VGA Monitors and PPC Upgrades
Hi All. This question is two-fold. 1) I'm looking into buying a used Quadra 950 from an auction my company holds each year to get rid of old computers. I need to know if I can connect a PC VGA monitor to it. If I need a special adapter, can anyone tell me the name so I can look for it on eBay? 2) Can someone tell me about PowerPC upgrades for Quadra's and the 950 model in particular? Which are the more reputable manufacturers? What pitfalls should I expect? And if you can point me to websites which talk about PPC upgrades for older Macs, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dennis. -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I need to know if I can connect a PC VGA monitor to it. If I need a special adapter, can anyone tell me the name so I can look for it on eBay? A PC multiscan monitor and a PC (HD-15)-to-Mac (DB-15) dongle will do the job. A non-multiscan, say one which is 640 x 480 VGA only, will not work. 2) Can someone tell me about PowerPC upgrades for Quadra's and the 950 model in particular? Which are the more reputable manufacturers? What pitfalls should I expect? And if you can point me to websites which talk about PPC upgrades for older Macs, it would be greatly appreciated. 1) Apple's PPC Upgrade card, 66 HHz, easily and reliably extensible to 80 MHz, 2) Daystar's redesign of Apple's PPC Upgrade card, 100 MHz, and can't ho higher without burning itself out, and 3) Sonnet's redesign of Daystar's redesign of Apple's PPC Upgrade card, also 100 MHz, and also can't go higher without burning itself out. The Apple card for the Q950 also works in the Q650 and Q700 (and, with a right-angle adapter, in the Q610). The Daystar and Sonnet cards are oriented differently than the Apple card, but will work in at least the Q950 and Q650 and probably the Q700, too. -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Q630 for a NetBSD fileserver?
Hi all, I've been using a Q630/8.1/36 mb RAM/20 gig HD as a headless file server for photos music. As the network transfer speeds are slow (way less than 10 Mbps), I've been wondering if NetBSD would be any quicker. Any experiences out there? Where should I look for NetBSD for 68k help? PlainTalk Microphones...
Is there any online reference material on the PlainTalk Microphone system? That is, tech notes and specs, operational theory, etc.? I know the PlainTalk mikes contain a pre-amp, and their output is basically line-level, but it would be nice to know the real specs... The plug also seems to be somewhat proprietary. Is the longer-shank type plug available from any regular suppliers? Thanks, Bob -- Written on a vintage Macintosh computer... _ /_) /__)ob -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Thanks, Bob - I seem to recall an article in a MacAddict talking about using the innards of a PlainTalk to adapt a PC mic to a Mac. It had a description (don't recall if it had a schematic) of the workings of the thing. Ken Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Spigot Power AV Problem
Mark Benson [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I'm bad but I'm not that stupid... Unlike some correspondents to the mailing list, this writer means no malice. Neither did I, I was just 'avin' a larrff as the say in London. But you're smart and tenacious, Mark. Congratulations on getting your SPAV to working. :-) Thx. It's still not running to plan but it's mostly software niggles and, I think, the old RAID problem you mentioned. Does it truly write to your RAID? No, and I don't think it ever will but hey, it was a nice idea :). -- -- Mark Benson Any spelling errors are attributed to PEBKAC Vintage Macs List Nanny SilValleyPirate - AIM silicon_valley_pirate_uk - Yahoo! Installing a 2nd HDD
Have an Apple/IBM ST325509 (need to find mounting brackets) that I would like to install as a 2nd HDD (Q650). This is all new territory and I don't want to muck anything up. The Apple KBase article which references this procedure is of no help because the jpeg doesn't load (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=36122) ~ IBM's site is a bit more helpful, at least the picture shows up (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/dpes/dpesjum.htm). Currently there are three (assuming) 'jumpers' across (the little posts) JP7, JP6 and JP5. Is it as easy as removing the jumper from JP6 (because this will be the second device [the third is an external zip]) and placing it on JP2 (to set the ID to 1)? Is there somewhere that would help me understand the intended purpose(s) of JP4, JP5, JP6 and JP7? What kind of questions should I be asking about dual-booting? Thanks in advance :) greatful ___ GO.com Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
