Constipation (cont.)

In this Article
What is constipation?
What causes constipation?
How is constipation evaluated?
What treatments are available for constipation?
taken from medicine net.com:
What treatments are available for constipation?

Lubricant laxatives: Lubricant laxatives contain

mineral oil as either the plain oil or an emulsion

(combination with water) of the oil. The oil stays

within the intestine, coats the particles of stool, and

presumably prevents the removal of water from the

stool. This retention of water in the stool results in

softer stool. Mineral oil generally is used only for the

short-term treatment of constipation since its

long-term use has several potential disadvantages.

The oil can absorb fat-soluble vitamins from the

intestine and, if used for prolonged periods, may lead

to deficiencies of these vitamins . This is of particular

concern in pregnancy during which an adequate

supply of vitamins is important for the fetus. In the

very young or very elderly in whom the swallowing

mechanism is not strong or is impaired by strokes,

small amounts of the swallowed oil may enter the

lungs and cause a type of pneumonia called lipid

pneumonia. Mineral oil also may decrease the

absorption of some drugs such as warfarin and oral

contraceptives, thereby decreasing their

effectiveness. Despite these potential disadvantages,

mineral oil can be effective when short-term

treatment is necessary.

Stimulant laxatives: Stimulant laxatives cause the

muscles of the small intestine and colon to propel

their contents more rapidly. They also increase the

amount of water in the stool, either by reducing the

absorption of the water in the colon or by causing

active secretion of water in the small intestine. The

most commonly-used stimulant laxatives contain

cascara (castor oil), senna (e.g., Ex-Lax, Senokot),

and aloe. Stimulant laxatives are very effective, but

they can cause severe diarrhea with resulting

dehydration and loss of electrolytes (especially

potassium). They also are more likely than other types

of laxatives to cause intestinal cramping. There is

concern that chronic use of stimulant laxatives may

damage the colon and worsen constipation, as

previously discussed. Bisacodyl (e.g., Dulcolax,

Correctol) is a stimulant laxative that affects the

nerves of the colon which, in turn, stimulate the

muscles of the colon to propel its contents. Prunes

also contain a mild colonic stimulant.

The cost of ECU equipment does not equate effectiveness. The most expensive
equipment may be a disaster and the cheapest may not begin to meet your
needs of independence. That is why I've always advocated for working with an
OT
that specializes in home improvements. The right equipment installed
improperly will not produce the necessary results. An OT will start with an
evaluation on your needs and goals to achieve and work with your doctor to see
if
those goals are achievable and with what equipment.
Once the equipment is ordered and installed, the OT will then make the
necessary adjustments to pique
the equipment for the best results. Its worth the consideration...

[QUAD-L] RE: Vocalize iTalk Voice Controlled Cell Phone Systems

2007-01-29 Thread poajoan
Hi Dana.

You are right, he has added quite a few things to his website. It is
interresting that the one set up can be used for an environmental control
system, using an X--10 system I presume. I have purchased his carrier for
when we go on vacation. Using it, I can be carried out into the water for
swimming.

My phone system uses the Sony Ericsson 600 I Walkman, a Plantronics Voyager
Bluetooth, and a COBRA adapter from RadioShack. When I purchased it 15
months ago, the entire set up with a two-year contract with Cingular was
$165. I have had absolutely no problems with it, and as he mentioned in his
letter to you Dana, Cingular is very disability friendly. I have the free
voice dial, but did not know about the free information. I will look into
that. I really like my system better for just a phone, because it is very
un-obtrusive. I have a telephone mounted on a flexible boom, which attaches
to my chair, and a wire that connects the cobra adapter to my chin
controller. The Bluetooth is then wireless of course. As he mentions in his
letter, there is a bug with the Sony Ericsson 600i, which turns off the
voice capabilities, if there is a message waiting. I use that bug all the
time. To prevent me from making outgoing calls, when I am in a very noisy
place, I just have somebody dial my number and do not answer the phone
--voila, no mistaken outgoing calls. I just have somebody click the phone
button when I am ready to make outgoing calls.

I do not use a headrest on my chair so that flexing microphone would not
work for me. Just my opinion, but I do like my system better for just the
phone.

I chose this Plantronics Bluetooth, because it is very unobtrusive, and it
stays in my ear, even when I am outside bumping around.

