worse than bite! Once a kid pushed my oldest son off the porch it wasn't a bad
fall but ever since he harrasses all blond haired little boys. I got a

A Rising Tide Won't Lift a Leaky Boat

February 21, 2008, Volume 8, Issue 8

New research published in Health Affairs shows that the uptick in the U.S.
economy in recent years failed to halt the growing number of uninsured in this
country. From 2004 to 2006, even as household incomes rose and the proportion
of people living in poverty declined slightly, the percentage of people with
health coverage through their jobs continued to fall. The number of uninsured
grew among low-, middle- and upper-income groups, although it grew fastest
among the self-employed and workers in small firms, as well as among service
industry workers whose jobs tend not to come with health benefits. More of us
fall into those categories these days, and more of us--47 million at last
count--do without health insurance.

Now that the economic uptick seems to have tuckered out, we can expect things
to get worse, faster. The Health Affairs study showed an even larger increase
in the number of uninsured from 2000 to 2004, a period when incomes declined
and more people slipped into poverty.

Good times or bad, our system of obtaining health insurance through our
employers is increasingly unable to deliver. A job with decent health benefits
may some day be as rare as one that guarantees a pension.

One bright spot in this gloomy picture is the consistently low number--1.5
percent in 2006--of adults over 65 who are uninsured. The reason of course is
Medicare. Carpenters, fast food workers, barbers, Walmart greeters, florists,
grocery baggers, drywall hangers, security guards and anyone else now working
without health insurance becomes eligible for Medicare coverage when they hit
65. They will receive the same Medicare benefit as retired insurance executives
and drug company lobbyists, whether the economy is up or down. If you work hard
and pay your taxes, your right to Medicare coverage is guaranteed.

Making quality, affordable health care a right for all of us should be both the
guiding principle and the ultimate goal of health care reform. It does not
explain how we're going to pay to cover everyone, but it tells us to find the
money. It does not control the rising costs of health care, but it forces us to
make those hard choices. More than anything, it makes clear that the current
path is a dead end. Boosterism--faking optimism that the next cycle of economic
growth will solve our problems--is wearing thin. The blind faith, in the face
of all evidence to the contrary, that the market for private insurance will
solve everything, rings hollow. Tinkering around the edges is no longer enough.
It's time to stand up for our right to health care.

* * * *

Medical Record

The number of uninsured Americans increased by 3.4 million between 2004 and
2006, despite improving economic conditions. In the first four years of the
decade, during a period of economic recession, the number increased by 6.0
million. The dominant factor in both periods was a decline in
employer-sponsored insurance coverage (The U.S. Economy And Changes In Health
Insurance Coverage, 2000--2006
(http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=hkIRK6PRLmKXKhLs=ruI5KfPNJcKYJaOWGm=lkIXIbNOJdI4G),
 Health Affairs, February 20, 2008).

Both the percentage and the number of people without health insurance
increased in 2006. The percentage without health insurance increased from 15.3
percent in 2005 to 15.8 percent in 2006, and the number of uninsured increased
from 44.8 million to 47.0 million (Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance
Coverage in the United States: 2006
(http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=anJDLLMpFfJKIXKs=ruI5KfPNJcKYJaOWGm=lkIXIbNOJdI4G),
 U.S. Census Bureau, August 2007).

Here's my philosophy--that government ought to trust private medicine; that
we've got a fabulous health care system. Does it have issues? Sure, it's got
issues. But when you compare it to other health care systems in the world, the
United States has got a fabulous health care system (President Bush Discusses
Health Care, Economic Growth and Free Trade at 2007 Grocery Manufacturers
Association/Food Products Association Fall Conference
(http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=dqLJIUNBLiIRK7Js=ruI5KfPNJcKYJaOWGm=lkIXIbNOJdI4G),

Gina,

How did they find out your hip was dislocated? Was it your doctor or a
therapist who told you this? Did they explain how it became that way?

I ask these questions, because I am paralyzed on the right side and have no
use of that arm. Because of the paralysis, my arm has subluxation. I
understand that my arm became this way, because the muscle hangs down from my
shoulder. I was just curious about the dislocation of your hip.

Congratulations Dan,

so glad that your daughter got you a puppy. Do you know how large it is
expected to be, according to its parents. I have always wondered what a
Chihuahua would be like as a pet, I have a female, 5 pound Yorkie that just
turned four years old and I really love her as a companion. Zoe likes to be
on my lap and she will lay on top of my phone and iPod. She loves it when I
don't have my Plexiglas on my lap and she can have it to herself. The person
I have gone to for my nails as a small Chihuahua about the same size as Zoe,
that is really cute that she sometimes has in her shop. She is afraid of my
dog that is on my lap, she hides under the tables but they don't bark at
each other.

