[QUAD-L] Re: To Stacy Haim

2006-06-04 Thread Stacy Harim

Thanks Lori,

I don't have family nearby which is why I chose to move alone after rehab
but had so many issues. My Mom has her own health problems and quite
frankly upsets me to be around her because she could do so much better but she
doesn't take care of herself and gets lazy when it comes to doing things she
should be doing better like walking. She had a mini stroke in her late
40's and broker her hip on the other side a few years ago. I know she can
walk, pick up her feet better because she does it in public but as soon as we
get home, it stops. She pushed me so hard when I got sick. If I got
lazy or scaredI was going to fall from sitting up she pushed me but she
doesn't push herself at all. Oh, and she lives in Florida. No
offense to those of you that live there and it's a nice place to visit but it
isn't for me. MY Dad doesn't have much patience so at home, pretty
much all I have is my neighbor/friend. She would only come a couple of
hours a day I would rather have rehab during my healing prcess. I'm
going to talk to the doctor about it probably today or sotomorrow so we'll
see.

I am so glad to hear from you Stacy! Even if you
had to go through this medium ... you at least got to us to let us know
that you made it through surgery! At least you know that you have
that in your past now! YIPPPEEE!

It is up my opinion [which agrees with you] that you
would be better off recovering at home. Is there no family to step
up and layit on the line to check you out of the hospital and help
you at home? This was one of our biggest concerns when I just had
my surgery for the bladder stones. Most often, medical facilities
will like to keep you for the money [depending on the insurance
companies however].

Just remember you know your body best as well as your
home caregivers.

Back in 1995 when I had my shunt surgery ... when I
was finally in the clear after two full weeks of hell ... they were just
letting me lie there day after day and doing nothing but giving me some
heart palpitation medication. After three days of just
lying there ... I checked myself out of the hospital and recovered at
home.

To answer your question about the magic bullet
suppositories and your recent experience ... I can say that you and I
both sound like we are on the same routine. I also do my routine
every third day using the magic bullets. And, yes, I have had that
experience before several times no matter how much we try to avoid
it. I can only guess that the reason it happened to you at this
time is because of the extra pain medicine. I know that it is my
pain medicine that makes my bowel routine sluggish.

Sometimes, even if I eat the same amount, I will skip
going completely on the third day routine. Ironically, that
happened to me last night. And I have been encouraging going by
eating shredded wheat which has helped. But I did not go last
night or any time afterward. But it is not like it is not happened
before so I can expect to go a large [very large - LOL] on Monday
evening.

Remember that doctors are not gods and they still put
theirpants on one leg at a time as we all do. As well as all
the other management staff at the hospital. And of course a
hospital is the breeding ground for bacteria so, forus quads, we
want to spend as little time there as we possibly can.

I am on my way to bed that I wanted to respond ASAP
because I am so glad to hear from you so soon!

Hey Stacy,
Glad you're on-lineand the surgery went good.
As far as your care goes try to find a nurse you're comfortable with and be vocal with her.
I found just being very talkativedoes wonders becausea lot of peoplejust don't understand paralysis and are really lost about your care so theirmost common way todeal with it is to not deal at all so just strike up an everyday conversation, it opens their eyes and mind.

Hey everyone,
I just found out from one of the nurses that I could sign on as a guest through their internet connection since that is all my lap top is picking up. I found that pretty exciting.
My surgery was Wed. morning and I just saw the doctor this morning. He said he would send me out of here probably on Monday but I really am considering a rehab hospital. First I will tell you that it does hurt but the pain is finally treatable through the pain pump. I think its something like dylantin. I'm not sure how its spelled but my skin breaks out in reaction to morphine (burning, turns red.) I saw the flap. It's big but does look good. There is a little dark area close to a couple of the staples but the doctor isn't worried about it. It hasnt gotten any worse. I just can'tbelieve how bit the incision is for this. Its from close to my anus to close to my knee on the back. He didn't take any skin from anywhere else either which is a plus for me.
The care could be better. I wonder somedays if I would be better off at home because I feel like I'm not getting it here. Last night my catheter leaked so my bed was wet. The cna came in to change it Then it leaked again, just then I knew that it was clogged and it was about time to change it anyhow so I told them I needed a new one. They didn't have the size I needed on this floor and waited for transport to bring it up. He came up an hour later but never got the message about the catheter. I just kept leaking, sitting in a mess. I finally got it a couple of hours after that and I still needed to do my bowel program. I brought the magic bullets with me but things didn't run smoothly. I usually go every 3 days considering since I went on Tues., I tried last night. I waited a longtime and nothing. The only thing that did come out was the suppository. I normally go sitting up and change fo diet/meds. I ended up going a couple of hours later but didn't empty. Has this happened to anyone else after doing your bowel program sitting up for so long?
So the patient care whatever's started pushing me out of the door before I could even act like myself. Asking if I were going home or not. The doctor said they asked him 5 times and he said no that he is keeping me. Anyhow I am pretty sure that I will go to a rehab facility but it's a matter of who has a bed. I might have to turn one down. This hospital is rated one of the top 100 but I don't see how with the nursing. Some are nice but the majority aren't really helpling that much. I rarely see them to tell you the truth. I then have a few great ones who do everything that they can. Iknow in rehab facilities and nursing homes, the nurses are more underpaid here so there is a shortalge so they are pretty thinned out. I have the weekend to think about it. The mattress was ordered by the case/social worker and can always be cancelled.
All in all, so far health wise I am doing great. Way better than I expected.

I'm confused. How can be out by yourself? It doesn't sound like
you have the ability to take care of your vent circuit coming apart or
the ability to connect an ambu bag by yourself.

[QUAD-L] Watersking group, AZ

2006-06-04 Thread Greg

I saw a story on the news about a group that took disabled
people out boating and waterskiing. I think in Tempe, AZ. It showed a quad sitting on the custom
ski. But it did not record it correctly. I didnt hear the name of the
group, or what news channel it was. Has anyone heard of them, or know who to
contact?

I think that would be so cool. I havent tried
anything like that for years. Years ago I went up in a ultralite/hangglider. I
told myself then that Id try to continue to go out on adventures. I also
saw a hot air balloon that is wheelchair accessible. I tried to go on that
earlier this year at the hot air balloon festival, but by the time it was my
turn he was out of gas.

Thanks,

Greg
