reason? I could give you the right answer... and you might accept it. Or I could offer you the wrong answer and if it appears to satisfy you could further add to your problems so. I'm playing it safe and saying that without your charts... its a crap shoot at best... for anyone. Including you. I'm sure that you've talked with your doctor who is familiar with your files and case history. What did they say or recommend? Since your personal history may differ from others, offering you insights could be counterproductive. I'm not going to tell you to stop eating or anything other that might be drastic. We just don't have enough info. W In a message dated 12/12/04 7:27:51 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I WAS ROLLING RIGHT ALONG AND THEN IN JUNE AT 6 YEARS POST - WHAM! I can concur with you. Excessive weight gain, extraordinary body spasms near mid section and legs, and symptoms of kinked catherer hose when sitting up in chair causing unwanted wetting. tahouston - Original Message - From: Nichole Rohling To: QUADLIST Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2004 7:26 PM Subject: [QUAD-L] BODY CHANGING 6 YRS POST HELLO ALL OKAY - A QUESTION FOR THE ONES HERE INJURED FOR AWHILE. [QUAD-L] Permobile-Race Cars Wheelchairs
Wheelchair and Race Cars have a lot in common in that they are only as good as your service support group. Some of the best race cars lose races because of mechanical problems that can't be fixed by the service crew. And some of the worst cars seem to sneak thru the cracks only because of the service crew. Same could be said about any brand or model of wheelchair. What kind of service support do you have. How as Permobile reacted to your service and repair problems. Is the chair bad because it is not being used properly or you don't have service tech's in your area to perform repairs. Let us all know, ok? W In a message dated 12/11/04 8:47:50 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hey all, There is a lot of talk about Permobile chairs. Well, I have a Permobile Chairman 2k. Re: [QUAD-L] BODY CHANGING 6 YRS POST
I'm nearly 30 years post, and I haven't experienced problems like you mention. However, over time, I have found that my spasms have become stronger. But that is due, I think, because I'm less active than I was when I was younger. And going 5 years with no bowel accident? Wow, I think you might be unique :S I don't think you should worry about just one accident. Now if it happens again then you could start asking questions Did you change any medications 5 months ago? Either stopping something, or adding something new? When was the last time you took any antibiotics? In my case, when I take antibiotics, I start having bladder problems which last for a couple of months. Once my bladder starts producing its own bacteria, then I'm alright again. Bodies do slow down with age. So your weight increase might be due to age? Sorry I can't help you more than that, maybe others will have more suggestions...