Have a great day. Joan

[QUAD-L] Why Did the chicken cross the road?

2007-01-29 Thread Floreen Breyette
Why did the Chicken cross the road?

GEORGE W. BUSH:
We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want To know if
the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or
it is against us. There is no middle ground here.

AL GORE:
I invented the chicken. I invented the road. Therefore, the chicken crossing
the road represented the application of these two different functions of
government in a new, reinvented way designed to bring greater services to the
American people.

RALPH NADER:
The chicken's habitat on the original side of the road had been polluted by
unchecked industrialist greed. The chicken did not reach the unspoiled habitat
on the other side of the road because it was crushed by the wheels of a
gas-guzzling SUV.

PAT BUCHANAN:
To steal a job from a decent, hard-working American.

RUSH LIMBAUGH:
I don't know why the chicken crossed the road, but I'll bet it was getting a
government grant to cross the road, and I'll bet someone out there is already
forming a support group to help chickens with crossing-the-road syndrome. Can
you believe this? How much more of this can real Americans take? Chickens
crossing the road paid for by their tax dollars, and when I say tax dollars,
I'm talking about your money, money the government took from you to build roads
for chickens to cross.

DR. SEUSS:
Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken
crossed the road, But why it crossed, I've not been told!

ERNEST HEMINGWAY
To die. In the rain. Alone.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without
having their motives called into question.

GRANDPA:
In my day, we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Someone told us that
the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough for us.

BARBARA WALTERS
Isn't that interesting? In a few moments we will be listening to the chicken
tell, for the first time, the heart-warming story of how it experienced a
serious case of molting and went on to accomplish its life-long dream of
crossing the road.

JOHN LENNON
Imagine all the chickens crossing roads in peace.

ARISTOTLE
It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

KARL MARX
It was a historical inevitability.

SADDAM HUSSEIN
This was an unprovoked act of rebellion and we were quite justified in dropping
50 tons of nerve gas on it.

VOLTAIRE
I may not agree with what the chicken did, but I will defend to the death its
right to do it.

RONALD REAGAN
What chicken?

CAPTAIN KIRK
To boldly go where no chicken has gone before.

FOX MULDER
You saw it cross the road with your own eyes! How many more chickens have to
cross before you believe it?

SIGMUND FREUD
The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road
reveals your underlying sexual insecurity.

BILL GATES
I have just released eChicken 2003, which will not only cross roads, but will
lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook - and
Internet Explorer is an inextricable part of eChicken.

MARTHA STEWART
No one called to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing
order at the farmer's market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a
certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

ALBERT EINSTEIN
Did the chicken really cross the road or did the road move beneath the chicken?

BILL CLINTON
I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What do you mean by chicken? Could
you define chicken, please?

THE BIBLE
And God came down from the heavens, and He said unto the chicken, Thou shalt
cross the road. And the chicken crossed the road, and there was much
rejoicing.

COLONEL SANDERS
I missed one?

Are you wearing a condom catheter? I can't remember how long ago you said you
had the SP put in, but if it was not that long ago you might still be voiding
through your urethra. I did for quite some time and ended up having to wear
two bags at the same time for a while.

How many total cc do you have in the balloon. I usually use around 8 cc, but
you can go to around 10 cc. I also tried to make sure mine was taught during
the initial adjustment, but you have to be careful, if you make it too taught
it can have a damaging effect in the long run.
Are you experiencing any swelling in your legs when you are up in the
wheelchair? If so, is it going down after spending time in bed?
I don't know if you have any extra chucks, but you might want to think about
putting some around your stoma in an effort to prevent the urine from getting
all over the bed.

I will post this to the Quad list as there is probably some other advice that

doctors are at a lost. I take dettrapan to avoid bladder spasms, now I prop
pillows under my blankets, and have added 5cc extra water to folly. My best
effort comes by pulling folly until snug. The doctors say don’t but this works
best. When I become disgusted, I also sleep at approximately 3o degrees which
also works. All the above together have best results.

really doesn't do much good any longer. As for abdominal binders, I do wear

Let me know you are actually avoiding into your bed or just more at bed time.
My doctor was concerned with the amount that I was voiding and tried to have me
sleep at a 30° angle, but I'm not able to sleep very well at this particular

Re: [QUAD-L] pump re-placement

2007-01-29 Thread DAANOO
Amye, Dave, Dan and Mark ,

I will keep you all four in my prayers. Dave for your yearly tests to go
well and Amye, for your procedure to put your pump and that correct place, so
you will no longer have scabs to heal. Marks recovery from the flu.
Let us know how everything goes

You would think that on something like that the Doc could put it in right
the first time. I'm glad you found the problem and will be getting it fixed.
I'm going into the hospital tomorrow for my yearly tests, and they better
get the Colonoscopy in right!!! You take care, and you will be in my prayers.

