[QUAD-L] FACEBOOK FRIENDS

2009-06-23 Thread Lori Michaelson
To the very many of you who became a friend to my Facebook account--I just
deactivated it because I do not have time in my life right now to even
access the computer regularly let alone there.

Hopefully, when I get back into the swing of things I will create another
account and look forward to it!

Just wanted to let you know!

Re: [QUAD-L] People

2009-06-23 Thread John S.
I try to never get snappy with anyone that handles my food.
I find most restaurants to be very accommodating. One place has several tables
they can raise for people with tall chairs. The guy even shut the blower off in
our section when he saw I was sweating.
This is becoming more common. My niece calls it annoying dysreflexia. She has
never seen it get bad. My body seems to save the really bad episodes  getting
back in bed or late at night all alone.
Has anyone here got a drug that stops this from happening without leaving you
trashed? I have pain related AD 99% of the time. The longer im in my chair, the
worse this is getting. This use to occur only once a month or few weeks.
So far the only treatment I find least debilitating is POT. I use to eat it but
my source dried up. Thats right, I had an ex gf that worked for Keebler. I bet
you all have a mental picture of me and an elf. She made cookies that should be
illegal even if they didn't have pot in them.
I guess this is a chronic form of AD. It is getting very difficult to predict
or react to without overdosing on something. I'd love to hear what others do
when an episode starts. I know you can't all be running to the ER everytime
this begins.
The very worst part is the anxiety and the inability to THINK straight.
I know sweating is just preliminary and mostly an annoyance but I'm hoping
something has come up seeing as some of the guys have kids and ,,,hair. I use
to keep up with all the latest but since being on Med/Med it seems like
medicine has stood still.

BW,
john

PS yes I have checked bowel and bladder. It is from pain, but the possible
sources range widely and why would it only hurt enough to cause profuse
sweating 3 to 5 days a week?

Be careful how you come across the first time you meet strangers.  We all make
snap judgements within seconds of meeting someone new.  I snapped at a new
waitress once who turned out being about the best waitress I've ever met,
because I felt she was ignoring me.  I started the fight !!!  I'm more careful
now.

Re: [QUAD-L] Questions

2009-06-23 Thread Dan
When I need medical question(s) answered, I go to the experts - and
that would be the Quad List. You guys are awesome. As you might
remember, I have a Supra Pubic cath and use a hospital bed. Like the
idiot that I am, I would lay the night time drainage bag at my feet.
And here's the stupid part. I have contracture's so I sleep with two
pillows under my knees and the foot of the bed cranked all the way
up. Talk about trying to pee uphill!

So after reading all your great advice, I now hang the bag on the
side of the bed even with my Supra Pubic. The excess tubing is coiled
and pinned next to my hip. I place a plastic bin on the floor under the bag.

What a difference! I sleep much better and I don't wake up every
morning with a bulging bladder. I know, I know, I'm an idiot. But
with all the urologists I've seen you'd think one of them would tell
the newbe about such things - at least hand out a pamphlet or
something. Thanks again.

My aide lays mine on the floor as it would not drain hanging on the

idea, laying it in a basin to prevent problems of leaking if someone
forgot to not latch it securely. I sleep in a old-fashioned
waterbed, which prevents any pressure and I find comfortable.

Re: [QUAD-L] Questions

2009-06-23 Thread Dave0c
I've found most 'normal' medical people are pretty clueless as to how to
handle quads. My very good friend is a retired ER RN nurse and she helped
push me down a rounded curb in my manual chair by pushing on by backside
with her knee when the footrests got stuck on the street. I love her
dearly but I don't let her get behind me anymore. We had a heated chat about
the
movie of Hillary Swank getting quadized from a boxing accident and then
euthenized as a solution to her predicament. I brought her to tears as she
thought it was an understandable ending and I didn't. I softened after I
actually saw the movie. I was partly getting back at her for the knee in the
back push she gave me.

Sorry, I came in on the tail end of the conversation. Did you have a
Foley catheter before your supra pubic catheter ? I have a Foley catheter and
I'm thinking about getting a supra pubic. A really good friend of mine,
who's a nurse, told me that my urethra will erode from sitting on it all the
time. She suggested I get a supra pubic. I don't know if this is true or
not. Anyone have any suggestions

Re: [QUAD-L] Questions

2009-06-23 Thread Dan
I used to be able to void on my own. Then a few years ago all of a
sudden I couldn't. So Urologist suggested self intermittent cathing.
I can bearly move one arm and I don't have 24 hour care. So, then he
suggested a Foley which I had for about a year but it gave me
excruciating pain in my right hip which is the side I lean on. My Uro
said he wasn't surprised as a Foley is in contact with a lot of
nerves which could be the cause of the pain. That's when he suggested
the Supra Pubic. I got a second opinion from a Uro at Mass General
and he concurred.