Keep us posted on your little daughter. What is her name?
Dana
Dave, so your little dog is not fixed yet. I have heard that little boys
like to do that. I only had little girls.
What is his name?
Dana

I really like my 2 guys. my 'stud' needs a fix which is in the pipeline -
when he gets started, nobody is safe. poor little guy runs around humping
thin air. the breed is very ferocious around strangers, my guys go after
pit bulls and great danes. also, anybody entering your house needs to be
careful and not turn their backs to them right away. mine sleep with me,
they love to cuddle at night thus making it very hard to roll over. All in
all, I would definitely recommend this breed - they are very attentive
companions and make great intruder alerts.

Vet said today, she is in perfect health. Of all the puppies we have ever

[QUAD-L] maybe another spinal surgery

2008-02-21 Thread Stacy Harim
Hey all,

I had posted a while back that I have been feeling some grinding in my back and
it had been hurting (I had rods put in from T7 down into my pelvis). My
neurosurgeon in Baltimore was out of town at the time so I went to my pain
specialist here locally that used to practice neurosurgery in Baltimore. I had
x rays done and he seemed to think that a rod might have been moving where they
had to remove a screw.

I went to my neurosurgeon a couple of weeks ago and had another ct scan done.
It happens that a screw popped through the vertebrae and is grining against the
one above it. He said that its not real important to consider surgery now but
if I go through with it, he is going to put more rods in. He's now talking from
T4 now so I wont be able to bend my back pretty much at all. It's freaking me
out because My level is T7 so I didn't have full sensation therefore pain from
my last surgery and now I am having enough problems with my push wheelchair
because of not being able to bend my back. I tip backwards going up ramps and
curb cuts. I use the sides of my ramp to pull myself and go up curb cuts
backwards. I really dont want to go to a power chair, although I know the
better part of you use one, but I am freaked out about gaining weight and not
being able to do excercises because I can barely keep my balance as is. I know
that you all deal with this
daily. Any ideas, tips, helplful words? All input is welcome.

I am really considering going through with this surgery soon, considering what
my second opinion says. The pain is pretty bad and the grinding feeling isn't
very pleasant.

I am finally healed from my sore, driving and some independence again. I was
going to get back on the sub lists for teaching since I'm sooo broke and now I
have to deal with these problems again. Anyone else suffering from another
obstacle after getting over a previous one? I really feel like I am going
backwards. I have been very blessed, dont get me wrong. I once was a quad,
but starting to feel like I am going backwards after all I have been through.
I am feeling really down here lately and would love some sort of words of
encouragement.

Sorry for the rambling. I've been holding it in the last few months. I feel
like I am a burden when complaining, but I've had enough of this s...t.

Service wouldn't come over to put us in bed, I told her to call 311 see if
fireman(rescue team) would help us out. We really didn't want to sit up in our

I had to get pulled out of the tub a few years ago. At one time, I could get
myself into the shower. I had really bad spasms that threw me in, my legs were
bent and wedged in the tub, I spent the night because I forgot my phone to take
with me. Long story short, my friend called them in the morning and they
bailed me out. They asked my friend to cover me so I had my privacy. It's nice
when they go above and beyond and are really great about it.

Your story is much better than mine hehe. I'm sure you all had a good time
while they did it. What a way to weather the storm. I just cant believe you
couldn't get the help you count on to get in bed. My CNA is on her last
strike. Not only has she not shown up a few times, but then doesn't call on
top of it. I only use her a few times a week, but i count on her those certain
days.

Are are a meanie. lol. I think saying someone deserves to die is pretty harsh
thing to say, no matter what the circumstance. There is a girl here that
became quadraplegic because she was playing chicken in summer traffic at the
beach. She isn't the friendliest person and seems that she is pretty
miserable. I've said some some things about how she acted when I had the
chance to meet her while sharing a bus ride, but I also didn't know her whole
situation. This young girl was still in high school and both of her parents
had been dead. She is a quad, on a vent and living with a grandmother because
of what she did, but does she deserve it, I don't know. It's not my opinion
that matters, but no matter what, she will be in a bad way her whole life
because of what she's done.

I am going to a specialist hopefully soon. I have to go to my rehab doc first
to get referred to him, because he won't take just anyone. I'm just in a ton
of pain and want it to stop. I'm so afraid of losing the little bit of
flexability, let alone being a quad again. I had 3 surgeries between the end
of may and beginning of july. First he put a cage to replace a couple of
vertebrae's mid T sec, then I ended up with 2 more cages and rods in t and l
spine, then finally on my bday in beginning of july, he had to remove a screw
too close to my aeorta. Waking up on a vent scares the crap out of me since I
had gotten damage to my vocal cords the first time I was on one and had to get
surgery to get my voice back. This all scares the hell out of me in general
not even considering being put to sleep for a 9 plus hour surgery.