RE: [QUAD-L] dr.G (Friday night lights)

My fingers have never curled up, but they sure do swell up. The only time
they resemble fingers is while I am still in bed, but once I get up the
edema swells them up -- it's not really that bad, but down in rehab, they
had me wearing gloves to try and keep the swelling down. It didn't work, so
I decided that fat fingers were better than fat fingers inside gloves. LOL.

Have a great day Joan

Are there any other quads out there whose fingers didn't curl up, mine
didn't.

mine didn't, they were very straight until i had tendon transfers, now they
are and both pinkies are curled tight.

RE: [QUAD-L] Pressure mapping/cell phone Bluetooth

Hi Dan.

As I replied to Dana, I do use a Plantronics Bluetooth voyager with my cell
phone. I am very pleased with it, and I've actually ordered another one as
this one fell on the floor and the insert into my ear broke off -- but my
son-in-law was able to glue it back together. Voice connect is a service
offered by Cingular, which is free to those with a disability, which enables
me to say the magic word to my Sony Ericsson 600 I cell phone, say voice
connect, and then be able to access my address book with Cingular or just
say call 555 -- 555 -- 555 and be connected. I absolutely love it. It
gives me so much freedom. Hope that answers your questions.

Have a great day. Joan

Hi Joan, it sounds like you've got a lot of technology working for you. Can
you tell me, do you use a Bluetooth device with any of your phones? Also,
what is voice connect? Thanks, Dan T.

2007-01-29 Thread B. Kimberlin \(Quadius\)
If I'm not mistaken, Bluetooth is not a completely hands-free microphone.
Although, the last time I checked was quite some time ago. I'm still waiting on
a system that will allow me to answer the telephone and call out a hands-free.
I remember some people intimating there was a system available, but I would
like to hear from people that don't have bugs with it before I actually go out
and invest a significant amount of money into the product.

Hi Joan, what is a COBRA adapter? And, why do you need one if your telephone
is hands-free? Thanks, Dan T.

 Hi Dana.

You are right, he has added quite a few things to his website. It is
interresting that the one set up can be used for an environmental control
system, using an X--10 system I presume. I have purchased his carrier for when
we go on vacation. Using it, I can be carried out into the water for swimming.

My phone system uses the Sony Ericsson 600 I Walkman, a Plantronics Voyager
Bluetooth, and a COBRA adapter from RadioShack. When I purchased it 15 months
ago, the entire set up with a two-year contract with Cingular was $165. I have
had absolutely no problems with it, and as he mentioned in his letter to you
Dana, Cingular is very disability friendly. I have the free voice dial, but did
not know about the free information. I will look into that. I really like my
system better for just a phone, because it is very un-obtrusive. I have a
telephone mounted on a flexible boom, which attaches to my chair, and a wire
that connects the cobra adapter to my chin controller. The Bluetooth is then
wireless of course. As he mentions in his letter, there is a bug with the Sony
Ericsson 600i, which turns off the voice capabilities, if there is a message
waiting. I use that bug all the time. To prevent me from making outgoing calls,
when I am in a very noisy place, I just have somebody
dial my number and do not answer the phone --voila, no mistaken outgoing
calls. I just have somebody click the phone button when I am ready to make
outgoing calls.

I do not use a headrest on my chair so that flexing microphone would not work
for me. Just my opinion, but I do like my system better for just the phone.

I chose this Plantronics Bluetooth, because it is very unobtrusive, and it
stays in my ear, even when I am outside bumping around.

  Have a great day. Joan

Dan T. and Joan ,

I don't know how similar this is to the set up Joan has.

I don't know what service is uses for sure. I thought previously it was
Cingular but I have not read his sites yet as I just got, but I wanted to share
with you and whoever else is interested in hands-free phones.

It looks like he has some new things to offer since I last looked at his
site and wrote to him and I don't know the prices yet.

Dana
