[QUAD-L] People claiming their pet is a service animal...

2008-07-30 Thread ChippyHeart
Have any of you had any problems with other people claiming their pet is a
service animal when it is not? Apparently people are not allowed to ask for
proof anymore so just anyone can claim that their animal is certified. While
I was on the boardwalk a dog lunged at my service dog and the gentleman
patrolling asked me to go to the security office and get a tag identifying my
dog
as a service animal. The people in the security office said that they knew
who the dog was that lunged at my dog but the owners claimed the dog was
certified and they could not prove otherwise because they are not allowed to
ask.
I know that this animal was not a service animal and I know that if it
would've gotten hold of my dog it would have been fatal. The dog was a pit
bull
and immediately crouched into an attack posture as soon as we walked by. My
service animal is lab and pit bull and I have no problem whatsoever with pit
bulls.

I know that it's hard for some people to produce a certificate proving that
their animal is a service animal but the people in the office said that it is
getting ridiculous and asked if there was anything that could be done? You
guys have always been a big help so I thought I would bring the question to
your attention and get your thoughts.

Security is correct-no certification needed and all they can ask is What
does your animal do for you?

RE: [QUAD-L] People claiming their pet is a service animal...

2008-07-30 Thread Tod E. Santee
Hi Tammie Lou,

Liz is correct about not requiring a service dog (animal) ID, vest or
certification _BUT_ if *any* animal shows agressive behavior or has a history
of such they can ask the owner to leave until the problem is correxcted.

No public place is required to allow agressive or dangerous people, like being
able to toss you out of a bar for trying to pick fights (not from personal
experience, mind you...lol). The same applies to pets in Petco, etc. and
service animals anywhere. So while a Certificate is never needed, it would be
wise for boardwalk security (or any place of business) to keep a log of
complaints of agression and even give written warning so they can avoid an ADA
Title III discrimination charge.

Best regards,
Tod

Are there any on the List who have the Baclofen Pump?
I have been corresponding with a lady who’s son-in-law was just in an accident
and paralyzed C/4/5.
He has very bad spasms and pain and they want to get a Baclofen Pump and would
like to talk to a few people who have been through it.
If you could answer a few questions for her could you let me know?
Thank you very much,
Greg

Both of my dogs require to have a medallion. It has been too long ago that
I've read the ADA, but I thought the animal was required to be easily
identified as a service animal.

When in doubt, check with the experts like Paws for a Cause and some of the
certified training school for the legalize. Ask them about the product
liability requirement should you have an aggressive guide animal.

Have them email you the answers and have them laminated for safe keeping.

[QUAD-L] Baclofen Pump?

2008-07-30 Thread wheelchair
For those who have them or were selected to be candidates for the internal
pump, most are pleased for several reasons.

Less amount of actual drug used.
The drug is presented to the actual site rather than having to be processed
first.
Its automatic, no forgetting.
Those who previously have violent spasms, noticed the difference within the
first 24 hours.

Keep in mind, this is always a private matter between the candidate and
their doctors.

Re: [QUAD-L] Health Update

2008-07-30 Thread LadyNotes
Dana,

I am doing pretty good. My therapy is going very well. I am getting a lot
of stretching exercises per doctor's orders. I wasn't getting any stretching
at home, and my muscles were very tight. I have also been working on, sit
to stand exercises. They are also going very well.

One of my goals was to be able to feed myself. I have been working on that
and have been able to eat most meals without assistance, yeah! I had to have
the maintenance guy sharpen a fork for me, so it will be easier to stab my
food in order to pick it up. I have to be extra careful, so I don't stab
myself in the tongue while eating, LOL!

Thanks for thinking about me. Keep me in your prayers.

Naomi
