[QUAD-L] Home Alone

2004-12-17 Thread wheelchair
You are not wimpy. Your natural senses are kicking in and doing what is
natural. The important thing is to know the feeling and establish curbs so
that
you don't too far to the left or right. Those natural senses are what protects
you from danger and injury.
Call a friend and let them know of your personal concerns. Having a pet
animal can also help. Just remember that you are not stranded. You have the
telephone, the internet and I hope some friends. Try and keep yourself busy
and
the time should move along alot more quicker.

Smurf, You little goober, you. You are a para,
correct? Then physically handling the challenge shouldn't be a
worry. Put on a movie and lock yourself in. Call a
friend or chat on line with someone. Enjoy the taste of freedom - you'll
have plenty of it coming and you'll love it. I guess I'm just not much of
a worrier, the thrill of being here through what we have already been far
outweighs any fear that might come our way. Dave

[QUAD-L] Just ain't your day

2004-12-17 Thread Houston809
Title: Just ain't your day

Walking through the woods a man comes upon another man hugging a tree with his ear firmly against it. Seeing this he inquires, Just out of curiosity, what the hell are you doing?

I'm listening to the music of the tree.
You gotta be kiddin me.
No, would you like to give it a try?
Well, OK...
So he wraps his arms around the tree and presses his ear up against it.
With this the other guy slaps a set of hand cuffs on him, takes his wallet, jewelry, car keys, then strips him naked and leaves.

Two hours later another nature lover strolls by, sees this guy hand cuffed to the tree, stark ass naked and asked, What the hell happened to you?

He tells the guy the whole story about how he got there, but while he was doing so the guy shakes his head in sympathy walks around behind him, kisses him tenderly behind the ear and says. This just ain't your day, is it?

Lori,
I have had my S/P for almost 10 years and have worn an abdominal binder the entire time. I have very little discharge and I believe the S/P is a blessing. However, everyone has different feelings about these things. I can certainly understand your apprehensions.

I need my binder and velcro strap for ab support.

Unsure if I'll ever get one but seems like putting a hole in the stomach would ask for more problems. Seeping, daily treatment of bandaging? Plus I trust NO Drs these days.

Hi Gale,

I think they said when I got mine 10 years ago that no baths for a week and no showers for 2 or 3 days butI might be wrong. Your doctor might have other ideas so it would be best to check with them to be safe. My catheter is a 24 FR., I don't think they use that big for indwelling. From what others have posted on the list I think they use a lot of different sizes depending on what the doctor decides is best for you.

Todd

Hello everyone,
I hope you are all having a great Sunday. I need some Information from new people that have suprapubic catheters.

1. Can you still take regular baths, or do you have to shower?

2. Do you use larger catheters than you use to use when they were indwelling?

Thanks,

Gale :-)

Re: [QUAD-L] BODY CHANGING 6 YRS POST

2004-12-17 Thread B. Kimberlin

I wish I could figure out what was causing my sediment problems. I just had an ultrasound yesterday and receive the good news that I had no stones. I was pretty sure I had some, but I was told just to keep irrigating and drinking the water. I tend to have smelly urine and I believe this is because I drink too much Mountain Dew.

LORI,

GLAD TO KNOW I'M NOT ALONE. I FOUND OUT TUESDAY I HAD A BLADDER STONE AS BIG IN DIAMETER AS A QUARTER. UROLOGIST BROKE IT UP WITH ULTRASOUND WAVES AND SUCTIONED MY BLADDER OUT. HOPEFULLY THIS REMOVAL PLUS IRRIGATION 3X -PER WEEK WILL KEEP SEDIMENT DOWN.I AM GOING TO START DRINKING BOTTLED WATER BECAUSE MY HOT WATER HEATER ELEMENT WENT OUT YESTERDAY AND THE OLD ONE IS COVERED WITH SEDIMENT. APPARENTLY OUR WATER IS HIGH IN SOMETHING AND I DRINK IT!

ANYWAY, AFTER HAVING THE STONE REMOVED MY URINE DOESN'T SMELL. AMAZING WHAT GOING TO SEE THE RIGHT DR WILL DO! I'M CURIOUS TO HEAR WHAT HE HAS TO SAY AFTER HE GETS RESULTS IN FROM LAB.

BEST WISHES FOR A BETTER NEW YEAR!

I hate these body changes (or aging...lol). Sediment began 10 yrs post. Tried everything from Clorpactin to vinegar irrigating to acidic drinks, cran capsules ... ad nauseum. Lived with that till 1998 when it got better for NON APPARENT reason.

BUT THAT stopped and continuous UTIs began. Rather have sediment no UTI.

Sediment returned 3 months ago. ugh!

I was 99 lbs after my 15 months in the hospital post injury but still had a belly. I began wearing girdle or support panel underwear and jeans. I gained as the yrs went by and wore tighter girdles - no skin problems. Then I began to use binder about 6 yrs ago. I need it for breathing whilesitting up too.

Now, in 3 yrs I've had 2 bad wounds but neither started out from pressure. I'm still battling one in the butt/thigh crease. The wound is ok but the area around it is cranky. Red or rashy or seepy... depending on what IT feels like doing.

And I just found out I have a UTI (Proteus - big one) so am on a new antibiodic (new for me).

Life has been a drag here for 6 months. It's a battle to keep up.

You could try an abdominal binder. If you like.

I am almost 10 years post injury and it seems some things change continuously. I did experience problems with my catheter and occasionally still have problems with it clogging up for some unknown reason. Going five years without a bowel incident is pretty darn good. I could say that I went a long also, but every incident I have had has usually been the result of my bowel regimen not being completed properly. Over the last few years I have noticed that despite being only a couple of pounds heavier I am having more and more difficulty trying to prevent (what I now believe to be the inevitable) Quad gut. Just when I think I have about everything figured out, something changes and I am learning all over again. On the brighter side, maybe this prevents boredom.

I discovered that with a slightly larger catheter there is very little danger of any kinking.Billy[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi Lori,
I don't wear a binder anymore but never had trouble when I did. I have the person that gets me up in my chair check to make sure the catheter is not pinched in my clothing, lap strap, arm restor any other place. I very seldom have any seeping unless it gets pulled on or in some kind of bind with clothing or something. If it is seeping or gets a little irritated is the only time I have any ointment put on it and the only time it is bandaged. I have it washed twice a day with a soapy wash cloth then rinsed with a clean cloth.

I felt every bit as scared when I first moved to Tampa. I have eventually been able to virtually live by myself, despite the fact that I do not have any use of my hands or arms, but this was an extraordinarily difficult task which took quite a good time to get used to.
