Re: [QUAD-L] Flat free tires, Front/Mid/Rear wheel drive

2010-10-15 Thread wheelchair
Most tires and wheels for mobility devices are made in China. Most electric
wheelchairs and scooters are made in China, by Chinese using parts and
components made in China, also by Chinese. Primo, is one of the biggies in
China, but there are several. I don't see Goodyear, Goodrich or Gooday
getting involved with adaptive mobility tires in the near or far future. What
a
shame, eh?

I have used flat free tires on two different Invacare Storm, Rear Wheel
Drive Wheelchairs for over 15 years. During evaluation for both chairs I
could not tell any noticeable ride difference between the flat free tires
and the tires with air. Something like that usually happens when you're
in a hurry to get someplace or already late for something.

If I have flat tires that makes one more thing I have to depend on someone
else to do and don't we all want to be more independant.

During my last Wheelchair evaluation I thought the mid Wheel drive
Wheelchairs had a much rougher ride than the Rear or Front Wheel drive
Wheelchairs. Plus I heard from many mid wheel drive wheelchair users that
if you wanted to go on the grass, dirt or gravel you didn't want a mid
Wheel drive Wheelchair. If you have a lockdown for driving it makes them
even worse they said. I was told Invacare was even switching some mid
Wheel drive to Rear Wheel drive for several people because of problems
with ground Clearance they had after getting home with the mid Wheel drive
Wheelchairs.

I can see in some cases where mid/front Wheel drive would be better but in
my house and van the Rear wheel drive works better and the others don't
work very good. I know because I have tried both.

Just my 2¢

follow and will be a good guideline for the contractorthat will be building it

much depends on your climate, environment and capital.  Room is also an
important issue. Each material has its plus and minuses.  Finding someone to
purchase the raw materials, perform the install and do the job right is all

A ramp can be expensive. All ramps are expensive, so planning is most
important. Is your family or friends doing the work for you or will the job be

[QUAD-L] Social Security Fast-Track Disability Processes Get Even Faster

2010-10-15 Thread Don Price
With apologies to those on the list who are outside of U.S. -Don.

News Release

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

For Immediate Release

press.off...@ssa.gov
Social Security Fast-Track Disability Processes Get Even Faster
New Rules Will Further Speed Benefits to Tens of Thousands of Americans with Disabilities
(Printer friendly version)
Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, today announced that the agency has published final rules that will further reduce the time it takes to decide applications for disability benefits from those persons with the most severe disabilities—a process that currently takes less than two weeks on average. The new rules allow disability examiners to make fully favorable determinations for adult cases under the agency’s Quick Disability Determination (QDD) and Compassionate Allowance (CAL) processes without medical or psychological consultant approval. It also will help the agency process cases more efficiently as it will give medical and psychological consultants more time to work on complex cases where their expertise is most needed.
“The new rules we are publishing today will help us get disability benefits to the most severely disabled Americans even faster,” Commissioner Astrue said. “This year, more than 100,000 people benefited from our fast-track disability processes and received decisions in a matter of days rather than the months and years it can sometimes take. I am pleased that our fast-track processes will now be even faster and help speed much needed benefits to our most vulnerable citizens.”
Under Social Security’s QDD process, a predictive computer model analyzes specific data within the electronic disability file to identify cases where there is a high likelihood that the claimant is disabled and we can quickly obtain medical evidence. The CAL process currently identifies 88 specific diseases and conditions that clearly qualify for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability benefits and can be fast-tracked.
The final rules, 20 CFR Parts 404 and 416, can be accessed through the Federal Register online at www.regulations.gov. They will be effective on November 12, 2010.
Additional information about Social Security’s Compassionate Allowances process is available at www.socialsecurity.gov/compassionateallowances.

Re: [QUAD-L] Ramps

2010-10-15 Thread Lori Michaelson
My husband really likes to watch Holmes on Homes on HGTV with Mike
Holmes. I watched an episode of it with him today whereby a guy with MS had
moved into a home 6 years prior and then was diagnosed with MS a few years
later and his health *rapidly* deteriorated. He is now confined to a
scooter.

Anyway, the guy with MS and his wife had known another guy in some capacity
and they asked him if he would build a ramp for them... on to their home of
course. Needless to say, the guy did a crappy job and then kept coming up
with excuses as to finishing it correctly, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

So, in comes Mike Holmes with his crew. Mike showed everything about it
that was so poorly done (and therefore unsafe). So him and his crew took
off the other ramp and built one (a perfect one) that was up to code, etc.

For those living in extreme temperatures (from cold winter months to very
hot months) it is important to use PRESSURE TREATED WOOD.

Mike also did not use nails. He used GALVANIZED SCREWS (if not galvanized,
they will rust quickly from rain or snow, etc.). And he used approximately
3000 of those screws for the ramp he built onto this guys house for him.
Not to mention going for foot down in the earth for stability. And making
sure everything is leveled, etc. etc. etc.

HGTV does a lot of reruns on many programs so you might want to check out
your local listings when is on for you in your area and then look at THE
TOPIC that Mike Holmes is working on in any particular episode.

as to finishing it correctly, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

So, in comes Mike Holmes with his crew. Mike showed everything about it that
was so poorly done (and therefore unsafe). So him and his crew took off the
other ramp and built one (a perfect one) that was up to code, etc.

For those living in extreme temperatures (from cold winter months to very hot
months) it is important to use PRESSURE TREATED WOOD.

Mike also did not use nails. He used GALVANIZED SCREWS (if not galvanized,
they will rust quickly from rain or snow, etc.). And he used approximately
3000 of those screws for the ramp he built onto this guys house for him. Not
to mention going for foot down in the earth for stability. And making sure
everything is leveled, etc. etc. etc.

HGTV does a lot of reruns on many programs so you might want to check out your
local listings when is on for you in your area and then look at THE TOPIC that
Mike Holmes is working on in any particular episode.

A ramp can be expensive. All ramps are expensive, so planning is most
important. Is your family or friends doing the work for you or will the job be
contracted? Until that is determined, it is difficult to offer you better and
more credible advice. Will it be a straight run or have curves and bends?
Single level or dual level?

Please review the ANSI Codes regarding ramps as it is what most jurisdictions
follow and will be a good guideline for the contractorthat will be building it
for you. No material is impervious to the elements. Talk with your local Center
for Independent Living for ideas, contractors, etc.

much depends on your climate, environment and capital. Room is also an
important issue. Each material has its plus and minuses. Finding someone to
purchase the raw materials, perform the install and do the job right is all
part of Doing it Right. How long will your ramp have to be or required

Hi everyone,

I need to install a new ramp, it can be temporary or permanent. I'm

trying to decide between Cement, Wood or deck type material or Expanded
metal.

I was thinking snow and rain would fall through the expanded metal so it
wouldn't require as much snow shoveling as the others. But would it have

good traction when covered with frost, fresh snow or wet from rain?

I have a cement ramp and it doesn't seem to have any issues unless the
snow builds up and gets packed down before it gets shoveled off. I would

think a wood or decking material would be similar to the cement.

Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Todd
