Thanks Paul. That is kind. I wish everyone were that way. So many with
minor problems find a way to complain about so much such as my own mother who
had to get two toes amputated about a month ago. She's in rehab now and is
constantly complaining to me. I just want to shake her. She acts so worried
about me but then acts like her problems are so much bigger than mine. I
sympathize but at least she can walk even if it's not well. I have it so much
better than so many of you on the list and I respect what you all go through in
a day. I was a quad wish absolutely no movement for a short time and now
paraplegic so I know how bad it can be and thank God everyday that I am not.
When I first became sick I just didnt get up one day and woke up about a month
later from a coma.

I realize that if I didnt have a roommate to call 911,I would be dead and am
so grateful that I wake up every day. Its sad that it took so much for me to
appreciate my life even if it is pretty bad at times. When it's bad, its bad
and I dont even bother complaining to anyone about it. I put on a face when
I'm not doing well because I don't want to bring down people around me and
don't want them to feel bad for me. They have their own issues to deal with, I
don't want to bother them with mine.

My mom's friend gave me a card for my graduation from high school and it's
the only one I remember. I will never forget his words God rest his soul. He
said life is a do it yourself project I think that says it all.

When using the acronym VA ... I am only familiar with it being Veterans

confused today anyway. LOL.

If you ARE talking to me and asking me if I am using something for
circulation, etc. since my DVT ... just a baby aspirin a day. I was on
Coumadin for 10 years only because I was afraid to go off of it... because I
am immobile, etc.. But that arsenic can build up in your bones and I
finally called it quits about three years ago and have been fine with just a
baby aspirin a day.

I had a DVT (deep vein clot/thrombosis) in 1995 that was encouraged by
surgeries. I was also very, very, very lucky to have survived it because I
was telling doctors (my neurosurgeon and his staff hours away) my symptoms
and they were ignoring them even though they were classic symptoms of a
DVT! Hitherto ... I was not familiar with clots of any type so I was in the
dark. It was the Internet that saved my life essentially.

With what I described... they should have wanted to at the very least
eliminate the possibility of a clot since I just had two surgeries with that
doctor and that is a primary thing to worry about after surgery. But
noo... I thought it was probably just swelling and I should wear some of
 those tight hose. QUACK, QUACK

I went around for about a month with my left lower leg very swollen and
very hard. I finally read an article on the net (I was very new to the
Internet back then and only knew how to look things up) and one doctor in
Washington state had an article about spinal cord injuries and folks with
MS. A sentence said If one leg is significantly larger than the other...
it could indicate a clot. All I knew was that a clot was not good but I
had no idea that I had a DVT whereby all I had to do was move a certain way
to have it move directly to my lungs to kill me.

The very next morning I called my primary care physician and I went to see
him. He looked at it and said I don't know... I don't think it could be a
clot but I will send you over to the hospital to have an ultrasound done.
Needless to say... I never left the hospital because it was a lengthy clot
and I was in immediate danger.

 DOCTORS! QUACK, QUACK!

I think I'm on my 95th life because of so many negligent doctors.

After 35 years of using external caths, I'll be getting a supra pubic in 3
weeks because my bladder just hasn't been draining well in awhile now. Those of
you with SP's, do you have any advice, tips, input, etc. for this soon to be SP
rookie?

Thanks,

Your medical care sounds similar as the Veterans Hospital. I am poverty
income also which is exactly why having hospitalization insurance is
necessary. Do the math! My monthly payment is $46.00 which I am sure you
can manage. Once hospitalized it pays out $80.00 a day. Two or three days
in will pay the annual premium which puts all other days paid into clear
pocket money. How can you afford not to look into insurance if you know you
will be hospitalized?

If you ARE talking to me and asking me if I am using something for

Coumadin for 10 years only because I was afraid to go off of it... because I

I had a DVT (deep vein clot/thrombosis) in 1995 that was encouraged by
surgeries. I was also very, very, very lucky to have survived it because I
was telling doctors (my neurosurgeon and his staff hours away) my symptoms
and they were ignoring them even though they were classic symptoms of a DVT!
Hitherto ... I was not familiar with clots of any type so I was in the dark.

I went around for about a month with my left lower leg very swollen and very
hard. I finally read an article on the net (I was very new to the Internet
back then and only knew how to look things up) and one doctor in Washington
state had an article about spinal cord injuries and folks with MS. A
sentence said If one leg is significantly larger than the other... it could
indicate a clot. All I knew was that a clot was not good but I had no
idea that I had a DVT whereby all I had to do was move a certain way to have
it move directly to my lungs to kill me.

Yep... technology is an incredible, useful, and evolving tool with a path
that's had to predict. Not long ago, nobody would have thought Ray Kurzweil
could teleport himself from his office (in MA, I believe) to a stage in Tucson
to give a lecture and answer questions while looking at you face-to-face! But
he did it.

Kurzweil is an amazing futurist focusing on technology that seems straight out

If you are on a waiver program in the state of Ohio and you have one of those
long term care insurance policies all the money it pays you must be paid to
them until you pay them back for all they have paid. You will loose your waiver
standing and be forced to reapply. At present there is a 28 month waiting
period.
You can't have life insurance and qualify for waiver.
i can see getting around it by letting a trusted family member purchase
insurance on you.
good luck in whatever you decide,

I have received all of my care at the VA here in Tampa and while I did have
a similar incident (Lori's DVT problem) I received unbelievable care.

Don't get me wrong, when I first went to the VA in 95, it was not nearly as
good as it is now. Sure, there are still problems, but I think there are
problems in every hospital.

As for hospital insurance through physicians mutual, I only pay around $230
a year which equates to less than $20 a month. It pays me $75 a day if I
become hospitalized. I have had the insurance since 1996 though, so it
might cost more now. I haven't checked in a while.

I had a DVT in 98 and had a similar situation, but albeit not nearly as bad
as yours. I was bedbound for about when one day my left leg began to swell
above the knee and felt warm to the touch. I called in and talked to my
nurse practitioner, who then told me it was nothing serious and to simply
keep it elevated income and the next day. I was clueless as to the symptoms
of deep vein thrombosis at the time.

Thank goodness my roommate was a resident doctor at a local hospital.
Around midnight when he arrived at my house we questioned him and he let me
know in no uncertain terms that I needed to get into the hospital ASAP.

Right now I'm taking an adult aspirin 81 mg every other day.
