Comfortable, but unfortunately the pump is extremely loud. Can anyone
recommend an alternating pressure or low air loss mattress with a pump that

Hi Jim,

That is great news! Way to go! You must be ready to dance a jig. When I
started working on getting my chair back in 2006, I told the supplier that
either I got a chair that actually worked to meet my needs or I would not buy a
new chair just to be buying one. They always seemed to find a way to get what
I NEEDED approved. After test rides, reading, and talking to others, I decided
on the Quantum 6000 from Pride. I really like the torque my Q6 has when I need
to cover rough terrain, and the Mid-wheel drive when I'm indoors. I'm glad
that I never let my standards down and settled for second choice. Stay strong.

Since the summer of 2005 I have been in the process of trying to
qualify for an Omega Trac wheelchair. I had to try different manufacturers
front and mid-wheel drive (I have a rear wheel drive) chairs and explain why
they would not suit my needs to Medicare, medical assistance and Blue Cross
Blue Shield. After being denied by all three because they said it was not
medically necessary to have such an expensive share I started my appeal
process. I wrote a five-page appeal letter, with pictures and was surprised
that Blue Cross Blue Shield had reversed their decision because of my
compelling appeal letter and approved the Omega Trac chair for me. On New
Year's Day, my son went down and got the mail from New Year's Eve and there was
a letter in there from medical assistance. The letter went on for two
paragraphs explaining why they feel that this chair was not medically necessary
for me. The third paragraph then stated why they would approve the chair and
pick up the out-of-pocket costs that I would need to pay if I just went with
Blue Cross Blue Shield. I read that last paragraph several times and was
absolutely flabbergasted that medical assistance changed their minds. If it
wasn't for Kiersten from National Seating Mobility, I do not think that this
would have happened. The Omega Trac should be ordered next week but I'm really
not going to believe it until I'm sitting in it because you never know what can
happen.

Yesterday, Friday, I received a call from the appeals judge confirming that
medical assistance reversed their decision and approved my chair. She is going
to sign all the legal documents and send me a copy.

For those of you that are wondering why I went with such a large chair like
the Omega Trac here's my reasons. I live in the country near Duluth, MN which
is hilly and not very conducive to standard wheelchairs especially in the
wintertime. I'm a large man that likes the stability of the Omega Trac
compared to my Invacare especially when transversing hills and uneven ground.
I need a solid platform for driving around the hills of Duluth and I own my own
home in the country and have been stuck to many times in my driveway during and
after a snow along with not being able to go in my yard unless somebody is with
me.
  The bottom line is freedom.

I guess the moral of the story is to find the company that you feel
comfortable dealing with and also never take no for an answer until all avenues
and appeals are exhausted. Carefully read all documentation and make sure all
your I's and T's are dotted and crossed.

waiting for a custom fitted back for my wheelchair. (are they just BS'ing
me about that?) Do any of you have a custom fitted back to adjust for a
twisted spine?

They haven't helped me.

If you are awake all night in too much pain to sleep, you have my deepest
sympathy. The best solution to pain is sleep. It feels like I'm
shuffeling poisons some nights. Alchohol for morphine, for codeine, for
valium, for pot, for C-span. Again spiraling downward!

I can't sleep. My pains keep getting worse (26.5 years), and I'm now
losing sensation and function of my arms (C-5), and getting pain in them
here I didntt have it, but doctor says my MRI hasn't changed for years,
and they say the hole in my cord isn't a syrinx, so nothing is done. I'm
terrified I'll lose arm function soon - it seems to get worse by the
minute now. Heavy,, numb, weak - they feel like they'll be gone by
tomorrow.

My mom who takes care of me (I can't concentrate on things, or do most
ADLs) is in the hospital.

Re: [QUAD-L] emc digi-tone

2008-01-12 Thread Derrick
The digi-one speaker blows when an electrical surge happens while connecting
battery to the terminals.
i must now replace the digi-tone speaker like i have the past 2 times.
This should not happen and i am trying to figure out if it is the installed
wrong or is it a manufacture problem.
It is bullcrap to HAVE TO spend hundreds of dollars everytime the battery is
disconnected.
Battery lasted me 3 years average..

EMC has a micro processor that must have voltage constant. Disconnect the 12
volt source and the system has to reboot, in your car.
I'd check with your EMC installer to verify this.

The EMC system is very sensitive system. Disconnecting the battery and
reconnecting the battery should be done by the service installer as there is a
sequence to the process to prevent that.
Same applies with jump starting the EMC system. Unlike other automotive
vehicles without the EMC system. Ask your service installer about this
sequence, otherwise you will continue to blow those speakers.

[QUAD-L] What's happening in Illinois

2008-01-12 Thread Dr. William E. Heft
Hello to all. Thanks for the instant replies. I trust I have the proceedure
down pat now. For Dana, I have just been introduced to the list and joined
several days ago. It is so important to have a support group to commune with,
especially when you have had none.

Reason being that after a while your thoughts will begin to convince you that
your condition or problems are unique in the world.

To Eric: With out divulging too much info, I am in the northarn part of
Illinois, up in the corner of Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Given that you are a resident of Illinois, anywhere near this area?

I became a quad as the result of a schawnona tumor that grew around my spinal
cord and crushed it to the thickness of a ribbon, causing me to be paralized
from the neck on down. After surgery removed the tumor, I remained totally
paralized for almost a year, but then began to regain certain bodily functions.

After 6 years I can walk a short distance and stand for up to several
minutes, but still subject to fall at any moment, plus I still only have
approximately 15% use of my hands. I drop everything I attempt to pick up. I
have the overall body strength of a 5 year old.

Because of the isolation of the wilderness area that I live in, I am very
limited on medical help, some even hinting that my condition is only my
imagination, and others just flat resusing to help in anyway.

I finally declared enough is enough, and am making a tremdeous effort to
correct my situation by striking out on my own.
I can't help but believe there are others here on this list that have
experiences very similar to mine in regards to the medical profession.
